| Back to my normal avatar, now that the tournament is over...
It's strange - the German team placed second this time, after being
third in 2006, but it felt like more back then. I think that has to do
with the final game; they won the game for third place two years ago,
ending the tournament with an excellent game and a victory, so it was
positive. This time they lost the final game and played one of their
poorer games, so the end feels less triumphant. At any rate, it was
great fun while it lasted, and it's nice to be able to get on with my
life afterwards - I have lots of sewing to do this week if I want to
get my costume and my work of art finished in time for the annual
gathering of the German Tolkien Society in ten days!
| Spain won the finale game, 1 - 0, and there's even a Tolkien connection
in there. The player who shot the all-important goal was Torres, and
he has a tattoo in Tengwar on his arm. At any rate, the Spanish team
played much better than the German team for most of the game and
deserved to win. End of tournament, back to our regularly scheduled
life. | | |
| I am currently sewing on a fabric book which includes the poem "The
road goes ever on". The cover is, as must be, a Hobbit
hole. Here is a photo of it so far; the sewing machine work is
done, and I am working on the poetry pages. When they are all
sewn together I will add details such as embroidery, buttons, quilting,
etc. by hand. (The bottom edge of the entry surface is only
pinned; I will tuck the edges of the road underneath it before it's
sewn down.)

Yes, the door is functional; it opens to show a photo of me in the
round doorway of the Hobbiton movie site in New Zealand - Downers will
know that picture from the photo site. The bricks were made by
quilting a piece of red fabric with grey thread. More photos will be upcoming when the work has progressed.
Information for non-quilters:
The proper acronym for this is WIP -
work in progress. I've used UFO before - it's an unfinished
object. There are also WISPs - works in slow progress, and PIGs -
projects in grocery bags, so I've heard; I've not been reduced to such
extreme storage measures as the latter yet, thankfully!

| Well, that was a roller-coaster ride of a football game. The Turkish
players looked like winners much of the time, but at the end, the
Germans had shot one goal more, and that's what makes a winner.
Tomorrow's game will decide if our team plays against Russia or Spain
in the final game on Sunday.
I must confess, I didn't enjoy watching the game despite the
suspenseful course it took. The German team just didn't play as well
as they did on the weekend against Portugal. I know winning is what
matters, but it's more fun to see them playing well than fighting just
to survive. | | |
| Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal SkullWarning: Mild spoilers ahead
I finally got to the theater to see this movie last night, and I had a
great time! The thing I like about Indy is that it's all tongue in
cheek, neither the dangers nor the foes are to be taken too seriously.
For that reason I can enjoy elements that would normally trouble me,
such as hordes of ants and such. I can also suspend disbelief quite
willingly to accept survival of an atomic explosion in such a
ridiculous manner, improbable chase scenes (including waterfalls) that
would in real life provide a large hospital - or perhaps a mortuary! -
with weeks of hard work, and the presence of aliens and their artefacts.
I liked the fact that the story does not attempt to make Harrison
Ford young again, but includes his increased age in the storyline.
Getting Marion Ravenwood back for the sequel was a brilliant move! Indy
still has lots of action; it's included in ensemble work that has the
whole "family" involved. And the visual punchline at the end (with the
hat) shows that he's not ready to throw in the towel quite yet - I
loved that touch!
The music is as always a strong point - I found myself listening for the
"Indy" melody, mostly in snatches or premonitions during most of the
movie, so as not to overdo it, a wise decision.
The only weak point in my opinion was that the beginning was a bit
slower than usual for an Indy movie - it takes awhile to get going with
some real action.
Another advantage of the timeline is that it prevents repetition of the
same elements the first three movies had. There's some nice criticism
of the McCarthy era. Clothing and music are different enough to make it
look fresh while still having the essential Indy elements.
All in all it was a very entertaining evening. I'd go see it again, if the
theater showed it in English so I could hear the original voices and
dialogues. By the way, the German translation had Harrison Ford
speaking a line that comes from Star Wars, iirc - something to the
effect of having a bad feeling about something that was happening. Is
that there in the original?
