| The Sculpture of Mishu
I once posed for an artist in New York City named Vincent Zhang, and he sculpted this statue of my figure.
After I saw the finished statue, I told him, "It's like you captured my soul in this statue, Vincent! How do you know me so well?"
He said that I was wrong. "I'm an artist of the physical world," he said. "I sculpt the body, not the mind. I'm oblivious to any form or beauty, or even reality, beyond the body."
But I insisted. "Come on Zhang, you've got to know something! Nobody's ever portrayed what I feel inside me so perfectly before this statue!"
Vincent sighed, like some parents do before explaining a simple thing to an ignorant child. (This wasn't that long ago, but I guess I was an ignorant child back then.)
"This statue is nothing but a mirror," he said, "just in a different shape than you're used to. This chiseled bronze, this gray paint, is only the clear surface of the mirror. And when you look at the surface of this mirror, what you see reflected back to you is just what you want to see: yourself. There is no meaning inherent in this sculpture; if you find any meaning in this statue deeper than the superficial surface and the physical body, it's because you're projecting this meaning onto it. You think I've sculpted your mind, your soul, into this statue, but I haven't; I've only sculpted your body. Your soul is not in this statue, and if you see it here, you're only seeing your own soul's reflection - this statue is just a mirror." | | |
| Unheeded adviceSo this Puerto Rican coworker of mine who is a devoted christian gets easily frustrated with customers a lot and goes on angry rants after they leave. So I offered some advice.
Me: You should do what I do: just think of all the ways that you're better than this customer. Trust me, you won't feel angry, really. You might even start to pity this person. Coworker: Oh no, man, Jesus Christ said not to show pride in yourself. Me: Right. Because pride is so much worse than anger and hatred.
I really don't see a problem with having a lot of pride in one's self. Some call it pride and vanity, some call it confidence and self-esteem. Either way, one's indomitable ego can definitely sustain one if faced with being in situations that might seem undesirable.

I think it's very probable thatmy apathy is a response to my envy, a defense mechanism of sorts. And my plans of philanthropy may be in response to my apathy, and caused by guilt over having more things than other people and not caring about the fates of those people less fortunate than me.
In other news, Turtles Can Fly is one of the best movies I've ever seen. While watching this, I was reminded of Edges Of The Lord, but really, Edges Of The Lord doesn't hold a candle to this... olympic torch(?).Watch it (here http://quicksilverscreen.com/watch?video=48807) or buy the dvd. Or don't.
