Oh my god it was soo much fun. The first night we got there our DI's (who were AROTC cadets) got on the bus and started yellin and screamin at us like it was basic training lol.

We did all kinds of different training but my favourite had to be the tactical training. We marched in formations like the Army and learned how to engage enemies and stuff like that. We sang cadences did PT and marched all together and I got to get to know people alot better.

I have to say I like my Army unit much more than my old Navy unit. Not to mention the uniform this weekend was Battle Dress Uniform also known as BDU's. Things are great now and I cant wait for school on tuesday

HOOAH
Joey

Does public expression of opinion foster the democratic Ideal of free speech? Often, the public is subjected to a so-called “expert opinion” or told a half truth at best. However, there comes that rare moment every now and again when something is said that truly causes the public to stop and think on the subject that is being discussed. With a kind of revolution taking place in the way that the American public, and the rest of the world for that matter, gets its information; the line between a worthwhile opinion and the advancement of a personal agenda is very difficult to decipher. While opinions can sometimes be considered as malefic or reliable, it is important to note that it is the democratic ideal of free speech that is nurtured in allowing for people to openly speak their minds.

The forefathers of the United States sought out to be sure that every American citizen would have the right to speak their minds freely. Thus, albeit after some persuasion, the First Amendment was written. This right is exercised every day by the many politicians, actors and laypeople that use various types of mediums to express their opinions everyday. Using new mediums such as the internet and online journals, it has been made possible for any American citizen to express his opinion. Therefore, the democratic idea of freedom of the speech and freedom of the press is put into use. Macasieb 2

An important factor to consider is that in the United States, as compared to some European countries, there is little no grey area in political thought. The country is either-or in the area of social and political views. This is represented by the Congress of the United States which currently is dominated by the conservative Republican party and the liberal Democratic party. Because the officials elected are supposed to represent the views of the American people, it is extremely clear that, here in the United States, lines are drawn between political extremes leaving very little room for moderate thought.

An increasingly popular form of accessing the opinions of many people is the internet. Popular sites that have recently been put to wide usage are online journals called “Web Blogs”. These sites are more often than not run by every day citizens. Nothing fosters the ideal of freedom of speech more than these mediums. Using the online journal, authors express their opinions on a wide range of subjects such as war to discussing the actions of the President and other politicians. This shows the value of free speech when in other countries, such as Iran or the former Iraq, speaking against the government could get a person killed. While one may not agree with what is said on the internet journals, it is important to note the bias of the author. Since the journal is written by an everyday citizen, it is bound to have a slant in one direction or another. Therefore, nothing said can be taken at face value or used to assume that if the author is associated with some kind of group, such as a church, that their opinions are reflective of the larger number.

Talk shows on both the radio and cable news channels are another medium through which fact is often interwoven with opinion. While there is actual news presented thus allowing the viewer or listener to deduce their own thoughts, a person can often find

Macasieb 3

himself wading through opinion to get at core fact. News casters such as Bill O’ Reilly

and Rush Limbaugh will often begin by presenting news, but interjecting with a - in the specific case of these two particular casters-- conservative slant. On the other side, however, there are casters who add a liberal slant to the news such as caster Bill Handel. The fact that there is the variety of news stations and casters to select from shows once again that a basic freedom is being fostered and is flourishing.

Opinions that are also coming to the forefront are that of musicians. Music artists are writing lyrics that, while possibly indirectly, influence American teens to speak out on issues they believe in. When iconic punk rock group Green Day released their album “American Idiot” in September of two thousand four, the public took notice. Politically charged songs like “Holiday” and “American Idiot” expressed anti war sentiments and commented on the slanted American media. Preceding the aforementioned was pop rock group U-2. These particular artists wrote songs about religious persecution in their home country of Ireland and called for an end to violence. One of the most outspoken and prominent bands, however, is heavy metal group System of a Down. With their members Armenian in heritage, the group has crusaded to get world governments to recognize the Armenian genocide in World War I. Their lyrics have also challenged political order and in their 2005 album “Mezmerize”, they too challenged the current Iraq conflict in their song “BYOB”.

It is a fact that only two hundred years ago, this radical idea of allowing the people to speak their minds came out of the enlightenment and was adopted by revolutionaries

Macasieb 4

seeking to form a new union that was created by and intended to be run by the people. However, today more than ever their idea is put into use. People have the freedom to use various mediums such as the internet to express their thoughts on the major issues confronting the country. The nation was founded by men who sought to create a country which did not restrict a person’s freedom to speak their mind. Their vision is realised more so today with the new technology and innovations in media, than ever before.

This is a work I am very proud of. As you can see, I wrote this for my AP English class. Feedback on the essay is appreciated because it is a work in progress. Happy 2007 everyone

Joey

My Life: A Beautiful Disaster

So despite the livid and contemptuous tone of my preceeding blog entry,(for entry in question see Myspace.com/theshiningone) something has recently happened that has triggered some thought to occer in my chaotic labyrinth of a mind.

I was returning from church last night with my oldest sister Joy when, among the several crises discussed, we started talking about the recent events that have transpired in my life. I was telling her how I have been preoccupied with vengeance and hate and how my thoughts have been on how and when the gods will punish those who have wronged me. Even though I make it a habit of not listening to my sister when she gets all philisophical on me (cause she's a pentacostal christian), she did say something that made a tad bit of sense.

She was telling me how feelings of contempt and hate can destroy a person from the inside. How those who wronged us may never offer an appology or admit they were wrong. Instead we have to let go and forgive. She said she knows this subject from experiece which almost totally shocked me to all hell. She spoke of how being preoccupied with such thoughts can wear the lining of a persons soul and essentially consume him (not in so many words seeing as how I'm a tad more articulate than she is).

So how do I let go? I have tried numoerous times to just let go of everything that has happened. Its so difficult to forgive and forget. Especially since I feel like I have had my entire life robbed from me; two years worth of construction of a carrer taken in the span of two weeks. I want to forgive but I need some sort of guidence. So comes my plea for advice. I need help letting go. I need assistance in looking away and saying I forgive you. I need a nudge in the right direction so I dont have to feel like Dante the angel of vengeance but just The Angel Dante.

So in other news, yesterday I asked out this guy that I've been hanging out with since the summer............................................................................................................................ and he said yes.

Happy 2007 everyone
<3 Joey

LHS Transfer, NJROTC and life

Hey everyone

Well life the past few weeks has been rather complicated. My former best friend has been making my life at WCHS rather hellish of late. But the purpose of this entry is in no way, shape and/or form to focus on the negative but rather to fill everyone in on the positive turn that things are taking.

My mom, myself and Mrs Brown, the co-Prinipal of WCHS, sat down and had a meeting on thursday after school. It looks like that I am getting the transfer that I wanted. So I will be leaving WCHS as soon as everything is taken care of.

Which brings us to the steaming question, Am I going to rejoin NJROTC? The answer to that question is YOU BET YOUR ASS I AM! I am going to begin a new career with my two new instructors that kick ass MACM and Lt. I hope that I can work hard enough to please the both of them.

Alas though, there is one final matter I must discuss. I have been having some unexpected feelings for a guy. The problem is that I know that he is straight. I dont know how any of this came about but it just kind of happened. I keep telling myself that it can never work or happen for that matter and to just not trouble myself with it. I would truley hate to destroy this friendship over this little crush. So now I ask for advice, What should I do?

Well thats all from me. I'll post another update in the near future. Laterz all and have a great weekend

Dante

Lakewood's Homecoming

So last night I accompanied my BFF (best friend forever for those of you who dont know that abreiviation) to Lakewood High's homecoming game. It was a lot of fun and SO MUCH BETTER production wise than WCHS's homecoming.

So I spent the whole time chilling with Lakewoods NJROTC unit cause my buddy in an O-4 and the CG commander. Well needless to say I have a lot of ppl I know in Lakewood's ROTC cause Lakewood and Wilson are kinda tight like that.

So I was talking to Beltran, the CO over at Lakewood, and she was like "so I heard you quit ROTC" and I told her exactally what happened and she said "well that sucks, maybe you should transefer here at the semester and join us."

Now I didnt think anything of it at the time I just kinda laughed it off but then I started thinking during the game. What do I really have left at WCHS? I mean, I'm not in choir anymore and I cant get in because of my god impossible schedual. I quit ROTC which was the only life blood that I had at school. So maybe I should put in a transfer. I mean my best friend is at LHS, I might be able to get back into NJROTC with my rate and awards intact. I dont know I'm probably going to start working on it. So now I think I'm going to leave you all with the question of the day.

Can fallen angels return to heaven or must the eternally wander the barren wasteland of hell?

Thursday, September 28, 2006

Dear students of Woodrow Wilson Classical High School,

Did you know that for some reason it is illegal for gay men to donate blood in a blood drive? I am here to tell you that it is a fact. Gay men are not allowed to give blood because of a "higher" risk of the HIV virus. However, I would like to poke some holes in thier rationale.

1) HIV is not a "gay disease". In fact heterosexuals who are HIV positive have contracted it through unprotected sexual intercourse as well as gay men.

2) The blood that is drawn is tested for HIV and STD's. Therefore, they can catch diseases before the blood is used in a transfusion.
We learned our lesson in the 80's when dirty transfusions contributed to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

It is because of this that I am sending a rallying cry to all those of you that will not let this legalised homophobia stand. I am calling all who believe in equality and justice to boycott tomarrow's blood drive. If you have already had the paper work filled out, just dont go. I urge you to voice your disgust for laws that contribute to the hate that exists in our country. Fight homophobia and together we can send a message to the government, unjust laws like this cannot and will not stand.

Sincearly,
J. J. M.

Dane woke that morning sleeping next to a man he barely knew. For all Dane cared, it didn’t matter who the guy was just that he had had sex with him the night before. Fuck love Dane thought to himself. He had one philosophy, sex was all that mattered and if he ever fell in love he should be committed. The music of Sodom and Gomorrah, the local gay club, was still ringing in his ears. His head pounded from drinking in surplus the night before. Dane was the hottest young thing at Sodom and Gomorrah, not eighteen six foot one and a reddish blond haired grey eyed stud. Not to mention Dane always left with another guy every time he had been to the club.

The heat of the late August morning began to become more and more evident to Dane as he got up and began to put his clothes from the night before back on. The man sleeping next to Dane woke. He was not unattractive himself. Dane had had his eye on this catch his whole night at the club. So when the man invited him over for “a little fun”, Dane was more than happy to oblige.

“Hey hot stuff” the man said “Leavin so early don’t wanna go at it again?” The man rolled over exposing his nude body to Dane.

“Sorry” Dane said “But I don’t fuck leftovers.” Dane picked up his things and walked out of the mans apartment but not without saying “Later Mitchell” as apathetic as was humanly possible.

“That’s Michael douche bag!” the man screamed but Dane had already slammed the apartment door and began to head for his car.

As soon as he reached his car he picked up his cell phone and dialled his best friends phone number.

“Hello?” came a girls voice on the other end.

“Quoth the fucking raven nevermore.” Dane said into his phone. He enjoyed spewing various random remarks at her.

“Dane, you almost got caught this time fuck nut. Your mom called me twice looking for you and the bathroom excuse only held up so well. I’m almost done covering for you.” She said

“Good morning to you too Alicia. Has somebody started their rag or what.” Dane said

“ Dane, I’m fucking serious. You realise that if you get caught you go down and I go down with you? Ugh why do I even bother.” Said Alicia

“ Because I’m your favourite fag and you love me dearly.” Dane said in response to Alicia. “Anyway, I’m heading home now with the hangover of a century if it means anything to you so I just thought I’d let you know that if my whore of a mother calls again you can tell her that I’m on my way back to my hell hole.”

“Fine.” Said Alicia “Dane did you have sex with another random guy?” Alicia asked him.

“Is the pope catholic?” Dane said in response

“DANE YOU STUPID FUCKING MORON DID YOU AT LEAST USE A RUBBER?” She said clearly annoyed

“ What part of hangover of the century do you not understand? I cant even remember if they played any of my favs last night.” Dane said with absolutely no feeling in his voice whatsoever.

“Dane, if you get sick then well that would be one fuck of a way to come out to your parents ‘mom I’m a homo who indiscriminately fucks other guys and I have HIV from it’.”

“Its not gunna happen Alicia. Besides for all I know we did so if you’re done acting like my mother I think I’ll talk to you later ok.” Dane said irritated

“Fine. Laters Dane. And please just think of those who love you for once in your life.”

She hung up before Dane could scold her for using the vile ‘L’ word. Dane pulled up to house in Naples and parked his car. His waterfront house where he had grown up his whole life stood there like a subtle reminder of who he was supposed to be, the rich little straight boy. The August sun still crept higher into the air as he unlocked the door and stepped into his house. Great, time to act like some prissy heterosexual again he thought to himself.

Dane climbed the stairs to his bedroom but not before his mother stepped out of hers. Shit Dane thought.

“Well good morning Dane did you have a good time at Alicia’s house. Why didn’t you call me when I called you?”

“Slipped my mind mother.” Dane said with a slight snarl.

“Is that right? Well, Dane your father called to say that he wont be home in time to see you off for that trip to Catalina this weekend and he would like you to call him soon. Oh and Dane make sure you are packed and ready to leave tomorrow.” She said and she walked downstairs

Dane was a little upset that his father would not be there to see him off, partially because that meant it would be his mother that took him to the dock. Dane’s only loyalty was to his father. At the end of Junior year he had discovered that his mother was having an affair with the resident at the hospital she worked at. He only had no proof but from that point on, he decided that he was only his father’s son and nothing would take that away from him. Dane’s sexual orientation was included when he said nothing. He went into his room and threw his backpack down on the floor. He took out his cell phone and dialled his fathers number.

The phone rang until he got “You’ve reached Colonel Steiner I am unable to come to my phone right now but if you leave your name number and a message I will get back to you as soon as I can.”

“Dad, its me. Um I figure you’re in a staff meeting or something right now but anyway just call me back when you get the chance bye.” Danes father was a Marine JAG down in Pendleton and only occasionally got leave to come home to see Dane and his mother. In the mean time Dane was stuck with his mother with Alicia being his only solace from hating her with a passion

Dane laid on his bed sprawled out. His Marine Corps poster on the wall directly across from him. The Marine in the foreground turned him on and he often got off looking at that poster. He turned over onto his stomach and thought about what Alicia said. Perhaps he shouldn’t throw all inhibitions to the wind every time he went to Sodom and Gomorrah. He got up and decided to shower and change his clothes. He couldn’t risk his father finding out that he liked other guys. Dane was going to be a Marine officer just like his father. Maybe not a lawyer but still a Marine. And the natural order of things were that Marines weren’t attracted to other guys.

As soon as he stepped out of the bathroom he heard his phone ring. The ring tone being the Marine Corps hymn it could only be one person, his father.

“Hey Dad.” Dane said answering his phone.

“Dane, how are you doing son?” Came his fathers voice. It was the most refreshing sound to him having been stuck with his mother for the past six weeks.

“I’m doing great dad. How are things down on base?” He said to his father

“Great! Listen, I just got assigned a big case so I wont be able to take you to the dock to go to Catalina tomorrow but when you get back you can come stay with me on base until school starts.”

That was as though it were a god send to Dane. He loved staying down in his fathers quarters at Pendleton. He knew all of the staff his father worked with and they all knew him. Plus when it was just him and his father, they always had the most fun.

“That would be kick ass dad.” Dane said to his father. He and his father did their catching up and then he had to go so Dane said good bye and hung up the phone. His dad would pick him up from the dock on Sunday and then they would get Dane some supplies before heading down to Pendleton.

Dane walked downstairs to find his mother in her scrubs grabbing her car keys. Dane entered the kitchen where she was and started making himself a sandwich.

“ I have an early shift so I’ll be home around eight tonight, dear.” She said “Dane, my resident has invited us for dinner tonight at Sushi of Naples should I tell him we’re going?”

Dane wanted to strangle his mother at that point. Not only was she cheating on his father with the man but she wanted Dane to go out on a date with her. He instantly became livid but instead of saying no he nodded. If this was how his mother wanted to play, Dane could play too.

“Ok, Honey just be ready at seven forty-five and I’ll pick you up at about eight or so.” she turned and walked out the door.

He took his sandwich up to his room and immediately phoned Alicia.

“Babe remember when I told you I caught my mother and her resident making out here at the house?”

“Yea. What about it?” Alicia said

“Well I’ll put it this way, if you thought cheating on my dad while he was in Iraq is fucked up shit then you wont believe this. She wants me to go with her and him to dinner tonight.”

Silence.

“Alicia are you still there?” Dane finally said

“Dane you aren’t actually going to go are you?” Alicia said

“That’s the thing I am. What she doesn’t know is that my dad is going to pick me up from the dock on Sunday and I’m going to stay with him in Pendleton. So should that bitch pull anything this weekend my dad will find out. I realise how utterly sadistic and petty that sounds but Alicia my dad deserves better than this and I just don’t have the heart to tell him that his wife of twenty five years is fucking another man.”

“Just be careful Dane. If it looks like your dad doesn’t have the emotional strength for this abort mission Marine.” she said the last part jokingly.

“Yeah, I’ll be sure to Alicia. If things go bad though and it comes to a decision, I’d move away with my dad in an instant you know that right?” said Dane.

“I know Dane. I just don’t think I can imagine senior year without my favourite fag with me twenty four seven.”

Dane laughed “Alright point taken. I’m gunna get packed for the trip and I’ll be sure to debrief you on dinner later tonight. Laters babe and muah.”

“Laters Dane and muah.” Alicia hung up the phone.

Dane began packing all his clothes that he planned to take with him on the trip. Alicia was the only person that he knew on the whole roster of people going. Well her and his Marine Biology teacher Professor Anderson. But the Professor hardly counts Dane thought. Dane put all his things in his suitcase and ran the list over and over in his mind. Once he was finally sure he had everything, he laid down on his bed and slowly drifted into sleep.

Dane woke to the sound of his phone ringing. It was the Marine Corps hymn which slightly startled Dane at first.

“Dad?” said Dane groggily

“Hey there son. What would you say if I told you I was making a right onto our street at this very moment?” Dane’s father said

“I would tell you to stop fucking with me cause it isn’t funny.” Dane said with absolutely no thought.

“Ha ha, any other time you’d be right Dane and I would be messing with you but this time look out your bedroom window.”

Dane went to his window hastily. Sure enough his fathers black Suburban was pulling into the driveway. Dane hung up his phone in a hurry. He quickly ran down stairs, swearing when he stubbed his toe, and flung open the door. Colonel Michael Steiner was grabbing his bags out of his car. Dane ran up to his father and gave him a hug. The Colonel was still in uniform which showed a good many of his accomplishments in the Marine Corps. Twenty ribbons above the left pocket, including the Defence Distinguished Service award, a testament to his dedication to the Marines.

Dane was the first to speak. “Dad I thought you had a big case to work on.” Dane said still ecstatic about seeing his father.

“Defendant just plead guilty at his arraignment this afternoon so my job is done for a little while. So General Martinez thought he would send me home for the whole weekend. Dane, what’s say you and I go out for dinner tonight?” his father said.

“I would love to. Uh except I kinda told mom I’d go with her and a friend of hers to Sushi of Naples tonight. But I’m sure she wouldn’t mind if I went with you since we rarely get the chance to hang out together just father and son.”

Dane helped his father carry some of his things into the house. He then called his mother and told her that he would be out with his father instead of her. She reluctantly agreed and said she would be home late but if Dane and his father would be out late to call her and let her know.

Dane ran upstairs and put on some nicer clothes. He wore Jeans and one of his favourite blue striped polo shirts. He came back downstairs to find his dad still in uniform. This didn’t surprise him as his father often went out in uniform.

“All set?” his father asked. “Okay lets go.” He grabbed his car keys and Dane went off with his father.

Something was on Danes mind though. Should he or should he not come out to his father tonight? He knew he could tell his father anything, he had made that clear, but could he handle something like this. Tonight is the night. Dane decided.

Dane and his father arrived at their favourite burger place on second street and got out of the car. They walked in and both ordered their usual which was the same thing. The bacon avocado burger with extra bacon. His father ordered a beer and Dane had a cola, just the way they used to do when Dane was a little kid. Midway through dinner, Dane decided it was now or never.

“Dad, remember when I started high school and you said that I could tell you anything and you would be there for me no matter what?” Dane started.

“Of course son. What is it? You didn’t get anyone pregnant did you?” said his father laughing but Dane’s grave expression caused his father to slightly panic. “Oh my fucking god you didn’t.”

“No nothing like that dad but, well, dad I want you to know that it is never my intention to hurt you or mom but I think, no, I know that well I’m Gay.” Dane’s heart began to pound like a snare drum. His father sat across from him expressionless. Dane full on expected his father to disown him, to tell him that he was disgusting but instead he just smiled.

“Oh that’s it. Well I hate to disappoint you son but I already know.” he said

Dane was stunned. He tried to open his mouth to say something but no words would come out.

“Last July when you were at Pendleton, you got really close to Corporal Johnson and well in October of that year he was charged with homosexual acts and I was to defend. He admitted to me in private of the instance in his quarters involving you.”

Dane turned bright red. Not only was his father already aware of his sexual orientation, but he even knew about some of his sex life. What’s worse is he knew about those two hours with Corporal Johnson.

“Dane I want you to know that regardless of anything you are my son and I will love you no matter what. Your mother on the other hand may not take this so well so what’s say we keep this just between us men?” he said.

Dane nodded his head in agreement. Still incredulous of how things were going.

Dane and his father left the restaurant in silence. Dane got into the car still puzzling things out. Why hadn’t his father said anything if he knew? Dane had racked himself with questions until his father finally broke the silence.

“Dane, is the corporal the only other man you’ve been with?” he asked. A sense of gravity that Dane had never heard before was now in his fathers voice.

“No” Dane said simply. “I’ve been with other guys too. But Kirk was the only guy that I kept in contact with. We actually had a relationship that summer and for a while afterward.”

“Do you always use condoms?” said his father with a strange look on his face.

“With Kirk, yes he always insisted that we….”

His father interrupted “I mean in general. Dane do you always use protection?” Colonel Steiner was clearly frustrated now.

Dane really didn’t know how to answer his fathers question. He hadn’t always used protection. Would his father react like Alicia? Dane really feared his fathers reaction but answered his question nonetheless.

“No dad.” he said

His father brought the car to an abrupt stop. He closed his eyes and tears appeared. Then, he began to shake in silent anger.

“Dane, your sexual orientation is none of my fucking business but when you do something so stupid and dangerous it is my FUCKING BUSINESS.” he said.

Dane had only heard his father swear on a few occasions. All of which were in Pendleton and the one time he was angry he had really given it to an enlisted man for a serious issue.

“Do you not realise that if you get sick Dane its going to be me who has to take care of you? That its going to be me who has to watch his son die. I want you to swear to me now that you will only have safe sex.”

“Dad, I promise I will.” Dane said with his full heart. His father hugged him and then resumed driving. Much of the rest of the ride was in silence but Dane felt better. His greatest secret was finally off his chest and he could breathe again.

The moon had an eerie red colour to it. The way it shown on the sea in the harbour though made the waters appear just as beautiful as always. Danes father pulled into the driveway of their house. Danes’ mothers car was in the lot along with a silver one parked out front. Dane knew exactly what was going on. So the harlot is finally going to get caught. Dane thought to himself.

I starting writing this when I got back from Catalina Island in february. Here's something to hold you all over so I can get memoirs ready again. Hope you all enjoy.
