Historic Timelines I've done a bit more research and added another historic timeline to the one of the Patriarchs. I've found having this is extremely useful to understanding many of the Old Testament books in context. Obviously there's a great deal more detail available than what's here. For example, there's a complete list of Kings, plus all the various prophets. At some point I will break it down further, particularly concentrating on the millenium from David to Jesus. This is just an overview...
Timeline 1: Patriarchs

Timeline 2: Moses to Jesus

The BC dates are given on the second chart whereas creation dates are given on the first chart. Simple math makes it easy to convert between the systems. Doing this, the year of Creation would be 4073 BC, if my math is correct. I happen to believe this is very close. We know, for example, the dates of Solomon's reign using BC dating method.
We also have a clear timeline in scripture giving exact numbers of years linking everything up to Solomon. Yes, its in there. No, we don't need to know dates from the book of Judges to figure it out. In 1 Kings we are given the exact number of years from the exodus to Solomon. Moses gives us the exact length of the period of the Egyptian captivity. Paul even provides the pivotal date when the law was handed down during the exodus.
I do suspect my math may be off by one or two years due to the Roman and creation (Hebrew) calendars using different times to start the new year. I've read various places where "scholars" put the exodus at 1447 BC and this seasonal differential is likely why. There's also reason to believe there may be an error in the secular dating of Solomon's reign by a year, possibly for similar reasons. In the end it doesn't make much difference if the earth is 6077 years old or 6079 years old. I just know it isn't 4 billion years old. What matters is God said it and to the best of our ability to understand it, we need to accept it.
On a jolly note - I have a thing for geography. When I saw Frapper I just had to join. Thanks, Tina. Please Frapper me with your locale! |
