Two Week Break

It's the end of the school term and time for a recharge of the batteries before going into battle for a final ten weeks up to the end of the school year.  I've had a battle companion by my side in my most fraught classes and the good news is that it will continue during next term too.  However, he has not been without wounding during this battle and has to go to hospital for about 4 weeks due to the need for some running repairs to battle scars gained.

I will be re-charging my batteries by lazing around at home for a few days.  My main concern is the fight for air as my housemate continues to repeatedly let off his stink bombs whilst we are in the midst of battle of a different kind. (the tables have been turned)  The medieval war on the PS3 is an addiction that only serves up sore thumbs and dead skin, not to mention contaminated lungs.

I cbf (spotty teenage saying) writing anymore with the battle theme so I'll give up on that.

The next 8 or 9 days after this will be spent in Singapore again.  I can't believe that this is the 5th trip to Singapore this year.  The first thing I'll be doing when I'm there is going for a hair cut at Cathay Super Cuts.  My hair may not be all that important to me in terms of what I do to it but I have been spoiling somewhat extravagantly lately.  This will be my 5th time that I've gone to Singapore for my hair cut out of the last 6 cuts.  If that doesn't make any sense to you it simply means; 5 out of my last 6 cuts have been in Singapore.  I just hope the Aussie dollar doesn't plummet before I change my money there.

After I get back I'll have a few days to teach myself Flash.  I hope to enlist the help of one of my friends to show me again how to use it as it is much easier than figuring things out from the book.  The kids learn the program at a faster rate than me and will be far more advanced than me by the time they finish their few weeks of it.  Proof of that has been seen in some of the games on game maker and also some of the images created in PhotoShop by some students.

I got distracted by something last night and when I went to bed I'd forgotten to put my left over dinner in the fridge.  It was left out from about 10pm until 8am when I rushed out of bed to put it away.  Is it too long?  Can it still be eaten?  It looks fine.  It is/was roast lamb and potato and veggie.  I hope it's not spoiled.  Aiyah.

Here's a selection of random pictures edited/created from some year 9's.

Saturday 6th September

Today has been an interesting day at the retirement village job.  Early this morning, about 5:15am, I had an emergency alarm call and had to see to a woman who has had a hip replacement and was in severe pain.  She asked me to call the amublance, so I did, only to be told that her husband had already called for one a few minutes earlier.  Oh well.  Sometimes people forget the minor details.  She went to hospital about an hour or so later with the 2 paramedics.  The guy had a weird accent and the girl was called Esther.  Hmm, my nan was called Esther.  Oh, yeah, and I had the misfortune to see a sight that I did not need to see and bugger, I hate flashbacks.

School has been going well.  I've marked 3 classes work today during my shift.  I've been trying different class management techniques with some kids that have the same brain capacities as a plant.  One class is doing a comic strip using photoshop and they are having to draw their plans.  They were not doing much so I went over to them and asked what was going on.  They were stuck on drawing a horse.  I told them if they both drew one, I'd also draw one for them and then see if they think they can draw or not compared to me.  (Anyone who has played pictionary with me will know I cannot draw)  Anyway, I was mightily impressed with my horse.  It was the only one to have a mane (main?) and legs that looked different sizes as opposed to four legs all in one line.

Some excuses kids give not to do their work are quite interesting.  I'm always trying to find a solution to their problem so they have to come up with better excuses.  One's partner was not there so could not get the work off the other computer.  I reset the password and logged in and stole the file.  One down.  I don't have a pen as someone superglued my bag together and I can't get my pencil case.  I went and got him some pens and pencils for the lesson. (This was a real occurence I found out later from the admin dept)  Two down.  This is gay. (damn intelligent, can't even think of an excuse)  Well, let me call your mum and tell her what you think.  Three down.  Why are you ten minutes late?  My teacher let me out late.  Ok, go back to that teacher and get them to write me a note telling me why they let you out late.  Well, actually, I walked slowly, she let us out on time.  Lunch time detention.  Four down.  I can't work if you're looking at me like that, stop looking at me like that, I"ll punch your f*#king head in.  Suspension. Five down.

Life is somewhat dull at the moment in Perth.  Almost everyday is spent at home after work and it just feels like I'm passing the time rather than enjoying the time.  The highlight of some days is the show, Two and a Half Men.  I love this show.  I have a kid called Jake in my class and he's so like that boy, except the one in my class has man b**bs.  He'll call me over and when I get there he'll talk to someone else about something totally different.  Or he will ask me a question and I'll answer it and his reply will be totally on another topic and it's like he never heard a word I said.  At least the Jake on the tv is capable of being funny.

One kid asked me to start shouting to see if I could 'break a high' like his other teacher did.  I replied to him, how about I break your neck instead?  His group mates then made fun of him for the rest of the lesson as he got 'owned by a teacher'.  I think being 'owned by a teacher' is like having a perm in this day and age.  It's just wrong and embarrassing.  At least one makes me feel better about my day though. heh.

I'm still of the opinion that kids should be seen and not heard.  They are still little bastards too.  It's just that some are bigger bastards than others.  The trick is to be the biggest bastard yourself. heh.

Do you want to be paid to sleep?

If so, there is a job going at one of my workplaces.  It involves working from Friday at 4pm until Sunday 8:30am.  You get to sleep pretty much as long as you want but do have to do some light cleaning that will take a couple of hours during the time you're there.  Oh, and you do have to wake up at 6am both mornings to unlock doors but I'm back in bed again by 6:30am.

The other two people have left and now it means I have to do every weekend at the moment as well as teaching almost full-time. (I get three hours per week off but for two of them I get called in anyway)  They have placed an ad twice but no response and will place another one this week.  Oh yeah, you need a First Aid certificate too or at least be willing to get one before starting work.

Going back to Singapore for the 5th time this year in October.  I enjoy travelling but it's quite an expense.  Luckily this one is on Mum's frequent flyer points.  It still cost over $300 in taxes though.

Missed several people's birthday's these last few weeks.  They were mainly my nephews but I hardly feel like going and buying a card when I get home as I'm starting to get tired from working almost all of the days.  At least my weekday hours are fairly short.

At school this week, one boy verbally assaulted me.  I have to write the report on Monday as I had no time on Friday because I had to rush off to work.  Oh well, at least it wasn't one of the bigger kids!

Learning photoshop is quite fun although one of the classes isn't.  (see above paragrpah)  I am learning how to do a lot of different functions, now if only the kids would listen then they too could learn.

I am a firm believer that "kids should be seen and not heard."  Little bastards!!!!

BBQ's, Pulled Muscles and General CBF During School

SOCCER, SOCCER, SOCCER and more SOCCER

In English, this translates to FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL and more FOOTBALL

Saturday 14th June was spent at South Perth having a BBQ with some friends and also a friendly kick about with the football.  It was enjoyable and the left over food was even better as we didn't have to cook for a few days.

A friend, whom I shall call Mitch, came over from Melbourne for this weekend just gone and he decided that he also wanted a kick about.  So we headed to the other side of the river and played 3-a-side for about 2 and a half hours.  The size of the pitch was only about 15 meters but it didn't stop us all from being out of breath within the first 5 minutes, even the; 'we go to the gym 4 times a week' boys. haha.  During this game there was frequent diving from an Italian, feigning injury by most when making mistakes, a groin shot that had a delayed reaction on the receiver, a treading on hand by the only person (I think) wearing some kind of studs, a slightly pulled muscle (mine) and probably a fair few aches this morning.

After I got home yesterday, I had dinner, showered and then went to play snooker against a good friend whom I haven't seen for a while.  I then got a call from work telling me that I'm in Phys Ed all day today (Monday).  Out of the 5 lessons I had to take today, four were football.  During period four, my only none football class, I had to read a book to the year 11 students as they're too lazy.  I quit after about 5 pages and just let them get on with their own thing.  I was way too tired to sit and read to people not listening to me.

Here's my housemate and my good friend Alex at last weekends BBQ at South Perth.

Singapore Service Charge - A Whinge

My most recent visit to what is fast becoming my second home ended early this morning with a 01:20 flight back to Perth.  The flight was not full, meaning I can afford myself economy style business class.  (I had 3 seats to myself)  Thankfully I was able to get a 2 hour solid block of sleep because of the new found space at the rear of the plane.

I was at the airport from early afternoon and spent lots of time wandering around and, of course, eating.  At terminal 3 I decided upon having egg noodles with chicken for $5.60.  The food came and I'd prepared my exact money to pay at the end.  I asked for the bill and there it was, $6.58.  So, one dollar wasted.

Prior to this, I reclaimed my tax back for my 'tax free shopping'.  It said on the receip that I was due $129.  I got to the counter and the lady passed me two fifties and a five.  I looked at her and said inquisitively, "$105?, where's the rest?"  She pointed at her piece of paper and there it was.  Service fee $24.  So, $24 wasted.

I stayed one extra night in Singapore and booked into a hotel for that night in Orchard.  The room was only a twin at $150 because of no double rooms left.  Now, if I'm paying that amount, I want a big bed.  They offered me an upgrade for an extra $40.  Ok, that's not bad.  I was asked to pay it on checking out.  Check-out time came and I prepared $40.  She showed me the bill and it was $47.  How the hell?  $4 service fee and $3 GST.  So another $7 wasted.

Now I don't know about you but if something is offered to me at $40 then make it $40.  Don't then say the next day or after I've consumed it that it's $40 plus plus.  Tell me that same time so I can base my decision accordingly.  I'm just glad I flatly refused to tip the Indian speaking porter who I couldn't understand and who didn't really know what he was on about when explaining the room features to me.

Next time I'm there (July), I'm going to ask everyone I buy items/services from for the total price and ask them to explain what exactly is this 'service fee'.

Rant over...til the next time.
