SUMMER PROGRAM ACTIVITIES!!!!

Video Project
The video project documents oral histories from Asian American youth and families in the Detroit area.  We will focus on Asian American experiences as part of historical multiethnic and multiracial residential communities who live in Detroit and have experienced the many economic and social changes our city has undergone.  There are very few media forms of education that discuss the experiences and issues found within Asian American communities.  And there are even fewer sources that cover these experiences specifically within the Hmong neighborhoods in the Detroit and Warren areas.  Our project builds a space for Hmong youth to reflect upon their own experiences within the historical context of Hmong migration and settlement.  The video project will also provide a space for our organization to contribute to the educational needs within the overall Asian American community.  Youth participants will interview themselves, their families, and community members.  Mentors will provide trainings and guidance related to interview skills and video editing.  Our actual final product will be an educational video that our group hopes to distribute to other multiracial and multiethnic youth programs and organizations.

Popular Education Workshops
In addition to the primary video project, youth participants will also spend their time in political education workshops.  This series of workshops will focus on Asian American history, contemporary Asian American politics, and the history of communities of color in Detroit.  We will provide a space for youth participants to learn and dialogue about the histories and contemporary issues that impact their lives.  Such topics also pair well with the interview content for the video project.

Community Event to Discuss Chonburi Xiong and Police Brutality
This event is still forming and DAY project mentors, youth, co-coordinators, and advisors will work with the larger “Ad-Hoc Community to Support the Xiong Family.”  The event will take place on July 13th with the sponsorship and support of Hmong community activist Tou Ger Xiong.

Road Trip to the Hmong Arts and Culture Festival
In August we will take a two-three day road trip to the Hmong Arts and Culture Festival in Minnesota.  The festival is a fun and education opportunity for DAY Project to distribute our video, explore what other Hmong youth are working on, and meet other Hmong people from across the nation.

Hi DAY Project,

This is Paula Moua.  I was at school and I decided to use Detroit's Chinatown as the topic of one of my speeches.  Surprisingly, Wayne State has a group calleed Friends of Detroit Chinatown.  Chelsea, who is Director and student, told me some interesting things.  What really got my attention was that she has been trying to contact DAY Project since it was you guys who put the mural up in Chinatown.  she sent me an apporved proposal of an exhibit for Chinatown in the Detroit Historical Museum (2009) and she would like your help.  I happen to know a few members of DAY Project and I told her that I would try to get a hold or at least spread the word out for you guys.

If you'd like to look at the proposal shoot an email to me at paula_muas@yahoo.com and I will gladly forward it to you guys.  I did not send the proposal to you guys just in case you guys didn't get my comment. Sorry! Just a procaution.  If you don't know who I am, am was a former classmate of Dia Shia Yang and Mai Chou Lor and I also Chong Lor.

Looking forward to your emails,

Paula
