  • Film Review - Barefoot in the Park

After watching the Wimbledon highlights last night (too see the King and the Matador go through to the final in straight sets...WHOOP) me and my ma were channel surfing for something else to watch.  I was about to go grab my DVD cases when 'Barefoot in the Park' came on Sky Classics.  I'd never seen it before but being a Robert Redford fan I was up for watching it and my ma wasn't bothered either.

It's a hilarious movie, one which I'm glad to have sat down to watch.  The kind of comedy classic that doesn't lose it's edge over the years, although we were both sitting going 'Wow...look how young they are' (and still both gorgeous as ever now).  I've not watched many Jane Fonda movies, but after watching this I could be spurred on to see others.

It's a basic story, two newlyweds settling into their first apartment together.

Which just happens to be on the sixth floor.

Consists of three basic rooms of very small size (they have to sleep on a 'large' single bed).

    Has no heating.

Has tennants of questionable background and social lives.

Oh and their neighbour on occasion has to use their bedroom window to climb out onto the roof in order to get
into his attic apartment if he happens to be locked out for failure to pay his rent.

The comedy fare this all throws at you has you laughing with tears running down your face.  Fonda and Redford both has some brilliant comedy scenes and lines but not only that, the support cast of Charles Boyer as Victor Valesco (the neighbour) and Mildred Natwick as Ethel Banks (Fonda's characters mother) lend so much to the running of the movie and the comedy antics.

Running gags ensue throughout the movie yet they don't become boring just flesh it out more.   And throughout we see the two newlyweds realising that married life isn't always going to be like the first six days in the Plaza Hotel room (of which they never exited throughout their stay).

If anyone hasn't seen this movie, I'd certainly recommend if you like your comedies.

For me I'm off to see where I can buy it, definitely one to be owned.

  • People say smoking is a choice. But if you’re addicted to something, doesn’t that rule o

Yes it's still a choice.  'Everything we do is a choice' (to coin an overused phrase from one of my favourite shows).  Considering the amount of information out there now about the risks of smoking, what it can do to a persons body as well as those around them who are second hand smoking from their habit there can be no excuse by anyone to say 'I'm an addict'.  You made the chocie to light up that first cigarette.

A smoker MADE the chocie to start smoking, be it because they wanted to or because they were 'pressured' into it (which I find a pitiful excuse to risk your entire life on).

They say that an addict has to hit rock bottom before they can help themselves onto the ladder of their recoverry, whatever the addiction.  Thus a choice is made, although their addiction has taken them to the lowest of depths in order for them mentally to say enough is enough.

Saying your an 'addict' with smoking is just an excuse, because many 'addicts' of whatevrer their vice overcome them everyday.  True there should be more done about different addictions and more help given but the smoker has to make that choice in their mind that enough is enough.

If the question is in regards to someone JUST starting out smoking then there's no addiction there in the first place, thus they make the descison of their own free will, thus a choice is made.

  • The long slow spiral...

into the ever impending doom of Big Brother Britain.

I've just finished an seven hour shift at work.  I step in the door, pick up the post, climb stairs, sort through post, find two letter addressed to moi.

One is selling me heating.  It's the middle of summer, and so we had  a bad day yesterday, but heating in the summer.  Huh?

And the other, well the other has really gotten me quite mad.

It's from the council. Informing me of the Enviromental act 19 sumthin sumthin.

Apparently, we flagrant tramps living here dumped our rubbish on the back door in a large heap and are therefore under observation lest it happens again when we will be charged.  Ok so they didn't word it as that, but still they may as well say it.

I think personally they have a vendetta against our house seeing as we keep calling the council to come clean the front street.

I love how they are trying to be environmentally friendly by sending me this letter complaining about the two black bin  bags left by the back door....a letter comprising of no less that three large A4 sheets of paper and a envelope.  How very environmentally friendly.  They could have at least saved a sheet and printed on both sides for heavens sake.

My puzzlement goes further in that the letter is addressed to me when, I don't even own the property. It's my rents house, I just live here. So why is the letter addressed to me?  (perhaps because they are afraid of mother bird phoning them and giving them an ear full.  I'm about to call the dude myself and tell him what for!) I was puzzled by this until I saw the photo.  Yes one of the sheets of paper is a A4 picture of the two offending bin bags, one of which is ripped open at the side and a HofF statement peering out from within.  I'm assuming the bin men or whoever these Big Brother people are who go around the back lanes with digital camera's taking pictures of rubbish ripped it open to find out the address of the property.  Either that or some sad git has been going through looking for documents to steal my identity.  If they have, they can receive all the Big Brother letters from now on, I'll do without thank you very much.

This has really go me a bit P.O.  The whole bin collection in the country as a whole has become a farce.  And now I'm receiving letters complete with photographic evidence complaining that I'm being un-environmentally friendly to my back lane.

I'd like them to provide the evidence that the bags were dumped out in the lane like that.
I want to see them prove that some yob didn't remove the bags from the wheelie bin and dump them there.
I want to see them prove they didn't remove the bags themselves, open them, dump them and take pictures just so they could send out a letter to fulfill some Big Brother list quota they have to reach every month.

We've lived here 28yrs, in that time we've complied to regulations to putting out rubbish.  Why now would we start breaking the law? It's not like we like having Big Brother on our backs watching our every move and creeping through the back lanes in search of elusive black bags which have escaped the wheelie bin.

  • Squeeerific...

Both my favourites won on the shows:

Britains Got Talent & I'd Do Anything.

Infact, considering these shows have been going on for months now, I'm rather surprised at myself for not blogging more about them, considering I've been hooked on them since they started.

Britains Got Talent has been brilliant this year.  It blew last years contest out of the water and, I think, gave the youth of todays Britain a real boost in terms of positive feelings towards them.  It's so often now that we read all the bad stuff going on in 'young Britain' and yes things have been going down for quite sometime.  However, BGT has really proved the point that you can't tar everyone with the same brush, that there are even a handful of young people wanting to create a better life for themselves.  The majority of the Semi Finals as well as the finals was made up of talented youth, from the tender age of eight or nine (The Cheeky Monkeys) to twenties (Signature, Escala).

The talent has been immense to say the least. Where as last year, it was evident even from the audition stage that Paul Potts had won the nations heart, this year round so many talented people tugged at our heart strings.  I did adore George Samson, the comeback kid who rocked our hearts with his dance routine, but so many other acts caught our imaginations as well.  Signature were in with a chance from their audition which had us applauding vigourously with the mix of Micheal Jackson classic dance and bhangra, Andrew Johnston and Faryl Smith took our breath away with their angelic voices.  Escala looked stunning as they played us some classical tunes.

But watching the final, and knowing George Samson's story, I was willing him to win, as much as I loved the clash of cultures in Signatures routine.  George Samson is the comeback kid, after failing to get to the semi finals last year.  This year he came back better than ever and watching him dance you just recognise something special in him, he was dancing his way into a different future and it's satisfying to know that such a worthy winner won Britains biggest talent contest.

As for I'd Do Anything, it may have lost out on the viewing figures due to being up against, BGT, but I loved the show.  I'm going to miss not watching it every week.  Of the three shows they've done of this concept, (Maria, Joseph & Nancy) this is the only one I've stuck to watching.  Possibly because Oliver is one of my favourite musicals.  Jodie stuck out from the beginning as being in with a shot and stayed consistent throughout the entire show.  The others girls have been just as fun to watch, but Jodie was my favourite from the beginning as well as Jessie.  Seeing them in the top two was great, and at one point I thought Jessie was going to win it, her singing in the final was sensational. But I was so pleased when Jodie won, or should I say 'chuffed' as the winning lady said herself!  Oh to be able to jump on a train and get down to the west end to see her perform.  I'm sure she'll be a great success, and I'm sure with the talent she has, Jessie won't be without offers in shows herself.

It's been an fun few months watching these shows, now all we have to look forward to in the next few months is, (Cringe, groan, crawl under a rock until it's over)...Big Brother.

Hands up everyone who thinks another 'Talent finding concept' should be found, so we don't have to suffer reality shows number one most irritating concept, BB.

  • Universal Studios Fire

My sis has just come in telling me to turn on the news.  Universal Studios is undergoing a major fire, with 40,000 films close to being destroyed in the blaze alongside the 'Back to the Future' lot and 'King Kong' exhibit as well as other parts of the studios.  Nobody is thought to have been hurt in the blaze.

Thankfully they have it under control but the loss will be immense in terms of Hollywood film history (as well as cash flow).

If I recall, this isn't the first blaze Universal have suffered, am I wrong in remembering a blaze back in the 80's which affected the filming of the third Back to the Future movie?

The financial damage will be huge, not only classic memorabilia from sets, such as 'Court house square' and 'The Clock Tower' from BBTF and the film vault holding the 40,000 movies, many of which are master copies for old vintage movies.
