The 10k race

My feet felt heavy from the rain that had soaked through my socks and shoes.  I wiped the rain out of my eyes, only to have more water drip down my hair and forehead into my eyes again a couple minutes later.  Despite the weather today, I was able to make my target of running faster than a 8:00 minute mile pace.  My finish time for the Monument Avenue 10k was 48:43 (7:50.3 split/mile).

Being only my second race, running in today's 10k was a good learning experience.  I think I should have started a little faster, since I ran my last mile about 30 seconds faster than my first.  Part of the reason why I started slow was because my muscles were feeling a little tight from yesterday's sprints.  Hal Higdon's 10k training plans recommend 1-2 days of rest prior to the event.  I think this would have been better for me than the sprints recommended by Runner's World plan (although the latter was better in other aspects).  Today's run was definitely more taxing on my leg muscles than on my cardiovascular system.  So some weight training and doing more sprints would have been helpful in my training regimen in the weeks prior to an event.

All said, it was pretty good race.  Thanks again to everybody who offered support and encouragement!  I beat my time last year by a couple of minutes and enjoyed the event in spite of the weather.  I saw several friends and familiar faces and got to catch up with some people.  Some of the runners dressed up in costumes and drew laughs from participants and fans.  My favorite was a runner dressed as a gorilla, running after another runner wearing a banana costume.  If any of you haven't run in a race before, definitely give it a shot!  It might sound tough, but it's really not bad once you take the first step to sign up and go on a few practice runs.

awesome time, and kudos for beating last year's time by a few MINUTES! that certainly shows you put in some serious training.

i can understand the leg pain during your race -- you really should NOT have run sprints the day before a race. my running group takes at least the day before off, and one of my buddies takes the entire week off. it is your body though, and people recover differently. i wonder if maybe your stride wasn't exactly right.

i ran the cherry blossom today alone *in miserable cold rain too* and realized that everyone paces themselves just a little differently. you could've done better by starting at speed (your goal pace) and hanging on for the last few miles. i used to take this tactic with my run group, but after today's race, i realized i'm better off warming up over a distance, going from 8:00 to 7:45 over a course of 3-4 miles, but of course, only for long distance races.
