Criminal Minds - Reid stuff

So, the queen of the "Reid needs a papa, poor baby" society feels that Reid was closest to Gideon.  Okay.  I can see how that argument can be made.  But, then, she says that Reid won't ever be as close to anyone else.  So, why is she pushing for Rossi to become Reid's new surrogate daddy?  You'd think the best solution is for Reid to stand on his own two feet if anyone else would clearly be second best.

And, I admit I do get personally miffed when someone appears to disparage the beautiful scene where Reid "chooses" Hotch to die.  She made it seem as if choosing Hotch had nothing to do with Reid having trust and faith that Hotch would pick up a very difficult clue, but that it was a matter of convenience because they had discussed classic narcissism before.  Except, there's a lot of trust in putting your trust (tried to think of a way to say this without repeating the word "trust") in someone's memory of one conversation.  And, in a conversation that he could easily have forgotten, since right afterwards, they were taken hostage and had to get themselves out of a deadly situation.  And, yes, the conversation played a part in why Reid picked him, but this poster seems to imply that if hadn't been for that, Hotch would have been the last person Reid would have picked.  Because it took him three clicks of the gun to come up with the plan.  Now, this is someone else's interpretation of the scene, so I won't use it as proof, but they feel that Reid had the plan right away, and could see that there was no bullet in the chamber during the first three pulls of the trigger and only chose to reveal his plan when the bullet was there.  But, either way, when push comes to shove, Reid didn't choose anyone else.  He chose Hotch.  Also, the whole conversation thing?  Gideon was supposed to be a legendary profiler.  Does this person seriously think that without one specific conversation to recall, Gideon couldn't have picked up a clue where Reid chooses him to die and then names a trait he doesn't have as the reason why?  So, I think him choosing Hotch said, in that moment, he trusted Hotch to pick up on the clue better than anyone else, and not that he had no choice in the matter.

There are a number of episodes that showcase the trust and closeness of Reid and Gideon (and a number that don't).  Lets not put down one of the episodes that show the closeness between Reid and Hotch.

Ugh.  And, now she says that Reid picked Hotch because he was more willing for Hotch to be in danger, but because he was so close to Gideon that he wouldn't harm a hair on his chinny chin chin.  Um, first, Hotch wasn't in any danger.  Reid was counting on Hotch to get the clue to find him, rescue him, and bring Tobias down.  But, on the off chance that there would be some showdown between Hotch and Tobias, well, they all knew that Tobias would think Hotch was his target, they knew what he looked like, Hotch was surrounded by 4 trained FBI agents who would be alert and ready to take Tobias down, and Hotch himself is a marksman, who wasn't going to just stand there going, "duh, he wants to kill me, what do I dooooo????"  So, the logic doesn't pan out.  But, even worse, is the feeling that Reid anywhere in his mind could be thinking, "I'll pick someone other than Gideon because I'm not as close to them as I am to him, and thus am more willing to put them in danger."  That doesn't make me think, "oh, it's so sweet how much Reid wants to protect Gideon."  It makes me think, "Reid's a nasty little piece of work whose heart is obviously so small that he can only think to protect the person he's closest to. "  It's the same problem I had with the Jack/Sam shippers from Stargate, who implied that because (according to them) Jack loved Sam, he would make sure she wasn't hurt, but he didn't care about Daniel or Teal'c as much so, although in a perfect world, he'd make sure none of them were ever hurt, he'd be just that much more willing for them to kick the bucket if it meant Sam was safe.  Uh, no.  You can imply extreme closeness between two people without needing to show that another character is more expendable because they're not as close.  That's cold and callous and just plain nasty.

Also, I seriously doubt the writers wanted us to take away from that scene that Reid isn't quite as close to Hotch.  First, Gideon wasn't even an important part of that scene, so there was no comparison being made.  Also, how can anyone watch any scenes with Reid and Hotch and enjoy them if a scene where Reid chooses Hotch to die didn't have some other meaning?  Feeling Hotch is more expendable than Gideon (or than Morgan or Prentiss, who were also profilers and who you could argue might have been able to pick up a clue like that) would put a bad taste in people's mouths (well mine, anyway) any time they ever had a scene together after that.
