Oh frabjous day!

Well, it didn't take me long to break my before-New Year's resolution of blogging at least once a week. But I never promised perfection.

This post was going to be about my job, giving details on what I have not yet fully covered here (I really do need to soon, though). But something more pressing and worth writing about came up:

I'm writing this on my brand new MacBook computer!

I've been wanting to get one for a while. Although my trusty iBook has served me well for about four years, it seemed time to upgrade. However, several months unemployed left that less feasible. After I finally got a job, I decided I would consider purchasing one once I had paid off my (fortunately not very high) credit card debt. With yesterday's paycheck, I accomplished that. So yes, I didn't waste any time.

Of course, it wasn't a snap decision, as I've been considering it for a while. I went to the local Apple store, today about 80% sure I was going to purchase. (that other 20% the natural reluctance to spend so much money). I did so, it was ready in about 15 minutes (I had extra memory installed), and I took it home.

So I'm very pleased... it's nice to have a shiny new toy (and a much faster one with more hard drive space). And I promise I shall use this new toy to write more here soon.

I... have... returned

You know, when I have to start pretty much every post with some form of "It's been a long time since I've posted," that's pretty sad. So I'm not going to do that this time. Oh... shoot, too late.

Anyway, this post is to announce my (theoretical) return to more full-time blogging. My blog posts have been sporadic since... well, really since I first started grad school (with the bad habit continuing even after I finished), but especially bad in recent months. In the recent two months (or slightly less, to be exact), my excuse has been the new job taking up much time and writing energy.

But I've decided I want to blog again. So I'm forming a slightly early New Year's Resolution to blog at least once a week. And I want to stress the "at least." So I shall now emphasize it: at least once a week. I want, and fully hope, to post more often. But once a week is probably the most I can commit to.

And so this post itself has some actual content, here's what I've been up to as of late:

• Getting used to my new job. I like it so far. But the job should probably get a post of its own, so I'll say more about that later.

• Today I finished my Christmas shopping. You might ask why I was so stupid as to wait until the weekend before Christmas. Honestly, I was asking myself the same thing. Traffic, crowds, long lines, etc. But I survived, and had the fun of spending too much money.

• But actually I could afford to spend more than I should have, as the paycheck I got yesterday was the biggest single paycheck I've ever received (and it wasn't even very big--future ones should be more). Yeah, it's nice to have a real job.

Dear readers, I am glad to be back. And I'll be arrogant enough to assume you're glad as well. More coming soon (and I mean it this time).

I have a job!

So, as the title of this post suggests, I finally have a job. Starting next week (ok, well, that's the training... the work itself starts the week after, for those insisting on precision) I will be a writer for CareerPerfect.

It's amazing how God can give you something better than you actually imagined. When I first started job hunting about three months ago, I thought getting a writing job in Bellingham would be a virtual impossibility. But here it is: the job's in Bellingham, the work sounds interesting, the pay is good, and to top it all off, I'll be working from home. "Could life get any better? I submit that it could not!" (10 bonus points to the first person to identify that quote). God is good.

Anyway, more details to come, but for now I'm just going to bask in this.

BTW, the above novel (for those reading this on Facebook, it's "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay" by Michael Chabon) is amazing.

More of job interviews...

So this week I finally had a real job interview. Last week I received a phone call from a local company, and after a 20 minute conversation, they said they'd call if they wanted to invite me in for an interview. They did so, and yesterday I had that interview.

The interview itself went very well, and after it, they asked me to e-mail them a brief letter about the interview, as a way of looking at my writing style. I was surprised by that, but it made sense. It was kind of fun to have an assignment and deadline again... I got so used to that aspect of life in school... in a weird way, I miss it.

Today, they called me back again, and I have a second interview tomorrow. Will this lead to anything? I don't know, but I hope so. The company seems good, the work seems interesting, and I'd be able to stay in Bellingham. Needless to say, I want this job.

The interview is at 1:30 tomorrow, so please pray that it goes well. I'll keep the story updated.

Of Job Interviews...

So I didn't post about fall camp. Oops.

So I haven't posted in three weeks. Oops again.

Anyway, fall camp was really good, and there was plenty of stuff worth blogging about. But I'm not really inclined to do so this long after the fact. I will mention that doing my lecture in front of 90 students (as opposed to 30 or less--usually less--during the summer) was quite cool.

Anyway, my subject today is job interviews, as the title might suggest. Those who have talked to me recently (or can read between the lines on my all too infrequent entries here) will know that I've unsuccessfully looking for a job for a few months. The other day, I finally got an interview offer. Unfortunately, it was for a somewhat vague job offer that I had applied to only on a whim.

The interview was with a marketing firm, and figuring that such a job might involve some interesting creative work, I decided to go yesterday to the "preliminary interview" (an ominous term, as it implies a series of interviews), even though it meant a drive of two hours each way.

The drive ended up being longer, due to traffic and getting slightly lost on the way there. The interview itself was disappointingly brief (about 15 minutes), and it was pretty clear that they hadn't even read the resume included in the online application. Meaning the preliminary interview is offered to everyone. Oh joy.

It was also clear the interview could have easily been done over the phone (or even in e-mail, given the lack of content involved). No doubt the real purpose of the interview is to judge by impressions of the actual face-to-face encounter. I suppose that makes sense. Still... well, I don't care about the driving time (I had an audio book to listen to), but the $20 worth of gas... ouch.

I'm not sure whether they'll offer me a second interview, but I've decided not to take it even if they do. In the end, the job isn't really what I want to do, and I'm going to hold out for some kind of writing job, even if takes longer.

And hopefully I can afford to let it take longer, as I'm applying for some temp work to pay the bills. In fact, I have an interview concerning that today (notice the title of this entry referred to "interviews"). This interview will be more fruitful, I hope. And it's only a 10 minute drive. Much better.
