IT AIN'T WORTH SHIT

Character.  What does it count for?

What does saying “no” get you?

What does standing up for your principles get you?

What does defending your values get you?

What does being a person full of character get you?

There is but one who cares.  In the deepest recesses of our heart, we may know in reality there is but one that matters.  Unfortunately, for those mighty, but tired strugglers out there, that is just not quite enough.

How do I answer my son?  How do I encourage the inconsolable?  How do I salve deep wounds?  How do I honor the dishonored?  How do I reconcile injustice?  How do I continue to regurgitate the old “your reward is in heaven” line?  How do I continue to withhold my complete disdain for parents, teachers, and coaches who do not enforce or reward value, virtue, and character?

I am so angry at an entire world that continuously downplays

…the virtue of virtue,

…the value of value

…the character of character

…the righteousness of righteousness

Politicians prove to me everyday, character doesn’t matter.

Religious leaders prove to me everyday, spirit doesn’t matter.

Society proves to me everyday, standards don’t matter.

Educators prove to me everyday, integrity doesn’t matter.

Parents prove to me everyday, limits don’t matter.

Don’t do it.

Really.  Why Not?

Answer me!

Really, WHY NOT?!?!

Truly, everyone really DOES do it?  Why not?

In a world full of demands for reward…

            …work

            …movies

            …music

            …charity

What is the worth of the reward for character?

            …for nobility?

            …for chivalry?

            …for morality?

            …for Christianity?

Not what is the reward itself, but rather, what is it worth?

Unfortunately, it ain’t worth shit.

So, Cyko .. does this mean you're tossin' in the towel?

I didn't think so.  Tilting at windmills is a noble way to spend a life.

Modern version of Ecclesiastes...know what I mean?  The greatest thing is to enjoy your food, drink and spouse.  Not necessarily in that order, but whatever works.

Jerry I had to read this about 3 times. Here my meager thoughts...

1st & 2nd paragraph... my thought is when we stand on those we feel good in our heart instead of dreadful. In the recesses of my heart even though tired and not so mighty... it is enough.

3rd paragraph. We do the best we can. What an awesome thing to in our smallness to be used by God when our humaness isnt enough and The Spirit takes over. We can never be enough.. But God is and isnt that why he is God Job? He does get all the glory right? note:There were a lot of "I" in this paragraph.... (wait till the fire has died and there just dosent seem to be any spark at all, then I can tell you that you would shout to the heavens for God to use you...ask me I know)

4th paragraph... this is why we are here isnt it. Love

Skip to the last sentence... what is it worth... it is priceless.

I enjoyed your rant ....I agree, you do it very well!!    To answer a question you posed "How do I answer my son?" I had the opportunity this week and I believe spoke into my sons life....and it was about character. I shared what I once read--Strive to build a strong character for use in facing the world's realities. It might be thought or given the impression that character is what others think about us. But the opinion others have about us is not important. Character is what we are, not what others think we are. We are not born with character. It is developed through patience and much humility. It is what we are in the dark. Our character is revealed by an outer show of an inner glow. It is our reserve force for living. It is more useful than talent and shows itself best during our contact with others. So I encouraged him to remember his character can be a force that respects truth, develops will and spirit, accents positive action, and makes all of these assets evident to other people. Life changing for him to reflect on character......there is hope.....I have seen it is worth it ..... bringing a young man out of the depths of darkness and gloom.....hang in there baby!

RYC:  Jerry, ironically the building I walked into to be drafted was damaged significantly by the bombing.  I am sure I would have been moved the stories.  In 2002, Mac (he was drafted the same day as I was) and I walked through the bombing memorial.  OKC erected a somber and respectable monument to those who died.

RYC ... on Tahoe.  I can snuggle with my lovely bride on the couch in front of the fireplace ... and I expect to (someday) get a chance to see that fictional lake house.

Oh, and Horseshoe Bay is wonderful ... one of the finest places in Texas.  I'd love to come visit (many times) ...but it ain't Tahoe (you'll have to come visit there)
