| I read this poem... thingy.... and I thought it was really good! So you guys should read it. ok here goes:
"Our Discarded Daily Bread"
By: Eldon Wagler
That he was kneeling
bare-handedly picking up the crumbs,
is what caught my eye.
We know each other's movements.
Abu Ahmed sweeps streets.
Before sunup he stirs the alleys of
Old Damascus clean of
ancient dust and our recent litter.
I too circle the alleys at dawn's first light,
running solely to clear mind and body,
and wearing a pair of nikes that would cost
a whole month of Abu Ahmed's salary.
This morning I saw him from afar
and he was on his knees
crouched over by his grimy push cart,
leaving his gloves, broom and dustpan
off to one side.
I slowed my run
as I approached the kneeling figure:
"Ya'tik al-Afiya," I said like every morning,
"God give you strength."
For there he knelt,
picking up crumbles of
a flat bread loaf
from off the alley floor,
putting the scraps to the side
in a separate bag in his cart
so they wouldn't
be trodden underfoot.
"Allah ya'fik" Abu Ahmed responded,
"God give you strength" too
Yet what do I know of strength
pounding these primeval streets
merely to run out personal demons,
while Abu Ahmed lifts gently,
from under our feet
our discarded daily bread.

| Ok I have some more time so I am going to ramble some more... ok... I lost what I was going to say!!! It was something profound too..... umm!!!! Well this wasn't what I was thinking... but I can ramble on about this. I think I have figured out why I like Toronto so much. Its cause of the people. I know that might sound weird... cause the people there are kinda... well quiet and snobby. They don't say hi or greet people, or even look at other people when they are walking. I guess they can be seen as rude. But for some reason this makes me VERY interested in their stories. In my Time Based Media class we were talking about some video projects that some famous people have done. Where they do something to change the enviroment around people and it catches them off gaurd and makes them give responses that are out of the normal. Like you know Patch Adams when he said "Hello" in weird ways to change peoples programmed responses? Well it is kinda like that. One movie was done by and girl and it was called, "I'm so sorry (a public apology)" and basically it was this girl and about 8 other friends and they dressed up in BIG paper bags that they wore over their heads. The bags were huge and reached down to their knees. Then they cut eye holes in it so that they could see out, but you can't see in. All of these people crammed themselves into a small entrance to an apartment building. And as people walked in the door, every single one of them would say, "I am so sorry.." "I am soo sorry." as the people passed. The people would have to walk through these people to get to the stairs. and it was amazing the responses that came with that!! Some people were weirded out (don't blame them) but some people gave interesting responses. THEN! there was this other one where this guy went into all the malls and crowded areas of TO and would get into the longest line he could find. and when someone would get in line after him, he would turn to them and say, " Oh, you can go first!" "Allow me..." and stuff like that, and he would let them get in line ahead of him. He has no intention of actually doing anything in that line except let people cut him, but by doing that one simple thing people totally change their attitudes. People would come and look at the line and sigh and get a REALLY annoyed and angry expression on their face. But by letting them cut in line in front of him, he makes them smile and suddenly the line isn't so long anymore and they don't mind waiting. He had sooo many conversations with these "grumpy" people just by doing this one simple thing.
This is what gets me about TO people. They seem grumpy and unfriendly when you first see them, but holding open a door for somebody, or giving up a seat on the subway... or holding the elevator, etc. makes people change sooo MUCH! It is amazing how people change colours at something so simple. I guess it has become a challenge, and also kinda fun, so see how many people I can "get to know" in a day. On the outside people in toronto are sooo grumpy and self-focused, but actually there are some AMAZINGLY nice people in this city, you just got to go out of your way to find them. But when you do it is worth it. | | |
