| Guess What?!?[Mood: Excited] OM got a job! *que the happy dances!* It's just a temp job, but it's 5-10 weeks of full-time work, so its much, much better than nothing. The full story: Thursday, the lady from the temp agency calls and tells OM about the job, says she'll call if she gets details about an interview. We don't hear anything from her, so forget about it. Friday, I drag OM to the art museum. The day started badly (he didn't like my juice - more on that later). Around noon, we're halfway through the first exhibit, and he gets a call... reminding him about his interview at 12:40. Oh crap!!! So we run home, he frantically shaves and gets dressed while I figure out how to get to where he needs to be. We end up being about 15 minutes late, but can you blame him? No, no you can't. So, it was really more of an orientation than an interview - welcome to the company, this will be your job for the next few weeks, etc. Really cool sidenote: OM will be able to walk to work, even when it's raining. There's an underground entrance about a block from our place, and an exit inside the building he'll be working in. So, of course, Friday improved vastly after that. We went home to let OM out of his suit, and finished our trip of the museum. Then we went to The Melting Pot for dinner; a previously agreed upon "when you get a job" celebration dinner site. The waiter took an awful, blurry photo, but we still have proof we went there! Plus, it's right next door to an adorable fountain. (There are fountains everywhere in OKC, it's crazy!) I made OM hold my shoes while I ran and played for a bit. You gotta admit, that's pretty cool.
And, of course - Adventures in Raw Food... 1. That buckwheat cereal? Wow... it was awful! It literally tasted like cardboard. And I can stomach grapenuts! OM and I were going to try for a raw-type oatmeal this week, but there were no oat groats to be had. (OM was quite disappointed.) We had to get Honey Bunches of Oats instead. Believe it or not, it beat Cascadian Farms granola on nutritional facts. 2. I've given way slightly, and consented to the presence of bread in the house. It has to be sprouted grain bread, but real, baked bread nonetheless. Almond butter and banana sandwiches, yum. 3. I can't figure out why, but I can't make V-8 juice taste the way it's supposed to. The recipe called for garlic (which I used half the amount of), so I can only guess that that's what made the juice taste funny. But we'll try again later this week. I juiced 10 oranges today, so that should keep our OJ supply for the week. 4. Zuchini noodles with garlic cashew aeoli? Surprisingly good. Good enough to serve to Daddy? Well... probably not. 5. Oh, and... it's not a great picture, but here's the outside of the Farmer's Market. They had corn and tomatoes this week! P.S. I want to throttle the maintenance guy. Or whoever it is that thinks leaving requests for over two weeks is okay. But don't worry - I made a batch of secret weapon today... chocolate chip cookies! (Pay no attention to the fact that OM and I already ate half the batch.)
| Yup, Still Here[Mood: Bouncy] Okay, I found the cable for the camera charger. Turns out, I'd plugged it into the modem instead. I have about 4 AC converter cables for various things. All but one converts to approx 5V. One converts to 12V. Guess which one I accidentally plugged into my brand new digital photo frame? Oh yes, it was very bad. Lots of smoke. I haven't plugged it in with the correct cable yet; I'm too afraid. But I have the box still, so I may try to exchange it for a new one. If I ever remember to ask Daddy where it came from. But back to the task at hand - more photos!
Auntie K bought us a set of patio furniture for our housewarming gift! The chairs are very comfy. I've had breakfast out on the patio pretty much every day since, and sometimes I go out and read in the evening. Plus, it's fun to spy on the people in the pool. Also, I've been hard at work, unpacking and organizing. Yesterday, I hung up the photos that my cousin took for me, above the couch. Did I mention the great cup shelf OM made for me in the kitchen? The lack of storage has presented several problems, but we were clever enough to solve this one. OM and his dad also put together a new stemware rack for me, when his dad was in town last week. (Or was it the week before? They all blur together when you're sans school and job.) Also of note: you can see the pass-through into the kitchen in this photo. Back to the kitchen - I've reorganized it, and gotten everything the way I wanted it. Here's another view of our organization awesomeness. The poor shelf is completely dominated by my blender and monstrous juicer, which is ever so cool, but takes up a ton of space, because there's no where but the counter with enough room to store it put together (and I won't sacrifice my counter space) And lastly, because I'm so darn proud of it, my clothes/linen closet. And, because I can, I'm going to tell you about our recent raw food adventures.
1. I was correct about the failure of sprouting grains in bulk - in more ways than one. Not only did the buckwheat mold before it dehydrated properly, but after consulting another cookbook, I find that buckwheat doesn't really sprout. So all that time I was waiting for it to sprout? Mold time, baby. I tried to make buckwheat cereal again this week, and it didn't mold this time. I haven't tried any yet, but it's ready for breakfast tomorrow.
2. I am again reminded that you shouldn't try and make raw food imitate life. I made that pizza crust, but didn't even bother making the pizza. The amount of flax seeds in the crust couldn't be covered up by mozzarella and tomato sauce, much less raw veggies. That said, however, I have made pseudo ice cream. Macadamias, dates, coconut water, and vanilla bean... not half bad. Good enough to convince OM to buy an ice cream maker, anyway. 3. Finally, the OKC farmer's market is awesome! OM and I went on Saturday, and we were quite impressed by the size. There were way more vendors than in SA, and much better produce. There were a couple bakers, a cheese maker, and a guy selling buffalo meat. Buffalo hot dogs, btw, are quite tasty. (Hey, we're not totally vegan, you know.)
| Food Forays [Mood: Hungry] Firstly, I suppose I should apologize. I feel compelled to do a little food blogging, so here it goes. Feel free to disregard my insanity.
Now that OM and I are more than a week into our OKC adventure, we decided that we should start our raw food adventure. Or rather, I suggested and OM could only protest with a whimper. We went to Akin's and Wal-Mart for groceries yesterday, with the idea that we would eat half cooked, half raw. Painful price, but I can only hope it gets better. We tried our first raw recipe last night - coleslaw. It was interesting to say the least. We made fake mayo out of all kinds of random stuff - onion, green pepper, ginger, thyme, cashews, parsley, etc - and mixed it into cabbage and carrot shreds. I kind of liked it; OM didn't, but say it isn't too awful if you add ketchup. So, lessons I learned eating raw food: 1. Sprouting grains in bulk probably isn't a great idea. (For those who have sprouted before, please don't laugh too hard. I've never done it, and it still may work. But I won't do it again.) Sprouting involves soaking dry grains or beans and letting them germinate before eating. This is used a lot in raw food. "Bread" is made by sprouting grains, mashing them together, and dehydrating it. 2. Also, I scored a barely used Jack LaLane juicer on craigslist ($50!). Fresh orange juice really is better than the stuff you buy at the store. And, just because I like cold orange juice, it's a good idea to refridgerate your oranges before juicing to get the full effect. We're going to make apple juice for dinner. 3. Don't try to make raw veggies taste like cheeseburgers or french fries, etc. Chocolate pudding cannot be made out of avocado, maple syrup, and carob powder. But it's not half bad, especially cold and fluffy. We'll see if it turns into a decent ice cream replacement. Of course, I should know better, but I'm planning to make pseudo-pizza later in the week. We'll see how that turns out.
| Misson: MOVE... Accomplished?[Mood: Optimistic] Sorry for the break. Had to go pack up the apartment and move to another state. Silly moving, messin up my blogging... So, OM and I are back up and running in tha OKC! We managed to pack up the truck, drive here, and move everything in over the course of three days - in no small part, due to my parents, OM's dad and brother, many friends, and the OKC Was.es. You guys rock!!! Over all, the new place is pretty awesome. Yes, it's very high (more on that later). It's right around the corner from the main downtown bus station, and I've already picked up maps over all the routes, and figured out how to get to OU-HSC and the mall. We've found a SuperTarget, two Sam's Clubs, and three Wal-Marts thus far. Also, two coffee shops within walking distance, an amazing thai restaurant within 2 blocks, and (gasp!) the library and art museum a mere 3 blocks away! (I cannot stress enough the awesomeness that is the newfound thai restuarant. Let's just say that, for less than five bucks, I can have all the most-amazing-soup-I've-ever-had, and a drink!) Due to popular demand, I have taken photos of our new place, and will post them now for your viewing pleasure.
Firstly, because I'm lazy, I stole this photo from the apartment website. But this is our building, in the heart of downtown OKC: Just for referance, I got this photo from the Encyclopedia Britannica. Our building is the white one on the far left. I am not kidding. Pretty cool, huh? But wait! Check out the inside! This is the living room, as seen from the front door. Give me a break about the mess. We moved in 5 days ago. You should be proud of the progress. This is the kitchen. It's very nice - all new appliances - but pretty short on storage. Those cabinets you see? That's all of em. That is why Aunt K and Mommy commandeered two short bookcases from the office to facilitate unpacking on Saturday. Again, major props to them for actually getting my cooking stuff out of boxes and onto shelves. (Plus, Mommy packed most of it for me in SA - extra props.) And, of course, our most recent purchase... a new couch. I thought we would hold off on that for a few more weeks, but I hadn't really realized how essential couches are. And trust me, they are. So, OM and I went couch shopping Sunday. I think we got a pretty good one, considering the price (less than $600). It is hard to appreciate its full awesomeness, because I couldn't back up enough to get a complete picture, but there it is. Also of note: new lamp... which is plugged into a defective outlet. Of course, the tour wouldn't be complete without a photo of the view from our porch (you can see the porch doors from the living room photo.) Firstly, this is the view if you lean over the rail and look at the porch. Please ignore the sunbathers. I couldn't convince them to move (probably because they couldn't hear me.) And then, the view straight out from the porch. Is that not the greatest? Best I can tell, the white building is a federal office building. You can't tell from the photo, but it's shaped kind of like a grand piano. No kidding. To the far left, you can see St.Anthony's hospital, too. (That's your trivia for the day.) And that will conclude the tour for the day, kiddos. I've lost the cable to charge my camera in the move, so once the battery dies, that'll be all the photos for a while. ^_^
In other news, OM went to a temp agency on Monday, and they've sent his resume off for three jobs thus far. One was even for an HR department! He's been doing other job hunting as well, but that's the most exciting progress we've heard. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

| Because You Asked For It...[Mood: Sleepy] Oi vey. Sis had her school play today. It was quite cute - a 5th grade rendition of High School Musical. I'm actually amused enough that I may go rent it... not really. but seriously, it was at 8:00am. What kind of person (besides parents) get up at eight in the morning to see a bunch of kids put on a play in the cafeteria? Not many, that's for sure. But I went and did my sisterly duty. Now... laundry day!
But the important news of the day... Xangsta Party!!! That's right folks, the West Texas Xangstas are congregating yet again. This time, it won't be at a house, so we can totally trash the place with few repercussions. Place: Marble Slab Creamery. If you don't know where it is, you suck. Date: Tuesday, May 27 Time: What do you think? 6:30pm-ish? Dinner provided, assuming you provide cash. And by dinner, I totally mean ice cream. Why come? Well, we'll be there... And we're awesome. It'll give you a chance to say good-bye to us in public, before we move to OU and become mortal enemies. Date and time are negotiable, of course. But that's what would work best for OM and I. Lemme know if we need to change it up. Love ya!
