Life as a parent

Nathan's first book reading, at 3 days old

I know we've only been parents for just a couple of weeks, but it's been wonderful, rewarding, tiring, frustrating and painfull at various times.  Mostly it has been wonderful, but a screaming baby can make you think differently, particularly if it's 2 am in the morning or it's when you're going somewhere in the car and you can't pull over so you just have to listen to the pityful crying/screaming.  Nathan is actually quite a good sleeper at night, and we've only really had a couple of bad nights, but that's enough!  We are starting to get into a kind of rhythm now, of feeding, sleeping and playing....it's not exactly a routine, but I think we're getting to understand Nathan's needs a little better.

Breastfeeding is certainly a lot harder than I thought it would be.  I went to see a lactation consultant today because I wasn't sure if Nathan was feeding properly (we've had a few problems) and he hasn't put on much (if any) weight since leaving hospital 2 weeks ago.  It was a positive and reassuring meeting, and helped me to feel a bit more confident about what I'm doing.

Thursdays is also the day that there is a group meeting at the hospital for parents with babies up to 4 months of age.  This was my second meeting, and I am enjoying them...meeting other new parents and  being able to discuss anything that might be bothering us in a comfortable place with a friendly atmosphere is simply awesome.  They also have a lot of people come to give talks on certain subjects which is great.  So far these meetings on Thursdays are the hightlight of my week.

To have the ability to interconnect/network with others is blissful, since the downfall of the nuclear family such things are so greatly needed. Glad that things are working out for you all.

What a terrific pictures of the guys bonding, I bet Nathan loves the sound of daddy's heartbeat.  You should be getting a small package from us here in Germany, we hope you like it and find it brings you pleasure over the years.

I am so glad you are enjoying parenthood. The first 6 weeks of breastfeeding are the hardest. I can't see the picture at work so I will try again at home. I can hardly wait!

aaww! the picture is so cute! i think those kinds of meetings are good for you. you do need some support system, especially with people you have something in common with.

Your comments make me feel like I have stepped into the time machine and gone back to our first few weeks of parenthood. In fact I am sure you are finding that your description is probably the stereotypical first few weeks! (with some people having it a bit harder, we thought ourselves a bit lucky).
I guess breastfeeding is the ultimate meeting of novices. I am glad you were able to see a lactation consultant and be more reassured.
As you mention, the parents meetings are very good too.
Good luck in the next few weeks as you enjoy the wonders of parenthood

As a teacher of language and literacy I am thrilled to see that you are starting early. Such a good foundation for all that is to come. Hope the breast feeding goes well and that you get all the help that you need. All the very best to you.
cheers

Tash always decided she wanted to cry when I was on this one major roadway in the City and could not pull over. Trying to hand her a bottle or a pacifier while still driving is an interesting experience.
