| | Absolutely GeniusUpon research of famous horror authors, I came upon one named Ambrose Bierce. At first, this name meant nothing to me. Then upon further reading, I stumbled across the fact that this poem,
"The bullet that pierced Goebel's breast Can not be found in all the West; Good reason, it is speeding here To stretch McKinley on his bier."
is the poem that this year's U.S. History book said urged the assassination of President McKinley. However, this is quite the contrary. The poem was actually written about the assassination of Governer William Goebel with a meaning to convey shock and dismay rather than urgency for anarchistic uprisings. Once again, this leads me to believe that we must be selective about what we believe in the history books. And when you write poetry, keep in mind that about 5% will misinterpret it, 4% will come close to the original meaning, and 90% will have a better chance at bobbing for apples in a bucket of frozen water rather than get what the hell you were even talking about in the first place. |
