A Theology of Substance

I don’t mean substance as in a theology that has something to it. I’m talking about something rather controversial within the church: alcohol and tobacco. I grew up in a home where drinking and smoking were wrong period. If you know me at all, you know that I enjoy a drink as well as a good pipe or clove cigarette once in awhile. I did not come to enjoy such things until I came to college – both after I had come to the appropriate age.

The Bible does not address smoking at all but it has a lot to say about drinking. Never does Gods word forbid someone from a drink but it has a lot to say about those who become intoxicated. Here are a few examples: [Read More]

Developments

Over the past few weeks the following has happened:

1. I lost my job at KDCR.
2. I told that I was not allowed to live on campus for the month of august because of the above.
3. I was told that I would not be considered for a job on Dordt Security because of #1.
4. I am now living near campus thanks to the charity of Ron Rynders, who works in Student services .

Its all been a big headache but I thank God for Ron and his wife. May God bless them ten fold for their kindness to me.

Spiritually, I've been rather dry as of late - I hate to make excuses and I apologize if this sounds like one but school may have burned me out. I have trouble just picking up the bible beyond Sunday service and the only books that I have read all summer have been in the political realm. Writing has also been tough; I sent off a few letters over the summer and beyond the casual Facebook/MSN/Channel chatting I really have written nothing thought provoking or spiritual.

I think my biggest hurdle right now is the feelings of loneliness, inadequacy, and futility. Numbers one, two, and three have deeply influenced those feelings (as well as other things); I feel like I've failed, maybe I have failed. I don't feel anywhere near to the kind of man I should be. I feel bitter; not just over this whole ordeal, but just bitter in general; I don't want to feel that way but I feel as if I can't let go, I think I'm afraid to let go.

A lot of time went bye between now and that last paragraph. There's so much inside that I'm thinking about but I don't know how to write it all down or if I even should write it down. Maybe I will later but for now let me just say that I covet your prayers as I push on and struggle to keep faith and hope in times frightening and unpredictable. A picture is unfolding, I just cannot see it yet.

A big thanks to Dr. James R. White for his book Is the Mormon my Brother? The book was my primary source for quotes. This was my term paper for Heresies and Sects class here at Dordt College.

Mormonism

The question was once settled: is the Mormon religion a Christian one? I once asked a young Mormon that question and his reply was this: “How can I not be a Christian? I worship Jesus, I read the bible; how can I not be a Christian?” There are many who think that simply because a religion has Jesus Christ and the bible included, it must fall under the world’s wide umbrella of Christendom. The mindset of the culture is if it looks like a rose and smells like a rose it must be a rose. Mormonism does indeed look and sound Christian in many aspects. I for one as a young child was fooled by the LDS because of the advertisements on TV for their life of Jesus video. Mormons will talk about Jesus Christ and will even claim Him as their Lord and Savior but, as stated above, simply knowing Christianese does not mean that you are a Christian. What is it that separates Mormonism from Biblical Christianity? We do not have ample space to discuss every single detail in full; people that are more knowledgeable have written indeed entire books on the subject; I wish to center on a doctrine that most separates Mormonism from Christianity: their doctrine of God. Mitt Romney Comes to Sioux Center

I did not have the time to attend Gov. Romneys rally but I was able to shake the mans hand just before he left. Gov. Romney is a professing Mormon as you all probably know. The Lord granted me the wonderful privelage of ministering to Gov. Romney by giving him a book writtnen by a dear friend and brother in The Christ, Dr. James R. White; the book I gave him is called Is the Mormon My Brother? Romney smiled when I gave him the book and handed it to an aid; please pray that He reads it, please pray that God will draw Mr. Romney
