More Than a Native Speaker: An Introduction for Volunteers Teaching English Abroad

Ok, I definitely just woke up and feel like I have a million things to do still. Luckily I make lists like a banshee, mainly just to make myself feel better about being a procrastinator. I currently have lists on: Stuff I need to get done today (that one feels endless), Stuff I need to bring for Russia, Clothes I need to bring for Russia, Toiletries I need to bring for Russia, Clothes for LA, Teaching Aids I need to complete...and that's it so far. Somehow I feel like that organized the Lael maddness.

Being on xanga is nowhere on any of those lists.

Friends are great. And they made me super happy by giving me a going away party.

Friends are also very twisted and cynical. A pool full of dead puppies??? A sad but true story folks, yet apparently a very funny one in certain circles.

Yes, the rumors are trues, Cory really is Satan. (But not really...only when we play ERS with too many folk)

I have a request from you guys...
"Devote yourselves to prayer being watchful and thankful. And pray for us too, that God may open a door for our message so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ..."
That's in Colossians somewhere---ch. 3 maybe? Anyway, Paul always puts it so much better so I stole his words. It really ends, "for which I am in chains", but, well, that part is less applicable to my situation, seeing as I'm not in chains.

Prayer is definitely on my side for this. I've never taught before. I've never been to Russia before. I've never not had hot water before. Or washed clothes by hand. So many things about this situation are firsts, but I've prayed before. And let God work before. And I'll let those cancel all the other stuff out.

Hmm...Jon's in LA. That's a nice thought.

See you all in August....keep cool my babies.

Now those last ones I stole from the great Conan O'brien.

I guess it's about that time. Update time. I know you're all on the edge of your seats, anticipating what will happen next on the Lael Show.

Not a whole lot.

Sorry to dissapoint.

I biked a very hefty trail today. Without water, just to show I'm tough.

Just kidding, my bike just doesn't have a water bottle holder yet. Luckily there were water fountains placed at stategic points along the trail. Otherwise, I may have spontaneously evaporated. But hey, at least then I would have become part of the water cycle and I could come back to rain on your plants and make them grow.

Moving on...

I had a random conversation today with a Starbucks employee. I was trying to brush up on my Russian over a nice cup of deliciousness (i.e Breakfast Blend). He was sweeping and it was just a nice get to know you kind of a conversation. I love sporadically getting to know friendly people. It's just something so beautifully out of the ordinary. So he was waiting for friends to come meet him after work, and through random conversation I learned that he broke his arm in a 7 car accident. See the good stories you pick up from strangers? Now I can say I know a guy who broke his arm in a 7 car accident. Great for parties.

Man, Jon's doing/learning some brilliant things out in California. I wish I could be out there too. I actually was planning to do what he's doing this summer, before he knew that's what he was going to do (make sense?). But Nathan's (my brother's) wedding kinda got in the way...who gets married anyway?? (except cool people) Well, now I'm going to Russia, so it worked out in the end.

I've been in think hard mode lately. It's even better when I'm buzzed on coffee.

I never realize I miss coffee until I drink it.

Thanks to Julianne Nabb, I've found an awesome church here in Tulsa. That's nice.

I'm reading a very good book right now. That's also nice.

I am a very happy individual.

"Missions is not the ulitmate goal of the church. Worship is. Missions exist because worship doesn't. Worship is ultimate, not missions, because God is ultimate, not man." ~John Piper

This was terribly lengthy...

Hmm...I'm home. Isn't that supposed to be a good thing?

I'm home. I didn't fall off the end of the earth...well, unless you consider Fort Smith, AR off the end of the earth. Some might be willing to debate the point. Don't tell the Arkies I said so, they might riot and lynch me or something. Just kidding, I love Arkansas and Fort Smith is actually way more interesting than Broken Arrow...until we get our Pei Wei, that is.

I was gone for a week visiting the lovely Jonathan Crabtree. His sister came and picked me up last Wednesday, and we did some serious vintage shopping here in Tulsa before hitting the road. It was glorious. I bought a fabulous yellow sixties dress---all of you should be very jealous. Jon's plane was late and didn't come in until Thursday, but when it did...that was pretty glorious too. He didn't have a razor in Amsterdam, so he was sporting the mountain man look. He had some pretty amazing stuff to tell. The Red Light District is a pretty twisted place under all that terrible glitz, but God is working even there.

Jon just dropped me off here at home a couple hours ago. That makes me incredibly sad.

I can't wait to do some serious biking. Feel free to join.

Russia feels so close now.

But first LA...training.

Luckily, Jon will also be in LA doing some missions training. An anticipated reunion.

Well, that's it for now. Take luck friends...I want to see everyone many a jolly good time before I leave!

 Two weeks!

(contrary to how this appears, we are NOT drunk in this photograph)

Summer is really underway now, and it's molto fun thus far. I love seeing folk I don't see during the year, catching up, discussing gay marriage, etc. It's lovely.

I've begun an underground. LADIES Poker ring!! If you are interested, drop me a line--even if you don't know how to play. It's not just for the male sex anymore!!!

Operation Paint is officially in progress. I've completed an entire (large) wall in my parents living room and it's coming on nicely. I didn't like the color at first, but now I do. Interesting...

Not working is nice at first, until you realize that you have no income. Then it's still nice, but...well, yeah it's still nice, just in a less money-ish kind of way.

The third happiest day of my life has occurred, oddly enough before my first 2 happiest (my wedding day and the birth of my first child) have even taken place.......We are getting a Pei Wei in Broken Arrow!!! I think that's all I need to say.

Ok fourth happiest, I think when I actually eat there a mere 4 miles from my house--that will be the third happiest.

Man, I'm getting so pumped for Russia! All of Jon's emails have me itching to go. Sometimes I worry that I'm going to suck as a teacher and my students will hate me...and then I remember whose sending me, and it's a pretty great feeling.  God is magnificent---and Faith in Him is the greatest thing in the world. I mean that, the greatest joy. It's true. Truer than any true I've ever known. Indeed.

"Central to the Christian experience is the art of questioning God. Not belligerent, arrogant questions that have no respect for our maker, but naked, honest, vulnerable, raw questions, arising out of the awe that comes from engaging the living God."
~From Velvet Elvis

A week and a half down, one week to go...

Lael= overwhelmed
Jon= gone to do missions in Amsterdam until May 31
Lael= party like it's 1999!!!!woooo!!!!
Lael= just kidding
Lael really = sad...

So that was for all you math minded folk. I had birthday dinner saturday night at PF Chang's with Jon and la mia famiglia. Yummy. Later that night Jon got pulled over for drunk driving because he forgot to turn his lights on upon exiting QT. Luckily he was not drunk so nothing happened.

I'm going to paint the living room for my parents. I'm pumped, but in the end I'll probably pull a Tom Sawyer and coax the neighbor kids into finishing it (just kidding).

I'm going bike shopping tonight. I can't wait to have a bike again, this time avoiding large trucks and keeping my collar bone in tact. I hear they have some fabulous bike trails now, so this oughtn't be an issue.

Tell me how summers are going!!!!!
