        Do you know our Chesapeake?

crabbers

                                            Bay Dreams

Our Chesapeake Bay is:

  • about 190 miles long, and 35 miles across at its widest point.
  • a watershed that drains parts of six states and the District of Columbia, more than 64,000 square miles.
  • more than 100 feet deep at some points, but average depth is slightly more than 20 feet.
  • more than 11,500 miles along it's shoreline. More than the entire west coast of the United States.
  • a watershed that is home to almost 17 million people.
  • a visiting place for humpback, minke, and pilot whales. Usually along the mouth of the bay during migration.
  • a  place that manatees have infrequently visited.
  • home to a number of shark species.
  • home to a population of oysters that is only about 2% of those of historic numbers.
  • home to more than 350 species of fish, some of which are migrants and some permanent residents
  • home to many species of birds, including raptors and waterfowl, both residents and migratory.
  • the first estuary in the United States designated for intensive government sponsored clean-up efforts.

We are so fortunate to have this magnificent estuary along Delmarva's western shore!
