  • Dear Lily,

I am a teenage girl in high school. I feel jealous of my classmates sometimes because I come from a lower-class family and many of them are very rich. Most of my friends wear North Face jackets and Ugg boots and carry expensive purses and I know I can't afford them. Still it makes me feel sad. I wish I had the things that they had. Does that make me shallow? Please tell me what to do.

    - Am I Shallow?

    Dear Am I Shallow?,

If you feel inferior to your friends because they wear more expensive clothes than you do, then I'll have to say, yes, you are a shallow and spineless person. You may feel like having expensive stuff is the most important thing right now, but guess what? It's not. In a few years your Coach-bag-carrying friends are going to be waitressing in some Vegas hotel, and you're going to be making the big bucks in some corporate office and laughing at them.

But if you still crave those brands, by all means, get them. Get a job and earn them. Just don't ask your parents for money to fulfill your own petty little vanity.

    - Lily
