The halls of Upenn are storied and rich with tradition. I want to become part of the vibrant institution that has been home to others such as Noam Chomsky and Donald Trump, and where Eugenio Calabi, co-creator of the Calabi-Yau manifolds, teaches. Right on campus is Franklin Field, where the famous Penn Relays are held. I visited the stadium this summer, and I could almost hear the pounding of the runners’ feet on the track. How many other schools can claim to have been founded by Benjamin Franklin, or have been the birthplace for ENIAC? Penn has a long-standing hallmark of excellence that assures me that I will be offered many opportunities to excel during my stay.

Penn preserved its magical atmosphere by managing to retain the feel of an enclosed, suburban campus community, while being right next to Philadelphia. I live in New York City, and have always disliked the way Columbia University seems to be nothing more than a loose collection of buildings in the middle of Manhattan. Not at Penn. There, I feel safe and at home, and I feel part of the campus community, not the city of Philadelphia.

I want to be a part of the rich undergraduate program that Penn has. I am applying to the Jerome Fisher program, which would allow me to pursue my academic passion, engineering, while giving me the career options that I desire. I want to be in the position to be able to use my knowledge of engineering to make influential decisions, and a business degree from Wharton would help me do exactly that. Furthermore, I would be able to participate in undergraduate research, and also seek out educational opportunities in the adjacent city of Philadelphia. I hope to be a part of the exciting new research taking place at Penn, and participate in relevant, cutting-edge work.

The University of Pennsylvania promises to be an exciting personal adventure, something based on more than just academics. I hope to be a part of the class of 2009 as they carry the Penn standard into the future.
