  • Decisions and Choices

I just read an article on Angelina Jolie (here) and something she said struck me as very insightful ...

Jolie [...] continues to draw strong reactions from the public, which she sees as a good thing.

"That some people support me and some people really don't like me tells me that I'm making decisions and I'm standing strong for something I believe in. I'm making choices in life. And that's the right thing to do."

Are we making decisions?  What do we believe in?  Are we standing strong for it?  Are we making choices for our lives?

  • Dreaming about Family

It's almost Chinese New Year, a time when families all get together to celebrate.

I had a dream last night.  I was hanging out with my relatives (my aunts' families) and my mom was also there.  I was quite bored, as it's always a "chore" to be with them.

Then the earth quaked (we were somewhere in Vancouver).  That's my worst fear, as I don't want to face this disaster alone (I have no family in Vancouver).  I felt so lonely and helpless.

I told my mom to hide under the table with me.  I then suddenly realized that I was with my dear mom and I was not alone anymore.  My mom leaned over and kissed my cheek ... somehow to let me know how she appreciates me and that I'll be ok.

My heart felt so warm and happy; my eyes started to tear up.

  • Crazy New Year's Eve ... Happy 2008!

A couple of friends and us went to the 2007 NYE countdown at the Roundhouse Center near Yaletown.  It was a crazy night that included many of my firsts.

I think it was the first time that I drank that much.  With so much alcohol in me, the shirtless circuit boys looked hotter and I felt like hugging my friends all the time.  I was also dancing shirtless for the first time.

Another first is to be "molested" by a stranger.  There was this young guy that we barely know and was high on something.  He was following us around and was touching me all over while asking " ... is it okay if I touch you?"  It was weired ... but I appreciate the attention nonetheless.

    Happy 2008 everyone!
  • 李宗盛的音樂 - Taiwan Musical/Vocal Art

Since my visit to Taipei, I have been noticing that Taiwanese pop singers and musicians are really good at vocal art.  They know the art of expressing emotions using the Chinese language and also its relationship with music.

On Taiwanese real-life/variety shows like 模范棒棒堂/我愛黑澀會 and 超級星光大道, real superstar musicians offer advices to contestants and most of their advices surrounds how to affect the audience's emotions through words and non-words.  A singer has to feel and understand the words that he is singing, while understanding the significance of the breaks/pauses between words.

Tonight, I watched 李宗盛's (Jonathan Lee, the "godfather" of Taiwanese music industry) concert DVD and I was moved to tears.  His performance on stage showed his conviction to the music.  He wrote almost 90% of the music and lyrics in the show, and you can really see that he understood the significance of each note and word in the song.  He truely understands the relationship between music and words.  In addition to his expressive singing, the words he sang are his own and he make it even more powerful with the intentional or unintentional breaks and sighs.

Because of its effectiveness and emotional qualities, 李宗盛's work is very popular commercially as well.  Most of his work are packaged as karaoke songs and given to famous singers to perform.  However, sometimes their reditions lost the original creator's intended emotions.  In contrast, in his own concert, he performed most of his songs with just a basic guitar, allowing his emotions to surface again.  We can now enjoy these familiar karaoke songs "again", tasting the full emotions presented by their creator.

  • The New Trek Cast

This is the cast of the new Trek movie!  It's directed by Lost's director J J Abram.

I'm excited to see they cast so many pretty faces for the crew!  Eric Bana, John Cho, Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine ...

  • come as you are ... be who U are ...

I don't know if it's the fact that I can't go see this concert, or its claim that it's a concert with an unique idea ("每首歌都會設定些影像配合,就好似電影咁,有內容、有情感"); my desire to watch this show is increasing everyday!

  • Memories of Taipei and Hong Kong

    TPE HKGTPE HKG

My memories of Taipei include the food, the Japanese influence, the courteous people and the open accepting attitude.

With the high Canadian dollar, the food there was already inexpensive.  But snacking is just a main part of Taiwanese culture (or any chinese culture really).  From breakfast pancakes (see picture above) to lunch dumplings to dinner noodles, everything was so tasty!  The Japanese influence in Taiwan culture can be seen in their food (Taiwanese X Japnese fusion), buldings, hairstyles, courteousness and speech.  It's the result of the best of both cultures!  The gay scene there was quite big as well, comparing to Hong Kong and Vancouver.  There's an area called "紅樓" close to our hotel and shopping district, "西門町".  There were about 10 gay coffee shops and lounges in a row.  At night, the area in front of the shops became one big patio where people hanged out and mingled.  People seemed to konw each other and smiled at one another.  Such a friendly place!  We also went to 3 bars (Agaha, Jump and Funky), which were big and packed with good looking people.

(The hugh building in the picture above is 中正紀念堂)

    TPE HKGTPE HKG

We spend about 2 weeks in Hong Kong this time.  The memory that stuck with me this time was its beautiful view.  We went to visit the IFC bulding at Central and got up to the HK Monetary Board (金管局) on 55/F. It's supposed to be an exhibit about HK money, but since IFC is the highest bulding in HKG, the daytime harbour view from there was spectacular!  We also went to an outdoor pub there, called Red, on the 4/F.  It has an outdoor patio with an excellent harbour view.  Most of the clients there were white, so I feel like I'm sipping wine in Vancouver but with a HKG harbour view!  For night view, we went to the Peak with two of our friends (Stan and Eunice).  There were laser/light shows every night at 8pm in the harbour.  Lights on the tall buildings will flash sychroniously and laser/spotlights are placed on top of buildings.  It's amazing! The picture above is the view taken from my ferry ride across the harbour.

We also went to "中灣" (see picture above) twice.  It's a place where "members" hang out in skinny speedos (or nothing).  It's quite a sight!

    Okay ... back to jetlagging.
  • Post Vacation

Just came back from 3 weeks of vacationing in Hong Kong and Taipei.  It's been 2 weeks and I'm still jet-lagging, waking up at 4am on most nights.

It's also been tough to get back into working mode again.  Not sure if it's because of my low energy level, or I've hit "another" dead-end, I have been feeling so bored at work lately.

  • SYTYCD - Sabra Won!

So the winner of this season's So You Think You Can Dance is Sabra!   I loved her because she just give out this energy of pure talent when she dance.  When she dance, she doesn't count the steps, she actually dance!

She danced with Neil, a cute gymist/dancer in this Jazz routine about power struggle:

She has so much chemistry when dancing with Dominic, a B boy who always has something funny to say:
