The Covenant:
WARNING: If you read this, and you haven't seen the movie, this will spoil some of the highlights for you. If you don't want that to happen, stop reading now!
This movie is action packed, and at times, alittle creepy. All-in-all, the Covenant was very well made. The dialog, action scenes, and even the small, almost pointless scenes are full of good acting. Even though the villain is, at times, over-the-top, it still isn't enough to weigh this movie down.
This movie follows the lives of the 4 "Sons of Ipswich" and the abilities that they have inherited. In the past, about the 17th century, 5 families started Ipswich. Each of the families had the powers to do about anything they wanted. At age 13, the descendants would get a taste of that power. At age 18, the descendants would "ascend". Ascending being the point when their powers became fully formed, utterly multiplying in strength. This ability, though very powerful, is also addictive, meaning the more you use it the more you want to use it again, like cocaine, or other drugs. However, there is a price to ultimate power. The more you use it, the more it saps away at your life. The families were Danvers, Collins, Perry, Garwin, and Sims. Soon, one of the families got so addicted to the power that they became power hungry, breaking the pact that was formed when the families joined to create Ipswich. After that, the family, Collins, was banished and, presumably died out. Now, descendants from the 4 remaining families are best friends at the prestigious Spencer college. Of the 4, Caleb Danvers (Stephen Strait) is 3 days away from turning 18, thus ascending. The others are Pogue Perry (Taylor Kitsch), Reid Garwin (Toby Hemmingway), and Tyler Sims (Chase Crawford). Caleb is the most responsible of the group. Pogue is alot like Caleb, but he is driven by his emotion. Tyler is playful, but still has a level head, knowing not to cross Caleb. Reid, on the other hand, is too playful, using his power to do meaningless tasks and pull childish pranks. They all go to a party, jumping off a cliff to get there. However, they get there just in time for the cops to show up. The 4 take off in a hummer, after Reid uses his power to fix a car being driven by Sarah Wenham (Laura Ramsey), to escape a cop car that is chasing them. In the hummer, they use the power to drive straight off a cliff, as if there was a road. In the fog, the cops stop just short of the edge, sure that the boys drove off to their doom. The hummer, instead, plops down behind the the car, screeching off into the night, leaving the cops stunned. After, the boys split, Pogue walking Kate Tunney (Jessica Lucas), his girlfriend, and Sarah, accompanied by Chase (Sebastion Stan), to their dorm room. Meanwhile, the cops find a car in the woods, along with a dead man in the driver's seat. The next day, as Caleb is on his way to run errands for his mother, he gets a vision of the dead kid in his passenger's seat. This distracts him enough for him to run headlong in to a semi carrying logs, his car exploding and reassembling behind the truck. That night, Sarah has a strange dream where hundreds upon hundreds of spiders are in her room, one crawling into Kate's nose, and some breaking out of her forehead. A day later, Caleb and Chase have a race in the swimming pool. Most of the race, they are neck-and-neck, until Caleb sees Chase's eyes turn all black, meaning he used the power the boys have. Afterward, the boys suspect Chase of being of the 5th family. During their meeting, Caleb gets a call from Sarah, saying that Kate was omitted to the hospital, having an allergic reaction to what looked like hundreds of insect bites, like spiders even. Hearing this, Pogue races off on his motorcycle, ignoring Caleb's warnings. On the road, he runs into Chase, who sends his bike, along with him, flying. Chase warns Pogue that they can't beat him because he is too powerful. At that time, Caleb shows up at Sarah's dorm, where the two talk, till there is a know at the door. Sarah believes this might be Pogue, only to find Caleb standing there. Before him, Sarah disappears, reappearing on the bed, next to Chase. It seamed that Chase was impersonating Caleb to get close to Sarah. After a chat with Caleb, in which Chase puts a spider in Sarah's ear to start a curse, Chase says that tomorrow night, when Caleb ascends, Chase wants him to give Chase his power, threatening to kill everyone else if he doesn't. Caleb decides to tell Sarah everything. As a prom like dance is going on that night, Caleb sends Reid and Tyler to the dance to protect Sarah in case Chase comes for her. Chase gets her anyway, when they have their back to her for a couple seconds. Chase shows up on Caleb's car, busting out all it's windows. Caleb gets out and walks up to the barn where he's supposed to ascend, finding Chase there, with Sarah in a sort of trance. After a couple bad puns from Chase, and a small fight, Caleb ascends. After that, the two are about evenly matched, since Chase had taken his father's power. The battle jumps outside, where the two go all out. Eventually, Caleb begins to get the upper hand after his father wills him his power. He throws Chase into a fireball, where he disappears. Afterward, he saves Sarah from the burning barn. When the fire department and ambulances put out the fire and patch up the two survivors, they say that they could not find Chase's body. After repairing his windshield, Caleb and Sarah drive off, ending the movie.
I officially give this movie my approval. Go see it.
