A friend and I recently came up with what we think are probably the two best-known, most-recognized bass lines associated with a specific song (rather than something generic, like a boogie bass line): "Linus and Lucy" and "Peter Gunn."

Agree? Disagree? Have another to add to the list?

I dunno. A whole generation of kids like me who grew up watching the Chips Ahoy TV commercial recognize the little trombone part from the beginning very well. I don't know whether that could be counted as a bass line though...you know what I'm talking about, that part at the beginning of "Sing, Sing, Sing" that goes 'duh-da, duh, duh-da, duh, duh-da' etc. over the tom toms at the beginning? Everybody who watched TV in the 90's knows that one!

Yeah, I think "Ice, Ice, Baby" could be added to the list! We were thinking more along the lines of things in the jazz/blues cannon when we came up with the first two, though.

No, I wouldn't count the opening to "SSS" as a bass line, but I do remember that Chips Ahoy commercial!

Peter Gunn definitely is recognized by all. How bout the Theme from JAmes Bond? everybody knows that. "duh-da-ka-da-duh, da-da-da, dun-da-ka-da-dah-dah-dah" "Screaming horn section!!" Oh, I love it!
