Hey, Everyone-

We're participating in Operation Christmas Child again this year. Basically, all we do is fill a shoe box with stuff. Then, the shoe box is sent to a special kid as a unique gift... It's not asking much from us, so it shouldn't be tough to get at least one of these boxes together as a Sunday school class.

We can make one for a boy or a girl (2-4 yrs old, 5-9 yrs old, or 10-14 yrs old). We haven't decided on one yet, but I'm thinking we can make a box for a girl 5-9 yrs old. (If there aren't any objections, let's go ahead with this gender/age group.)

Recommended items include:
- toys: small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, small etch-a-sketch, toys that light up or make noise (with extra batteries), slinky, etc
- school supplies: pens, pencils and sharpener, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, coloring books, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, etc
- hygiene items: toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap (in a plastic bag), comb, washcloth, etc
- other: hard candy, lollipops, mints, gum, sunglasses, flashlights (with extra batteries), ball caps, socks, t-shirts, toy, jewelry, hair clips, watches, small picture books, etc.

Please do NOT include:
- used items
- war-related items (toy guns, knives, etc)
- chocolate or perishable food items
- liquids: shampoo, liquid soap, lotion, bubbles, etc
- medicines: vitamins, cough drops, ointment, etc
- breakable items: mirrors, china dolls, snowglobes, etc

Alrighty...
Keep in mind that everything's gotta fit in a standard shoe box. (I'll bring one.) Look through your stuff at home to see what you've got before heading out to the store. (But please remember that used items would be inappropriate for this project.)

Please reply to the e-mail with what you intend to contribute for this project, so people don't end up bringing too much of one category (toys / school supplies / hygiene items / etc).

PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO BRING YOUR CONTRIBUTION(S) ON SUNDAY!
(and/or next sunday... but earlier is always better. if you're a UH-er, you can give it to Anh Nguyen at school, too.)

Have a good weekend. Take care.

Update time...

Last Sunday, there was an abbreviated service, but Sunday school classes were cancelled. Thank God that everyone is alright after the Hurricane Rita episode...

The Sunday prior to that (September 19, 2005), Dave subbed for our class, and we learned about the characteristics of God. Here's the handout:

Soli Deo Gloria

1. Look up the following passages and write down all the names and characteristics of God these verses list:

Gen 15:1 "your shield"; "your very great reward" => protector, satisfaction, all we need

Gen 15:7 "LORD"

Ex 3:14 "I AM WHO I AM" - He will be Who He will be; can't box him into our finite understanding

Isa 45:21 "no God apart from me"; "righteous God"; "Savior"; "none but me"

Jn 17:3 "the only true God" - eternal life = know God & Jesus Christ

Deut 4:31 "merciful"; "will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant"

Deut 33:29 "shield"; "helper"; "glorious sword"

Ps 144:2 "loving God"; "thy fortress"; "my stronghold"; "my deliverer"; "my shield"; "in whom I take refuge who subdues people under me"

Isa 37:16 "LORD Almighty"; "God of Israel"; "enthroned"; "you alone are God"

Isa 40:28 "everlasting God"; "creator of the ends of the earth"; "not grow tired/weary"; "his understanding no one can fathom"

1 Tim 6:15 "the blessed and only Ruler"; "King of kings"; "Lord of lords"

2. Look up Ex 20:5-6, Ex 34:14, Deut 4:23-24, Deut 6:14-15, Josh 24:19-20. According to these verses, what is another characteristic of God, and what 2 things does he forbid us to do because of it? How should this affect our lives?
jealous; don't follow other gods; "the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God" (Dt 4:24)

3. Why is it okay for God to be jealous when he tells us not to?
because He deserves our worship; we're not to be jealous because our jealousy stems from our selfishness- that which is not ours; self-seeking

4. Read Isa 42:8 and Ezek 20:9, 14, 22. For what is God jealous?
won't give His glory to another or praise to idols; jealous for His glory, His name

5. From these verses, what do you think is God's ultimate mission?
His glory

6. Read Gen 12:1-3. What does God say he will do for his people? What are they to do in return?
He will bless them and make them into a great nation, bless those who bless them, and curse those who curse them. They will become a blessing, and all the people of the earth will be blessed through them.

Take care, everyone. I hope all is well... God bless.
