and the day has turned to sunshine

What was a gray day is now sunny- yay!

I just finished up a project and want to take a break before I launch into thesis writing. I was working in the GIS computer lab when my prof, Mary Ann, came in and asked for my advice on an issue she was having with an assignment she gave to her students. We just chatted and she ended up taking my advice on it. It felt great to be able to talk to my professor like a friend. That will be something at I miss at Vassar. The other night I was square dancing with another one of my professors, Kirsten, at Jeff (yet another professor!)'s family barn and we had a lot of fun. The professors in Environmental Studies are so kooky, I love it.

Off to plan... then walk outside for a bit... then come back in to keep on keeping on...

It's been a year since I've last written

It's strange writing on here again. So much has changed over this past year. Became a dean, went to study abroad in Yunnan, had a wonderful time... Now, it's my last semester back at Vassar, and, I must admit it's strange. There's about 40 days before I graduate and I feel almost more out of place here then when I came here four years ago. It's strange living in the dorms when most of the other seniors live in senior housing. I feel pretty out of touch. In some ways, its nice because I don't have to deal with the drama and conflicts that goes on there, and I have my own space, and I'm meeting a lot of other wonderful people from other years... but, at the same time, I must admit it can get lonely. I don't know anyone who lives in the dorms who I feel comfortable just knocking on their door and talking to them, which is a bit sad. I felt like I used to be able to do that with Jina, or Jason, or Liz, or Ken, or a lot of other people, actually... but many of them have either graduated, or moved to senior housing and are busy with their theses. Not that I don't have one to write...

Perhaps, I should take advantage of the time I have to myself and do more contemplative practices... or finish writing my thesis...

It's a school day but I am at home in Brooklyn. I went back for the weekend and then I woke up on Saturday night throwing up and spent my entire Sunday in bed. Really. I felt pretty miserable sleeping all day and not moving. I did, however switch beds three times so to feel like I was moving around. My sleep wasn't really restful. I kept dreaming about South Korean and North Korean politics and Kim Jung Il because I need to write a paper on that. Every time I woke up I would think "Wow! All that brainstorming... I must be finished with my paper already." Alas. Can you believe it? Haha... I am so sick of thinking of that now... I'm not sure how I will feel writing that paper.

Both my parents had to go to work. Before my dad left for work he prepared lots of things for me next to my bed. This included a kettle of water, a thick water-proof jacket, and a brand new pack of 6 pairs of socks (because I would be cold, he said). He also put out wheat crackers and wheat bread for me on the table. I told my dad that I was allergic to wheat and he was like "Okay, I'll just put it right here for you."

I'm feeling a bit better today. I guess I can go to school tomorrow. Or maybe this afternoon. I'm not sure if that would be pushing it though...

Just when I thought I was starting to catch up with work again...

The best laid plans always go awry.

So I went to an informational session yesterday about the Compton Fellowship and I think that is what I want to do after senior year. The Compton gives you a mentor, one year and $35,000 to carry out a project that deals with social justice, environmental sustainability or a whole slew of other issues. I am so excited about it that I can't even do my work right now. I think this may be my chance to carry out my organic community garden-composting center-environmental education project in Chinatown that I have been planning for a few years now. I'm thinking about what we should plant (hopefully mostly native and perennial plants), how I can get restaurants and vendors to compost, events we can hold in the garden, murals that can be painted, how the design will look and what to name it (well I have that figured out already :) )... At least I have one year to figure out who I want to work with and how I will get land in Chinatown for my proposal. I can't wait... and I haven't even gotten the fellowship yet. Haha, idealism is important, right?
