It is winter here in London and we are fast approaching the winter solstice – and I really feel my life being pulled towards the depths of winter – in rhythm with the season. I kind of feel like my life is hibernating.
Funny, T S Eliot likes winter. In The Wasteland talks about winter being warm, shielding us from life:
APRIL is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.
I guess that’s what I feel like at the moment. A dried tuber pulsating a little life.
Yesterday I went shopping for Tomi. She gave me a bit of a list for my German trip. Wasn’t sure how many people a Christmas pudding would serve (my directive was 6) so involved quite a few of the shoppers in Tescos as to their opinion on how many people the Tescos Christmas pud would serve. Not one of them concurred – one bloke said that the pudding was just enough for him, one skinny bird-like women said it would feed 10 – so I haven’t a flippin’ clue.
Had a hilarious time trying to find hair gel. Tomi’s direction was gel for her hair, “dark and lovely” with a red top. Anyway, went to an afro-caribbean hair product shop in Finsbury Park and managed to involve all the available shop staff and the manager in this quest for this red topped hair gel. Had to text Tomi a few times and my phone, with text was passed round the staff as they puzzled as to what product Tomi could possibly be referring to. Tomi’s last directive was “something to slick it back” and we finally settled on “Dark and Lovely – quick styling get” – purple top, not red by the way. I left with the manager sending Tomi his very best. I think we brightened up their day.
Johney and I went out for an early supper in China town last night. Cheep and according to Johney “not so cheerful” – I didn’t notice the clientele, but Johney was quite vocal about the “chavs” who would apparently eat their meal with fags dribbling out of their mouths… I don’t think we are going back there again. It was cheap though.
Anyway, will now sign off
