| | How to Deal With It... In the previous post I think I came across harsh. It was not my intent to paint a picture of a cruel or uncaring God, but it was my intent to stake a claim to the fact of His existance and our complete inability to deny or navigate around Him. Now that we've established God is God and we are not, next we need to decide whether to submit to His Lordship willingly, or reject His authority.
Eze 33:11 Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel? This is one of my favorite verses of scripture. Not because I'm wicked and this is a loophole for me (though I know I am not worthy of redemption on my own), but because it explains why God allows bad things. I read on another blog site recently about a fellow who said he couldn't believe in a God who could forgive Hitler on his deathbed had he asked. The author of the blog responded that he couldn't believe in a God who didn't have that power. I agree with the author. Jesus said he was like the shepherd who would leave the flock in relative safety to go and hunt the one lost lamb. I don't think there's just one reason why God allows things we think are bad to happen to us, but I do think extending the opportunity for salvation to those who reject Him today is a sound reason for allowing them to have a tomorrow.
Jer 17:9-10 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? 10 “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind,to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.” None of us are perfect, and when rely on our own understanding, our own feelings, we are deceived. This is why we need God to be our Lord and not be our own masters. We cannot bestow on ourselves eternal life and we cannot give ourselves what God can give us. We must submit to His authority and allow Him to sift us, refine us, and carry our cross. His burden is light - it is our own burdens which are heavy.
Jer 4:14 O Jerusalem, wash your heart from evil, that you may be saved. How long shall your wicked thoughts lodge within you? Once you realize God is good and your own heart is not, then you need to wash your heart of evil and be saved. Jesus proclaimed exactly this to Nicodemus when he said to him he must be born again to be saved. When the Holy Spirit comes and resides, it cannot come into a dung heap. The act of baptism is an outward symbol of the cleaning that takes place when the blood of Jesus washes away our sin and restores our wicked hearts to a right relationship with Him. We are grafted into the family and inheritance of Abraham.
See Jer 23:5-6 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’ Jeremiah prophesies of the branch called "YHWH is our righteousness". This is undoubtedly Yeshua (Jesus).
John 15:1-10 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch of mine that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. (bold emphasis added) Jesus extends the vine/branch illustration in this passage from the Gospel of John. Note in Verse 3, we are clean not through anything we do, but by the word he (Jesus) speaks on our behalf. We are then instructed to abide in him and he promises to abide in us. When we do, we will bear good fruit. It cannot be avoided. If we choose not, then we will bear no good fruit. Fruit is a result, not a cause of salvation. Good fruit doesn't justify, but proves justification by the forgiving word and redeeming blood of Jesus.
So, it seems to me the way to "deal with it" is to wash yourself in the blood of Christ by putting your trust in him for eternal salvation and Lordship of your own personal life, thus becoming grafted or adopted into his eternal family and accepting all that comes with it. |
