Boozing and Cruising.

Or drinking and driving.

One of my best friends, whose anonymity will be kept, got arrested for DUI this weekend.  Luckily he didn't get hurt or hurt anyone while DUI.  The specifics make it an interesting story, since he wasn't even in the car and the keys weren't in the ignition when the cops stopped by his car and arrested him.  That's a whole 'nother pickle, though.  What I really wanted to talk about was the options people have other than driving intoxicated when coming home from something.

There's designated drivers.
Calling a taxi.
Eating after leaving the bar.
Staying put if you're at a party.

The thing is, I find a few flaws in these options.  Let me start with designated drivers.  I was lucky to have one person in my life who didn't drink but loved to go out with the gang.  Other than that, I've yet to see anyone else jumping up and down wanting to be the DD.  With cabs, if you live 30 minutes outside the city like me, you'll find yourself grabbing your wallet and not opening it rather than grabbing the phone to call a cab.  Plus you'd either have to get a cab both ways, or leave your car at the scene of the drinking and get it the next day which may be too much of a hassle for some people.  Most of the time, I'm lucky to have restaurants that are open 24/7 right next to the bars that I go to, and I take a leisure hour to sober up and eat something.  But that hour and food won't always legally sober you up.

I guess looking at the subject on the whole, one should understand that if given an adult privilege like drinking, one should act like an adult when doing it.  Mainly to me that means planning beforehand how you're going to handle your drunkenness.  If you can't find a DD, and you're too far to call a taxi, and you don't handle liquor very well, you probably shouldn't be going out drinking in the first place.  It only takes one time to ruin a life.

I really didn't think I'd be on a soapbox, but my grandma died drunk driving when I was 15 and I really should be adamant about this....at least with myself.  Lord knows my mom does it enough for me.  So if you got any preachy vibes, they were mainly directed towards me if that makes sense.

BTW, I realize most people can have a drink or two, limit themselves, and not get drunk.  This is just a "better safe than sorry" kinda post.  (Knocks on wood on not getting a DUI)

Let me guess...your friend wasn't driving, but they had their keys on their person.  They arrested him for intent.

Hope he fairs as well as my DUI friend, this guy has scraped through 3 DUI arrests and never been sentenced.  Every case was thrown out of court.

Umm...yeah...planning. It's all about that and too many people fail to realize they should have a plan if they go out to drink. As for DD - yeah it sucks - but when you put rules around it...e.g. the job rotates, use someone else's car, or they don't pay for food, soda or gas that night...it's better.

I hate being DD and yet somehow I'm the one that ends up doing it.  Chris Hatfield owes me this year though.

Yeah...it is amazing to me how many people think they are ok to drive once drinking.  It's all about watching out for your friends and calling them out on it when you notice them being stupid!  I aggree with AerialPJ as well...planning ahead is key and offering incentives to those who are forced to stay sober!   Either that or suck it up and cab it even if it's expensive.
