Drummer Problems...

Morrissey has cancelled his Saturday night headline slot at this year's Isle Of Wight festival, after the star's drummer deserted him to go on tour with Good Charlotte...
According to the singer’s official website, Morrissey will not be appearing as planned on June 11 due to “the pressure of preparing the new album” - always made worse when your drummer walks out to follow a shabby band on tour.
Their statement read: “Morrissey will regrettably not be appearing at the Isle Of Wight Festival on the 11th of June as scheduled. The pressure of preparing the new album and losing his drummer earlier this month has made it impossible to do the gig without massively compromising both the gig and the album. Apologies to all the fans, the organisers and the people of the Isle Of Wight.”
It’s currently unknown who will fill the Saturday headline slot. Roxy Music are scheduled to appear second on the bill as 'special guests' and Razorlight and Faithless are scheduled to joint headline on the Friday night, so it's possible one of those could move over.
The Isle Of Wight Festival 2005 takes place between 10-12 June at Seaclose Park, Newport.

Their critics call them copycats. Their fans call them cool. Joel Madden just shrugs his shoulders. To him, pop-rock band, Good Charlotte is about playing kick ass music- even if it offends parents. "We don't mean to," he explains, "but hey thats their f------ problem." And its not much of a problem anyway, because younger fans are listening, buying Good Charlotte Cds and going to concerts.
His love-life must also be frustrating to parents. You see, Madden has managed to score a relationship with squeaky-clean Disney teen queen Hilary Duff - she loves Good Charlotte, too - though he prefers to talk about the band's musical chops.
"Yeah that would be me," the 26-year old Madden admits when asked which of the Madden boys is dating the 17 year-old actress/pop star. "She's great, but I think it's unfair to discuss our relationship. That is something we prefer to keep private."
Madden does reveal that Duff listened to the group's latest CD and "she's cool with it." She has even allowed some of Good Charlotte's anti-establishment image rub off on her- lately she has punked up her look, dressing in torn jeans and painting the name "Joel" on her toenails.
But like Duff and her evolving personal style, Good Charlotte represents teens everywhere, who are often misunderstood. "People in our society are f----- up. They look ate our tatoos and right away think trouble. I was sitting in a plane in L.A. and somebody looked me up and down, then slid over."
The band hopes that their strong sense of independance has had an influence on their fans. "We want to think for ourselves," Madden continues. " That means sometimes you gotta take chances. We're not saying you should jump out a window or anything, just be yourselves. Do something because you want to, not because others want you to do it."
And like most hard rock bands with huge teen followings, they get blamed for unfortunate incidents. "Parents are saying we're poisoning their kids," says Madden. "One woman yelled at me the other day for encouraging her kid to run away from home. I told her, maybe you should have gotten to know you kid better."
Madden was not what you call a model teen himself. When asked about his academic background, he admits that he wanted to drop out. "I hated school and everything about it." But out of respect for his mother, he decided to persevere. "I had promised my mom I would graduate. She begged me to stay in high school, so I did it for her."
There are few things that derail Madden when he's on a roll, but he has stopped cold when asked why Good Charlotte was playing Atlantic City's Borgata this Friday. "We're playing a casino?" asks Madden. "Serious?" "When you're on tour, sometimes you have no idea where you're playing. Its all cool."
Now that he knows where he is going, Madden is considering a soin on the tables. "I actually prefer rolling dice on the streets of Baltimore, where I'm from," he says. "I can't let it go of it, man. Even now when I go home. I'll shoot dice with my homeboys."
Madden explains his loyalty to Maryland, "when we started out, me and my brother, Benji got a lot of love from ordinary people who are out there doing it, working. We still have a lot of friends there. they love our band," he says. "Just because we are doing okay now doesn't mean I forget them."
Madden and his twin brother formed Good Charlotte nine years ago after being inspired by a Beastie Boys concert. They hit it big in 2002 with the release of "The Young and the Hopeless"
The critics, however, weren't kind. Many accused the Madden if being "Blink-182" or "Third Eye Blind wanna-bes.
That doesnt seem to faze Joel Madden. "I'm a fan of both. If they want to compare us to them, that's cool."

I'd be embarressed if someone called me a groupie! theres a group of girls called the aussie good charlotte girls, who i'm friends with and they're all really great but there are some hardcore groupies who we don't like at all. we're not groupies, because we have no intention of sleeping with the band! thats what a groupie is-we're fans. those girls aren't really there for the music, they just want the band. i've been a fan since 2001 when i first heard them on an American radio show, i started looking into them and found out that they were coming to australia. one day i heard on the radio that they were doing a promo tothing that afternoon playing in someones driveway in curl curl [nsw]. My friend and i travlelled five hours to get there and it was a really intimate performace with a small crowd. nobody knew them, so they were just walking around hanging and ou, which they wouldn't be able to do anymore. i was really surprised at how nice they were and it made me love them even more. i've seen them live including small acoustic performances, about five times. when benji and joel came out again a few aussie girls arranged to meet up and see the guys at channel [v]. we got up really, really early went to the studios for half a day till it was time for them to perform. so in the meantime we went to the newsagent and made a banner saying 'we are the gc girls' it was really cool! later we went to a small showcase they were doing at triple m radio station and we managed to get right up front. because there weren't many people there we got to meet them and they were so great and really nice. i met them quite some time ago now, but it was an amazing experience!

R-After you guys talked about that at the Live at Much, I received 19 phone calls ‘do you think you can pass along my resume’, ‘can I work at his office’. It’s amazing, everyone wants to be part of Good Charlotte somehow.
J-Well we want everyone to be involved too, and we are always trying to think of how we can get people, how we can find ways to get kids involved in street teams and stuff. But it’s amazing that people wanna be involved and are interested.

The boys of Good Charlotte count their lucky stars everyday. Ten years ago, the Maryland quintet was still trying hard to make it big in the world of pop-punk. As people like to say, if you want it badly and is willing to work hard enough to make your dreams come true, they eventually will. Shortly after the release of their debut album Good Charlotte, twin brothers Joel and Benji Madden scored a gig as VJs on the MTV rock show All Things Rock that helped the band to spread the word further. And their sweet reward came when their second album The Young & the Hopeless spawned massive hits like "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," "The Anthem," "Girls & Boys," and made them one of the biggest rock bands in the world, with more than 5 million records sold worldwide.

Now, Joel (vocals), Benji (guitars), Billy Martin (guitars), Paul Thomas (bass), and Chris Wilson (drums) are now both rich and famous, a phrase that the press finds delight in, when describing the band. But that doesn't mean they have forgotten their roots and where they came from. In fact, they are working even harder to keep their dreams alive, as evident on their new album The Chronicles Of Life And Death. While still rooted in their pop-punk genre, the band has experimented with different styles (dance-y pop) and elements (orchestration) in their music. Clearly, this is a band that seeks to evolve and let the music speaks for itself more than anything else.

Music aside, Good Charlotte has also taken time out specially to attend the MTV Asia Aid held in Bangkok, Thailand on February 3, 2005. MTVAsia.com's Lennat Mak made a speedy phone call to Joel and found out how Good Charlotte is a band of hope, why the band and Joel aspire to be the Outkast and P. Diddy of pop-punk, and of course, those marriage and baby rumors with Hilary Duff...

You guys are here for the MTV Asia Aid. Any particular reasons that made you sign up?

We just want to do what we can do. We are actually pretty honored that they are going to have us. We are excited to be coming to Asia and we are excited about seeing Thailand and be part of something that's so cool. Just the fact that we can do anything is really cool for us. It just feels good to be involved in something like that.

Is this your first time in Asia?

We've gone to Japan, but we've never been to anywhere like Thailand. This is our first time. We just excited to see what it's about 'coz we don't know anything about it. We are excited to eat Thai food. We love Thai food!

I read that you guys are vegetarian?

Benji is partially vegetarian, Billy's vegetarian for one. I eat meat!

Your new album is titled The Chronicles of Life and Death. Considering what's happening in Asia with the tsunami disaster, do you feel that your record has more of a relevance to the times?

Yeah, I think the Asian community, on the whole, can find some hope, hopefully. We want to make records that have a lot of hope. And I hope that they can find some hope. There's a song on our record called "We Believe." It's speaking directly about things, like what just happened with the tsunamis, and believing in something bigger, believing in people coming together. Like we all believe in the same thing, whether we are from different places, having different beliefs about different things –- it doesn't really matter. In the end, we are all human beings and we care about each other. There's a lot we can do together. If we focus on doing it together, people can make a difference. And I think it's proven for the tsunamis -- there's a lot of people coming together and try to help. It just shows the good of people and the good of human nature. It's really good. As much as people like to look at the world as this dark place, there's still a lot good.

Your songs tend to speak to suicidal fans in a positive way. Is it the band's aim to encourage them to live their lives to the fullest?

Yeah, we want the kids to experience life and not just to give up! It's hard being young sometimes. There's a lot that the kids go through growing up. But it's always better when you get through that. There's light at the end of the tunnel, you know? And we want to encourage our fans to enjoy their lives and live it to the fullest and experience it. With the bad comes good and with the good comes bad. If they can see that we all went through hard times, but we are happy now. We are in a band and hopefully we can encourage the fans to stick it out and really see what life's all about. There's a lot waiting for them.

There are two different versions titled "Life" and "Death" for the new album. Do you know which is selling better than the other?

I don't know each one is selling more than the other. We just wanted to make something special for our fans that they would find out on their own. But then, the record label kinda marketed it as part of the record, which is fine. We just kinda did that so the fans can discover it on their own. It's isn't really like a major deal. We just did it and we wanted to do it unnoticed so fans can find out on their own like "Oh! I have a different record than you do!" And the label kinda turned it into a big deal. But you know, that's what happens, I guess, with labels.

American rock band Good Charlotte says the bond with their New Zealand fans is more than just skin deep. Robyn McLean reports.

Good Charlotte. It's a wholesome name for a band, one that might have Nana saying croakily: "She sounds like a nice girl, does she sing well?"

Just don't show Gran the pictures of Charlotte because she ain't a girl, and she certainly ain't going to be at home knitting bobby socks on a Friday night.

Good Charlotte is the hugely popular American band formed by twin brothers Joel and Benji along with mates Billy, Paul and Chris. Not a sheila in sight.

But if you don't recognise their moniker, you will almost certainly know their massive hit single, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, from a couple of years ago. It still receives high rotation treatment from radio stations here.

The brothers have come a long way since they went to their first concert in 1995, the Beastie Boys Ill Communication Tour. So inspired were they by it that they formed their band two weeks later, unfazed by the fact neither had ever played an instrument or sung.

The twins went on to gain invaluable exposure when music channel giant MTV picked them to host their request show All Things Rock, putting them in the spotlight and no doubt helping boost sales of their second album, The Young and the Hopeless.

We like them here in New Zealand and Good Charlotte's upcoming concerts will be the sixth time the band have played on New Zealand terra firma.

"There's quite a tattoo crowd in New Zealand," says Benji, who has more than 40 permanent markings dotted around his body. "There are a lot of hardcore kids that are all tattooed over there."

He says he loves every one of his tattoos (he's probably never going to be Nana's favourite).

"Each one represents something I like or feel," he says down the line from America. "To me it's just like a collection. I don't think I'd ever get any removed."

And much like a child in a candy shop munching on lollies, Benji doesn't think he'll be able to stop himself from bingeing further.

There's not too much information on Benji or the other band members on the Internet. Their website is out of date and their personal blogs consist of a few paragraphs at the most – Benji hasn't written anything on his. But that hasn't stopped him from acquiring a legion of female fans who have set up numerous sites dedicated to the tattooed one. The sites are normally limited to a single photograph and little else.

GOOD Charlotte have a reputation for being loyal to their fans and Benji says it is important to treat them well and be honest with them.

"If I feel like I need some space, I'll tell them. If I'm having a bad day and don't feel like talking, I'll tell them. That's the thing; you just have to give your fans respect. You have to treat them like people. Our fans are just as honest with us.

"There's always the exception who take it a little too far and will follow you home – that's a bit over the line. But I'm straight up with them and say `I appreciate your enthusiasm for our music but my house is my personal space. I appreciate your passion, but don't come to my house'."

However, overall life is pretty damn good, says Benji, who guesses he'd probably be in trouble with the law if he hadn't landed on his feet musically. But that's not to say that living the life of a rock star is only about endless parties and leggy models stretched out poolside.

"It's really busy," he says. "There's a lot of shows, a lot of travelling. We don't really stop too often.

"You get through because you enjoy it. It is hard at times but I'd never complain about it.

"It's so great, it's so much better than my life was before. This is everything I've dreamed about," he says genuinely.

"There are times when it's hard and lonely but there are so many worse things you can do. I feel lucky," he enthuses.

There are constant I-need-to-pinch-myself-to-believe-this moments, he says, especially when they get to meet and hang out with other bands they have listened to for years.

"We got to meet the guys from Greenday and we're friends with guys like that; that's a big moment. But you have those moments every day. It's like when you win an award. It's like `wow', and then some kid comes up and says something about your music."

Writing lyrics is a hugely personal thing for Benji, but unless you are honest, he says, the creative process won't flow.

"You can't really try to control it or put limitations on when you are writing a song because it messes it up, messes up the process. If it's manufactured, it's just not special," he explains.

"Sometimes it can be embarrassing and sometimes it can make you really vulnerable. You're being more personal with thousands of people than you are with people that you know very well."

However, it can also be cathartic. "Sometimes as a songwriter that's the only place I can open up, the only place I can really be honest. So sometimes that's embarrassing because you know people are going to hear it but you can't filter it or hold it back because it won't be as special. That makes you vulnerable."

Though Nana might not like the look of him, Benji is a pretty sensitive kind of guy who says that the thing he misses most while he's away on tour is showering daily and having clean clothes.

Good Charlotte play Auckland's Town Hall on February 9 and Wellington's Town Hall on February 10 with guests The Bleeders.
