Singapore Service Charge - A Whinge
My
most recent visit to what is fast becoming my second home ended early
this morning with a 01:20 flight back to Perth. The flight was not
full, meaning I can afford myself economy style business class. (I had
3 seats to myself) Thankfully I was able to get a 2 hour solid block
of sleep because of the new found space at the rear of the plane.
I
was at the airport from early afternoon and spent lots of time
wandering around and, of course, eating. At terminal 3 I decided upon
having egg noodles with chicken for $5.60. The food came and I'd
prepared my exact money to pay at the end. I asked for the bill and
there it was, $6.58. So, one dollar wasted.
Prior to this, I
reclaimed my tax back for my 'tax free shopping'. It said on the
receip that I was due $129. I got to the counter and the lady passed
me two fifties and a five. I looked at her and said inquisitively,
"$105?, where's the rest?" She pointed at her piece of paper and there
it was. Service fee $24. So, $24 wasted.
I stayed one extra
night in Singapore and booked into a hotel for that night in Orchard.
The room was only a twin at $150 because of no double rooms left. Now,
if I'm paying that amount, I want a big bed. They offered me an
upgrade for an extra $40. Ok, that's not bad. I was asked to pay it
on checking out. Check-out time came and I prepared $40. She showed
me the bill and it was $47. How the hell? $4 service fee and $3 GST.
So another $7 wasted.
Now I don't know about you but if
something is offered to me at $40 then make it $40. Don't then say the
next day or after I've consumed it that it's $40 plus plus. Tell me
that same time so I can base my decision accordingly. I'm just glad I
flatly refused to tip the Indian speaking porter who I couldn't
understand and who didn't really know what he was on about when
explaining the room features to me.
Next time I'm there
(July), I'm going to ask everyone I buy items/services from for the
total price and ask them to explain what exactly is this 'service
fee'.
Rant over...til the next time.
