| While walking to school yesterday, some lady told me that I have "the soul of satan" among other things. Basically she was asking me to give her money and I didn't give it to her. Ostensibly, she didn't look badly off like other homeless people, and honestly, she _looked_ friendly. Her excuse for asking for money was that she just lost her job and needed bus fare. Of course, that excuse is a sham. I think she asked me for bus fare a yr ago. That time I did give her money for bus fare (and when she saw my wallet she asked me for more and was annoyed that I declined). Anyways, her comment made me think alittle. But the ultimate lesson that I've taken away from is this:
If I've been convinced of anything in Berkeley, it's that money is a completely worthless (and probably evil) thing to offer 99% of beggars. All you're doing is turning begging into a job for them and letting them whore out their dignity. I'm not saying that you shouldn't help those in need (even if they don't appreciate it), but giving them money is not the right thing to do.

| CA handsfree lawJust a little reminder that the CA handsfree law goes into effect July 1, 2008. Fines are $20 for the first offence and $50 thereafter. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/cellularphonelaws/index.htm | | |
| I'm back from the amberson 21 reunion. Though we "wasted" alot of time, it was fun and we had alot to talk about. I thought I'd just post about my trip back on megabus though. It's really cheap. I paid $14.50 for the LA-OAK redeye. If you're one of the first 4 people to book it's $1.50! And if you book last minute it seems to end up being about $35. But that doesn't really matter cause they're stopping their CA routes on June 22 since they haven't been getting enough passengers.
On this trip it was though. I had the unfortunate luck of sitting next to some wierdo. I'm not sure what was up. It felt like he kept touching my leg or something, but I couldn't be sure. Maybe he was trying to get more space for himself. Of course there's the more obvious explanation that he's queer. It was sooo creepy. It kept me awake for 1/4 of the trip. I really wanted to just tell him out loud to quit touching me, but I wasn't sure he was doing it intentionally. I ended up moving my wallet to the window side pocket, squeezing toward the window away from the dude, and semi-violently kicking my leg whenever I felt something, and it eventually stopped. but geez, it was creepy.
| I thought this was an interesting post about gas prices (from bonez318ti). http://www.xanga.com/bonez318ti/650239182/item.html and (also from his blog) a similar businessweek article: http://www.businessweek.com/lifestyle/content/apr2008/bw2008041_945564.htm
This is a totally diff topic, but I get evangelized to sometimes at Berkeley, almost invariably by Koreans. (For some reason they sometimes mistake me as Korean, like the guy today, but that's beside the point). I actually stop and listen to them sometimes. They can really go on and on sometimes. What I wonder about is if the evangelists are listening to those they're speaking/preaching to. Alot of times they seem to have a preplanned spiel. Like today, I ended up praying the sinner's prayer (partly cause it was a Korean speaking pastor and someone translating, so there was a little misunderstanding). I suppose they want to make sure they say everything they think needs to be said, but I would've rather just chatted a bit.
| Stupid Verizon. They raised txt messaging rates for the 2nd yr in a row. Now it's 20c per msg (both sending and receiving). That's utterly ridiculous. The cost of transmitting 2kb (and that's bits not bytes) is ridiculously low. Plus, most txt msgs prob have more like 100-160 bits of info (3-4 bits/char * 30-40 chars). Long distance phone calls prob haven't even been 20c/min since the 80's. Verizon doesn't even do a good job of delivering the msgs. When dada visited his other friend on AT&T received his msgs just fine. I got nothing. (btw AT&T is raising their rate at the end of this month). If you're going to send me a text message, make sure any relevant info is <= 15 chars. That seems to be the amount I can read without opening the msg. I used to open some msgs, but I'm now determined not to open any unless it's an emergency (but personally, if it's really an emergency I would not trust txt messaging at all). | | |
