Je te presente:

My new blog! Which I happen to like very much. I can play with the formatting, if not all I’d like to, as much as I have time for. The old blog is at http://www.xanga.com/ArinElspeth and the new one is at http://aglassdarkly.wordpress.com . For those of you subscribed to my Xanga - mmm, well I have the new blog linked into my Facebook Notes. I’m still keeping the Xanga account open so I can keep up with all of you.

So, one more week of classes, and, lucky me - only one week of finals! I’m definitely not sticking around here until the 20th, due to a terribly short Christmas break.

I promise that I’ll post more … when I have the time … but for now this will have to do. Cheers!

Not-so-random quote of the day:

“But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. “ - 1 Corinthians 13:10-12

Talking Turkey

I've been thinking about changing my blog to WordPress - I'd like a lot more features than Xanga is giving me. Cheapskate that I am, I want to play without having to pay. I blame my Dad - he's the one that got me started on web design.

I suppose I'm officially on Thanksgiving break, even if I haven't left Houston. I do have reading and a composition to write ... and two problems sets ... but I think procrastination will triumph. In that spirit, I offer a poem a friend sent me in middle school:

The turkey shot out of the oven and rocketed into the air,
It knocked every plate off the table and partly demolished a chair.
It ricocheted into a corner and burst with a deafening boom,
Then splattered all over the kitchen, completely obscuring the room.
It stuck to the walls and the windows, it totally coated the floor,
There was turkey attached to the ceiling, where there'd never been turkey before.
It blanketed every appliance, it smeared every saucer and bowl,
There wasn't a way I could stop it, that turkey was out of control.
I scraped and I scrubbed with displeasure, and thought with chagrin as I mopped,
That I'd never again stuff a turkey with popcorn that hadn't been popped.

Happy Thanksgiving!

In Brief

Well... I was going to update my Xanga. Really.

And then I realized that I had to print out my French composition, and of course the printers never work the first time you send anything to them. I should go to class now ...

But, very quickly, so that those of you who say I never post are proven wrong, here's what's on my plate (or at least some of it):

  • a fluids graded exercise, which is essentially a project
  • two labs to write up - they usually take a day each
  • Into the Woods - yeah, a rehearsal and three shows
  • french - I'm sure there's a test or quiz or something
  • lots of other things that I'm probably forgetting, which is bad.

AND I'm going home for Thanksgiving, so if you want to hang out for an hour or two over the weekend, give me a call, and I'll probably gripe and say I have work to do, but I'll probably end up giving in.

Okay, now I'm officially late for class. Cheers.

Shades of Grey

you say the world is shades of grey
you say the shadows shift and sway

I say the world is black and white
light at odd angles to the night
stark edges
dark pledges
no communion
no confusion
no compromise.

stop spinning so fast
the acute contrast blurs

your need for complexity
distorts true simplicity

fear-impelled motion
creates spectres in the night

make an end - a new beginning
stop your stationary spinning
move forward and

come to the light.

All These Things

Amazing song! The way the subject is managed in the framework of a love song is extremely amusing ...

Speaking of amusing things, here's an excerpt from my French workbook:

Une recette pour une belle dispute:
2 enfants energiques
beaucoup de bonbons
un nouveau jouet
Donnez beaucoup de bonbons aux enfants. Ne les laissez pas faire de sieste. Mettez-les dans une petite piece. Ajoutez le jouet neuf. Ne les surveillez pas. Laissez mijoter pendant 10 minutes. Quand la dispute commence, separez les enfants.

Translation:
2 energetic children
a lot of candy
a new toy
Give a lot of candy to the kids. Don't let them take a nap. Put them in a small room. Add the new toy. Don't supervise. Let simmer for 10 minutes. When the fight starts, separate the children.

Sounds like a fool-proof recipe to me.

I suppose, as long as I'm posting, I should note that I've had a pretty awesome week, as opposed to the rotten one I was expecting to have. My exams turned out to be more or less easy, and the problem set I was expecting to have was cancelled. Tuttle was right ...

I saw "The Illusionist" last night with Kim and Erika, and I thoroughly recommend it. That is, if you're a fan of historical mysteries. The plot is very simple but well-executed, with an interesting twist at the end.

Okay, that's all for now, folks - I'm going to study for my French exam now.
