  • Not happenin'

    The karaoke, that is.

I've been practicing in the privacy of my own home (and car).  I've been singing Stevie (lots of songs), Bonnie Raitt's "Thing Called Love", The Pretenders' "Back on the Chain Gang", and yes, Heart's "Alone."  (the nerve!).  I also tried "These Boots Were Made For Walkin'" by Nancy Sinatra.  "I can fudge my way through that . . . " I reasoned.  No, I can't.  As long as the actual song is playing with the original voice being heard, I can get thru it.  But on my own with no other voices to protect me, it just can't happen.  I can't do this to the general public.  I'd never hear the end of it and they'd never recover.

Funny thing is - my Dad can sing.  My mother can NOT.  Sure wish I'd gotten his genes.

Oh, well.  At least I can clog!!

  • Karaoke

Wow . . .  two days in a row.  Whoda thunk it?

Anyhoo, one of the cloggers talked me into going out with her and her boyfriend to the Dog House in Palm Bay for karaoke last Thursday.  I picked up another clogger and we met them there.  I told her ahead of time - "I am not gonna sing - no way, no how!"  She grinned and said that was fine . . .  'just come with us and you'll have a great time'.  So I did, and I did!  (I won't tell you about the morning after though.  NOT fun.

But back to the evening itself.  I've heard some karaoke before and it was baaaaaad.  But lots of these folks were actually  . . .  good.  After a drink, I tell my buddy, "You know, the only tunes I'd even consider singing are Stevie Nicks songs."  So she gets all wild-eyed and puts in a request for the two of us to sing "Landslide".  She got up on the little stage and I sat there at my seat with my mic, and we get through it.  Turns out, my mic wasn't on!  Not that I'm complaining.  Anyway, the night goes on, we get drunk, and so on and so forth.

But I get to thinking, I would like to do a Stevie song in the future.  This was a great group at the Dog House - friendly sorts, enthusiastic (even to those peeps that were less than stellar).  Why not? I ask myself.  Well, I'm not that great a singer.  I used to sing all the time -  in the car, in the shower, whenever, wherever.  I'd sing Stevie, Fleetwood Mac, Abba, Heart, Olivia Newton-John . . . I kept in tune, for the most part.  But that was years ago.  Hubby says I canNOT sing well at all.  I guess that's true.  "But, I love to sing" I tell him.  "And that's not helping" he shoots back.

So I'm laying in bed one night and all these song possiblities are running through my mind.  It would be stupid to attempt any Heart songs.  Ann Wilson's voice is way too strong and powerful and I'd make a fool out of myself.  I still consider a Stevie song, perhaps "Gold Dust Woman". Yeah, that would be good.  But I don't remember seeing that on the playlist.  "Edge of Seventeen"?  Uh, there's that scream in the middle of it and they may call an ambulance thinking I'm suddenly in severe pain.  Then, I wonder about other voices I could try to do, like Chrissie Hynde from the Pretenders.  "Brass in Pocket"?  It's a deeper sound and I could fudge that pretty well.  Hmmmmm.  I wonder . . .

    I'll give it more thought.

  • Wow.  I guess it's been a while hasn't it?  I'm been lax in the blogging dept, but not in the clogging dept!

The state convention was awesome.  Learned quite a few routines, one of which I added to our repertoire - "Nothing Better to Do".  It was taught by Jamie Conn of Clogging Connection.  I do enjoy his teaching . . .  very animated and inspirational.   We're now looking forward to the Jamboree in Tallahassee , hosted by Jeff Wood and the Mountain Dews.  Now that's another talented bunch!

As far as our group, we are moving right along.  Started teaching my newest piece "Better Life" by Keith Urban last week.  It's peppy and it will be a cool show piece.

  • State Clogging Convention is tomorrow

Three of us are attending - myself, Carol, and Kathy.  Another clogger, Anne, was planning to go but something came up with her and she'll be unable to make it  .  Carol and Kathy will come to my house and I will drive from here.   It's an hour-long drive from Melbourne to Orlando, and we will leave town about 7am.  Doors open at 8:00.  A few of the same instructors from the Indian River PowWow will be there.  We're looking forward to it . . .  it will be interesting to compare it to the PowWow.  From what I've heard, there will be 3 separate halls going on, so we can pick and choose which to sit in on and when.

The bad news - I feel like I'm coming down with something.  I've got a scratchy throat and that funky-head feeling.  I'm hoping it's a one-day thing, 'cos I really don't want to be sick for tomorrow!!

  • Thoughts on the Indian River Pow Wow

This being the first workshop for the few of us who attended, it was quite an experience!  There were groups from all of over the state of FL.  There were lots of very talented people there, various skill levels (most of which were awesome!)  We felt like fish out of water; many of the 'requested' routines (songs that people just got up and did dance to) were those that seem to be quite well-known in the clogging community and are repeated in workshops.  In that regard, we did a lot of sitting, but once they played "Old Time Rock and Roll", we got up and showed our stuff!

Every hour, a new routine was taught.  Most were in the 'intermediate' category, with one in the late afternoon on Saturday being 'advanced'.  It didn't take long for 3 of us to take one look at that one and go back to our seats to watch!  But Tracy stuck it out a bit longer and started to catch on to some of the more complicated combinations.

The instructors were: Anne Lanier, Marge Callahan, Greg Dionne, Jeff Parrott, Jamie Conn, and Diana Allen.  My personal favorite was Anne Lanier.  She's energetic, talented, and loves to have a good time.  Marge Callahan has a wonderful sense of humor.  She cued her pieces, while her assistant demonstrated the steps.  Jeff Parrott is quite the animated character.  His routines were loads of fun.  Of course, all of the others were great, too.

Saturday night, we were 9th out of 10 exhibition acts.  We held our own very nicely, considering this was our first performance in a room full of  'fellow cloggers'.  It was a blast.

We also met some people we know from our list of  MySpace friends,  including Cricket and his family, the Kountry Folk Kloggers, and Jeff Wood from the Mountain Dews.

We are looking forward to the annual FL Clogging Convention in Orlando later this month.  We won't exhibition this time, but we are excited to see how this compares to the Pow Wow.

    Until next time . . .  !
