| Obama's "Controversial" PastorI'm sure everybody's heard of the "controversial" remarks made by Rev.
Jeremiah Wright, formerly Barack Obama's pastor in Chicago.
One of the most "controversial" statements follows...
-"The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a
three-strikes law and then wants us to sing, ‘God Bless America.’ No,
no, no, God damn America, that’s in the Bible, for killing innocent
people. God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.”
Honestly, I see absolutely nothing wrong with Wright's message...
His delivery may be a little strong, but anybody familiar with most Black preachers already knows that's their oratory style.
And content wise, Wright is dead on...
America has been and to a certain extent still is a breeding ground for
a cesspool wherein racism, sexism, and classism, run rampant. That can
not be denied.
The disparities in income between races and sexes is more than proof of
the lingering effects of a society whose founding precepts demanded
better.
But you know what?
People don't like to hear that...
People don't like to hear that maybe, just mayyyybeeee...there's a
reason why much of the world hates us. Maybe, just mayyyybeeee...our
actions, both abroad and domestic, have rendered us as a class of
individuals who talk a big game (the declaration of independence and
such...) but who in many instances have failed to live up to its
promise.
Am I saying that America "deserved" 9/11?
No...
I mourn the deaths of those thousands along with everyone else...
Just as Barack Obama and Rev. Wright do.
But...I am saying, as are many others in this country, that is past due
time for America to look at its own tattered history and realize that
for far too long we as American citizens have thought that we are the
supreme leaders of the universe.
One of the biggest problems I have about this whole fiasco is that the
media has taken little buzzwords like "God damn America" and used them
to describe Wright...without realizing that when taken in context, the
Reverend's statements are some of the most patriotic things out there.
But of course, the proverbial other side won't see it that way...
As Mark Twain said..."The nation is divided, half patriots and half traitors, and no man can tell which from which."
I hope that we eventually get over this division and move towards a "more perfect union," as Obama so eloquently put it.
| Can't We All Just Get Along? No, really...
If you haven't heard, this picture was recently dug up...
It's basically being used by Clinton's camp/Conservatives to say that Barack is a Muslim terrorist...
Why else would he wear Kenyan garb that has absolutely nothing to do with terrorism, patriotism, or any other ism?
Sarcasm intended...
Now, I was bout'a write a stinging, angry'ish, rant thingamajig that
basically would've said that this whole scheme was a childish ploy used
by racist hicks to falsely discredit Obama and make people think that
all Muslims are terrorists.
But I think the ignorance of that line of thinking is fairly obvious, so I'm gonna focus on other things.
Like the fact that even the robot/aka Hillary Clinton, has been known to wear some "terrorist" attire...
a hem...
But beyond that, I got to thinking about this whole audacity of hope business...
And what practically having this rhetorical, reconciliatory mindset actually means...
It means that I'm gonna have to befriend some racist hicks...
It means that I really would have to reach across the proverbial aisle
and be willing to listen to those whose views differ from my own...and
that they would have to be willing to do the same.
The process would probably be helped along if I stopped calling them hicks...
But if we really want to "reach across the aisle" all of this back and
forth name calling, simplistic-minded, childish, ish needs to stop...
Now, I realize that's a heavy statement...especially considering the
fact that campaigns are seemingly run by children sometimes. ("Mom
she's touching me" is kinda reminiscent of "You don't have enough
experience, Barack")
Beyond that, though...I really hope we as a nation, as a world,
eventually come to a more cohesive mindset...because at the end of the
day, most people are looking for the same things: some type of comfort
of an afterlife, purpose, and somebody to split half of your money with
if you're unfortunate enough to not sign a prenup.
So, as I sit here unable to sleep (yet again...insomnia can kiss my
arse), I can't help but wonder...help but have the audacity of hope (a
ha) that all of this bipartisanship talk of the campaign actually comes
to fruition...that we as a people realize we have more in common than
not...and that we started acting like we have a little bit of love for
each other...
Can't we all just get along?
Well, I guess that's the problem.
Too often, we can't...
Maybe we're in a new era of gettingalong'ness, though...
I can hope... | | |
| Happy Day of Pseudo LoveStrangely enough, I've finished all of my work for today... Which leaves me workless and bored...
And what do I do when I'm bored?
You got it...write.
So hurr we go...writing entirely too much, volume 845...
Ummm, so I've heard from a little birdy that today is Singles Awareness Day...
So, first off Happy Valentine's Day to everybody.
Second off (if there's such a thing as second off) all of this holiday
mumbo jumbo has left me wondering (as I so often do) if "true love" is
out there for everybody...I mean some folk have to go the Paul,
marriageless route, right?
Is it bad that I hope that's not me?
Paul's great and all...
But really, though. I'd like to find my Jasmine in Aladdin, si
posible...I think we all would, to a point. Speaking of which, I used
to be in love with her...Jasmine I mean...
But I digress...
To get to the crux of things...lately I've been seeing a bunch of
articles about polygamists and polymorists, folks who basically can't
be committed to one person so they just don't have any commitments, and
sleep with as many folk as possible. Fun, right?
It seems like this non-committal thing is becoming increasingly
popular...to the point where a lot of folk seem to actually consider
this a viable way of doing things. Now, maybe I'm messed up in the
head, but I've never been one to understand going out with multiple
women at the same time (I think they also call it cheating)...But what
do I know?... monogamy just might be too much to ask in this day and
age, eh? Seems like it...
But it all leaves me slightly perplexed...and worried, to an extent.
I realize that not everybody's taking the poly route, but I can't help
this feeling of foreboding that our generation's just gonna continue
this trend of increasing divorces, more affairs, and the like...all in
the pursuit of physical pleasure. In the end, it just leaves you
wondering if anybody can be trusted. And yet, I trust myself...I think.
Soooo, that would hopefully mean that there's a trustworthy counterpart
out there. God, ya heard? Hello? Ummm, God?
I just hope that there's something more out there...that this thing
called love actually exists. That Singles Awareness Day, errr,
Valentine's Day, is more than a simple ploy to get people to guiltily
buy candy and jewelry.
Speaking of hope...Barack Obama is kinda a beast...just sayin...
| Thoughts on Barack's "viability"Between three calls in the past hour and my mind racing, this midday nap thing ain't working...
So, I write...
I've been deeply troubled about two things recently...
All of these people saying that Barack Obama either...
a. doesn't have enough experience
OR
b. is gonna be shot...
Now, I'll take these jaints one by one. As far as experience goes, it
means little to nothing to me. There are a lot of dumbarses in the DC
area who are quite experienced. Dick Cheney has one of the longest
resumes in government...
Yea, experience is just what we need...sarcasm intended.
This other issue is far more serious, and to a point, valid.
Unfortunately we still live in a fairly racist country. There will
always be country hicks (and city hicks for that matter) that take one
look at us as black folks or minorities and get a little salty,
especially if we hold any positions of power.
But when are we gonna stop making our decisions out of fear?
Seriously...
Martin Luther King Jr could've said..."oh, dahwell, guess I can't fight
for my right to be treated as a man today...the KKK will have a fit.."
Malcolm X, or virtually any other civil rights leader could've easily
said the same...But they didn't. They didn't let fear control their
lives...and neither should we.
By no means am I saying that Barack should be a sacrificial lamb or
anything like that...on the contrary, I pray for his safety everyday.
But if he has enough courage to stand up for what he believes in,
despite the threats on his life, shouldn't we as his supporters stand
up for him just the same?
Change has to come at some time...
We can't continue to be scared. Because if we are, if we act out of
fear and just play complacent by never voting for a minority candidate,
our children's children will continue to live in a society as ignorant
as this one where people are still judged by skin color and not merit.
Whatever the case...
I hope that everybody votes...either by absentee vote or in person. We
can't keep complaining about the government if we don't do anything to
change it...and our chance to change comes through our vote. Use it...
"We are the ones we've been waiting for"
| I think I'm expected to continue the family line soon......and this worries me.
I love my grandmas...both of them, to death.
BUT, I'm getting a little scared of them...
As Valentine's Day rolls around, I've had convos w/ them recently...and both of them said something to the effect of este...
Grannie--So, you have any Valentine's Plans?
Me--No, hadn't really thought too much about it.
Grannie--Oh...well...(disappointed face). Well, Joe, you know you need to start working on that...I'm gonna need some grandbabies at some point.
And then, I started cracking up
I think they were kidding...
I sincerely hope they were kidding...
But if they weren't, I'm slightly worried...Especially as they start bringing potential ladies around me...
I didn't sign up for an arranged marriage!
Children?
I'm in college, yo...
And why does this topic always come up at Valentine's Day?
How does a flying, overweight, slightly homo erotic, pale baby who shoots arrows at people, get folks in the mood for "love?"
I personally don't want to get shot with an arrow...
Everybody's on this "I need a Valentine" tip...
No you don't.
You need yourself...and that's it. And sure, everyone's looking for
something substantive, but it shouldn't be defined by a
day...especially since substance appears to be hard to find..
Why should I be forced to pursue bun'ness (yes, it's a word) for the
sake of the establishment...I'm not listening to The Man/homo'ish
baby...
By the way...
Who is The Man?
And by the deuce...
What is up with all of these sudden PDA's?
I mean, I love the John Legend song (actually, that whole CD is quite
fresh), but do I really need to see folks trying to stick their tongue
down their mate's throat while attempting to disrobe them? I'd prefer
not to...especially not as I'm eating at Subway on my lunch
break...bammas
