  • Straw Poll Results: Romney Wins, T. Thompson Quits Race

Tommy Thompson As expected, Saturday's straw poll in Ames, Iowa, went decidely in favor of Mitt Romney.  The former Massachusetts Governor, who spent roughly 2-3 million dollars on the event, placed first with 31% of the vote.  Here are the actual figures for all of the candidates:

    1. Mitt Romney - 4516 votes - 31%
    2. Mike Huckabee - 2587 votes - 18.1%
    3. Sam Brownback - 2192 votes – 15.3%
    4.Tom Tancredo - 1961 votes – 13.7%
    5. Ron Paul - 1305 votes – 9.1%
    6. Tommy Thompson - 1,009 votes - 7.3%
    7. Fred Thomson with 231 votes (did not participate)
    8. Rudy Giuliani with 183 votes (did not participate)
    9. Duncan Hunter with 174 votes
    10. John McCain with 101 votes (did not participate)
    11. John Cox with 41 votes

As you can see, my predictions last Friday were well off the final results.  Mike Huckabee turned in an impressive performance when you consider that he spent very little on the race.  Both Romney and Brownback spent a ton for their numbers.  Tancredo, who has been mediocre at best in the debates, turned out a surprising performance.

The straw poll event can be seen as a way to weed out some of the lesser candidates.  In one instance, already, this turned out to be true.  With news that he placed sixth in the poll, former four-term Wisconsin Governor, Tommy Thompson has announced his exit from the race.  Thompson joins former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore, who is positioning himself to run for Sen. John Warner's (R-VA) seat should he retire, on the sidelines.  In addition, this straw poll will probably prompt an exit from California Rep. Duncan Hunter.

It will be interesting to see what kind of momentum Huckabee and Brownback get from the event.  Huckabee particularly is in desperate need of an increased cash flow.
