| Cameras...Hasselblad vs PhaseOne
When Hasselblad first closed their system out from other Digital Back manufacturers... I thought the head honchos at Hassie had gone insane!
But as time progresses... it seems Hasselblad's move to become a closed system was a smart one...
It's like Apple computers... by being a closed system in terms of hardware... everything can be controlled inhouse and better quality gear is produced.
So we just purchased a Hasselblad H3DII 39 megapixel Multi Shot camera... and I must say of all the camera equipment, film, digital, scan backs... I have never in my life seen such high quality images.
The camera and digital back are matched for ultra precise placement of the focal plane... allowing for maximum sharpness. The new "Phocus" software automatically processes out chromatic aberration, vignetting, distortion... I mean everything that could possibly be wrong with a lens design... all on the fly...
With the advent of the new Hasselblad H3DII 50 megapixel camera... I'm curious to see what PhaseONE's move will be... being that Mamiya lenses can't resolve enough detail to fill out a 50 megapixel sensor... (and I personally wonder if they can even resolve out a 39 megapixel sensor as they do with P45+ backs)
I wonder if Hasselblad will take PhaseONE's market share of digital backs... (PhaseONE is the current leader and probably has like 50-60% of the market share)
Prediction: If PhaseOne doesn't fire back hard and find a great lens producer... they will be out of business within half a decade.
Nikon vs Canon
For small format, I've been a Canon shooter since 1993. I've shot with just about every Canon camera that has appeared since then... I've also shot or tested my share of Nikon equipment.
I always felt the Nikon vs Canon wars were silly simply because I cared solely about the quality of the lenses that went in front of the camera bodies... and it took a level of retardation not to see that Canon was superior.
In the 90s... it was simple, Nikon simply could not compete with Canon because of Image stabilization... or what Nikon now calls Vibration Reduction... and because of Canon's much more extensive electronic lens line along with high end optics.
Canon after all owned the patents to the system and made Nikon pay and arm and leg to introduce VR to their lenses... not to mention Canon grows its own crystal and low dispersion glass to put in its lenses... total quality control.
During the days of film, it was simple, Canon glass was vastly superior to that of Nikon for "most" applications.... however.... I always felt like Nikon's were designed by people that actually shoot pictures and know what they want... whereras I felt Canon's were designed by engineers that never shot their cameras outside of a controlled studio environment....
But since all I cared about was the ultimate image quality... which was a direct result of the lens and nothing to do with the camera body... Canon was my choice...
With digital... it all changed... sort of.... suddenly the camera body was important... where before I could own a few high end lenses and then drop my favorite film into the camera... now the camera became the film... oh my... so important...
Canon comes in and "revolutionizes digital". From the advent of digital photography until about a year ago... Nikon simply wasn't able to compete with Canon.
Now mind you, I speak only of professional grade equipment... in terms of your consumer DSLRs... I really don't think there's much of any difference between Canon or Nikon... or Pentax and Sony(Minolta) for that matter.
Every time Nikon attempted to come out with something decent... Canon trounced all over Nikon... to the Nikon fans of then that defended Nikon as if it were their child I said, "get over it."
So the Canon 1Ds Mk III comes out... 21 megapixel wonder...
Having shot the 1Ds Mk II (16.7 megapixel) extensively... I was truly excited about the Mk III having been released...
Excited and ready to plop down the needed $8,000 entry fee I decided to rent it first... JUST in case Canon didn't hit a home run...
Boy... I'm glad I rented... DISSAPOINTMENT... its the same noisy file the 1Ds Mk II creates just.... BIGGER...
So in Comes the Nikon D3... 12.1 megapixels... is that a joke?
Or so I thought... until I shot it... the images were cleaner and held up to just as much upres as the Canon 1Ds mkII... except suddenly I could shoot at ISO 6400... or 25000 even!
25000!!!! I don't care that it's chunky and can only be used in B+W but COME ON... 25000?!
Ok Ok... so Nikon's sensor image quality had finally reached a level I could be excited about... in a body seemingly designed by a team of photographers not engineers... I think Nikon may have surpassed Canon in image quality... not to mention usability and flexibility...
But... Nikon glass... OH NO!!! The lenses... had Nikon finally stepped up its game in the glass category...
So I tested the new 14-24mm S lens... 24-70mm S lens... and semi recent 70-200mm VR lens...
My conclusion...
Photokina September 2008... Canon had better have one heck of a response to what Nikon is doing this year... or I can see droves of professionals and amateurs alike switching systems...

| My Fiance“

I have spent so much of my fine art career attempting to capture the landscape as I saw it in my mind's eye... never had i envisioned what a person would look like through that same eye until I met her... my future...
| SHE SAID YES!!!I'm getting married!!!
A picture of us on our first date! ;) Does anyone else think it's weird that I took a picture of us on our first date? (The photographers on here would probably understand) haha At least she was a good sport!
And the RING!
Engagement Story to Follow! ;)
| SouthWest Trip, Again....Merry Christmas to all! :)
I'm off on a trip through the Southwest again... trying to capture those luminous moments... except this time... my future wife will be heading out with me. WOOHOO ;)
Hmm... i can see some of the comments I'll be getting from certain people...
Yes, I'm getting married!
| Big Sur Waves in COLOR!!!

I know many of you have seen the black and white rendition of this image, but here it is original glorious color form. I personally think the image is more dramatic and compelling printed black and white on metallic based papers but I do also like the image in color.
On another note... just purchased a computer of my dreams! Those of you out there that can be a dorky as me... let me give you the specs...
Mac Pro 3 Ghz 8 Core Clovertown 9 - Gigs of ECC Ram... soon to be 16 Gigs 4 - 500gb Seagate 7200.11 drives setup as two striped arrays. Radeon 1900XT card 512mb 23" Apple Cinema Display
Soon I'll be adding a RAID NAS External Setup with hot swappable drives, either a Lacie or Eizo 24" monitor... and of course a Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound system...
Wow I'm such a dork. :) | | |
