| | Criminal Minds - Random thingsMethinks someone on the CM board is a huge CSI fan as well. Generally negative predictions based on spoilers are going on, and someone used CSI as an example of a show that went downhill due to a similar plot (well, similar feel). Well, the CSI fan jumped in and said if any show has gone down in quality it's CM (and if they feel that way, it's certainly their prerogative to think so). But, the thing that got me is that they hope the show gets canceled just for the person who said they felt the quality of CSI had gone down. Now, I've never felt that you shouldn't wish for a show to end because other people like it. Unless you have superpowers or pull with the networks, your wishing won't make a bit of difference. And, tv watching is essentially a selfish pastime. If I hate a story development, I'm going to wish it doesn't happen, no matter how many other people would be happy for it. Or, if I like a couple, I'm going to want them to stay together no matter who hates them. It's the whole, "just for you" specifically wanting a show to get canceled for someone who wants the show to stay on and is simply worried about the potential quality. The whole wanting something to spite someone. Even though my wants have to make some portion of the audience unhappy if they come true (since we don't all think alike) I've never wanted something purposely to make them unhappy. All I got was, "I like CSI, you're saying mean things about it, you need to be punished!"
This might come down to the same issue I have with glamorizing violence (again, no glitz, no glamor) but the idea that they brought JJ in for the sexy factor doesn't wash with me. When have they tried to make JJ sexy? Not that they've ever dowdified her, but she's been treated as a professional agent. And, I doubt the FBI vest fetish is so common that the writers of the show would put JJ in the field with the intent of getting her in one so the guys could have someone hot to look at. (Besides, they had Elle). So, even if JJ in real life wouldn't be considered a field agent in real life (and I've heard conflicting reports) I can think of better reasons for having her be one within the context of the show than the sex factor. Using her more, opening more potential storylines, allowing her to interact with the other characters more - especially in the more action oriented episodes.
