| When you only have ... ONE MONTH!
AT THE TABLE: A few years ago, there was a shift in Sex and the City watercooler chat from nameplate necklaces to Kim Cattrall's body. "She was spending more and more time on the show wearing less and less," says nutritionist Oz Garcia. "A little over a month before the new season started filming, she came to me wanting to get leaner and stronger." The muffins, pasta, and bread that accounted for much of Cattrall's daily menu were history. But Garcia didn't make her go 100 percent Atkins. "We ust switched ver to low-glycemic carbohydrates -- ones that don't make blood sugar soar -- like whole grains and Kashi GoLean cereal," he says. Not surprisingly, high-fat foods were also out.
Cattrall didn't starve herself, though. Garcia recommended she eat frequent small meals with lean protein at each, with an emphasis on fish. Cattrall also ate more vegetables and fruit, especially berries. Breakfast might consist of an egg-white omelet with feta cheese and some blueberries; lunch or dinner could be a salad nicoise; and snacks might include a handful of mixed nuts, string cheese, or a high-protein power bar. Garcia let Cattrall indulge in the occasional glass of red wine (up to three per week) and a square or two of dark chocolate.
Although he advocates this Mediterranean-influenced plan for anyone, Garcia says that women who want to lose weight on a deadline also need to exercise frequently and eat around 1,400 to 1,600 calories a day.
IN THE GYM "Even Heidi Klum came to me with some body issues a few weeks before this year's Victoria's Secret fashion show," says trainer David Kirsch. "Let's face it: There's no room for jiggle when all you're wearing is feathers and a bra." Her buildup to the big event included daily hour-and-a-half-long workouts. Kirsch's strategy: Alternate intense strength moves with bursts of cardio, such as one minute of jumping jacks, "so her heart rate was always up." Two weeks before the show, Kirsch added 30 to 45 minutes on the elliptical machine to Klum's routine three times a week. Because Klum is relatively pear shaped (for a model), Kirsch emphasixed thigh-tightening, butt-firming moves like plie squats and bench step-ups. He also included exercises to tone the rest of her body -- abdomincal crunches, shadowboxing for the back and shoulders, and triceps kick-backs for arms. She runs through the whole workout four times. "When you're as disciplined as Heidi is and repeatedly taxing every single muscle group, you can reduce body fat by 5 to 8 percent in a month," Kirsch says. For those who want to work out on their own, Kirsch recommends doing 30 to 45 minutes of cardio and following a cross-training strength routine like Klum's or an instructional tape a few times a week.

| When you... are Jessica Alba Jessica Alba has a knockout body. In fact, Maxim magazine recently voted her #2 hottest babe after 'Desperate Housewives' Eva Longoria. So, just what does it take to get that killer bod into Maxim-worthy shape? A source reports Jessica Alba has been on a diet since the age of 12.
Jessica said, "Everyone in my family is heavily overweight. I wanted to
be healthier, so I started cooking for myself when I was 12 years old.
When I eat breakfast, I'll have an egg-white omelette and fruit, or
cottage cheese and a peach. For lunch, I'll have a salad. Dinner is
usually vegetables and chicken or fish. During the day I'll have some
dried fruit, or I'll have a chocolate or strawberry frozen yogurt. I
don't really eat desserts or bread."
Regarding her workout routine, Jessica said, "I try to work out every day for 45 minutes to an hour. I start out on the treadmills or elliptical machine for 10 to 15 minutes to get my heart rate up to 180 beats per minute. Then I do 50 lunges and crunches. Next I get back on the machine for another 10 minutes. Then I work on shoulders, biceps and triceps. I do that nonstop for four sets. When I work out, I have energy and feel good about myself." | | |
| When you have ... ONE WEEKIN THE GYM: When Mandy Moore wanted ot lose that eigth of an inch that Holywood calls "baby fat," Los Angeles trainer Ashley Borden launched her on a five-day program that bordered on military --two hour-long, cardio-heavy workouts a day. "Every morning, she idd a half hour on the elliptical machine, increasing the level from 6 to 8 over the week," she says. "Immediately following that, Mandy walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes at about 3.7 miles per hour, at about an 8 percent incline." Borden helped Moore stay at her targe heart rate. "Mandy always wore a heart monitor, and because she hadn't really exercised before, we aimed for around 70 percent at first," Borden says. "But someone who's already in shape should aim for 75 to 80 percent." Moore at first felt "spastic and uncoordinated," Borden says. To improve her balance and strength, the day's second workout included yoga-like poses, Pilates-inspired rubber-band moves, liftin weights, and stretching. A woman could do all of them on her own. "Every evening, we'd do 45 minutes of strenght work, and then another half hour of cardio," Borden says. "Yes, it's an intense week -- especially since she combined it with a strict eating schedule. Mandy got amazingly lean in the process-- and confident enough to go running on the beach in just sneakers and a bathing suit." | | |
