  • A Beautiful Story That Never Gets Old

There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, "Father, give me my share of the estate."  So he divided his property between them.

Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

When he came to his senses, he said, "How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!  I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.  I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men." So he got up and went to his father.

But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

The son said to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son."

But the father said to his servants, "Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate.  For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found." So they began to celebrate.

Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. "Your brother has come," he replied, "and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound."

The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, "Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!"

"My son," the father said, "you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found."

  • Adventures in Square Foot Gardening, Part 4~ Video Edition

Here are two videos that might give you some idea of what I am working with.

Sorry there are no still photos- remember my camera is still in Marietta, 100 miles away, until we go to the pool party next weekend.

(EDIT:  I guess if you can see the video component on your screen, you get 4 stills from the video...maybe that will help you if you have dial up [Anna] and can't watch video!)

    The cucumbers...

    And the garden in general...

  • Adventures in Square Foot Gardening, Part 3

    We've got cucumbers & peas!!!

We harvested the first of the veggies yesterday.  Again, I wish we had the camera to take pictures, but those pickling cukes are about 4-5 inches in diameter and about 6-8 inches long!  Whoo-Hoo!  I am getting about 4-5 peas per pod, and so far I've gotten about 20 pods.  The peas aren't plentiful, but again, this is the trial year, and it looks like I will do peas again next year since they did so well.

I stopped at the Andersons this morning and got some Mason jars and pickling salt this morning so we can start pickling the cukes.  This excites Greg much more than me since I don't like pickles, but it is fun to be able to see the fruit of your labors manifested in something organic & yummy for your family.

The silks are starting on the corn, so in about a week or 2 we'll have our corn in.  The canteloupe are starting to form on their vines, and the tomatoes are huge but still green.  My basil & potatoes are coming along well for having been started so late in the season, and my lone onion looks great.  The carrots are big & bushy.  I could probably start pulling them as well, but I haven't started.  The catnip is ready to trim & dry.  (That should make me popular!)

The failures this year are spinach, lettuce, peppers, & broccoli.  I hear those are hard to start from seeds anyway, so next year I might try to buy the plants and work from that.

Yippee!!  I never thought I would enjoy gardening so much, but I have to admit, following the directions in the book really worked.  Anything will grow in that soil mix!

  • Anyone Want a Three (and a Half) Year Old Boy?

I'm just joking, of course.  I have to say that before someone calls Children's Services on me.  [Thinking to self:  I DO love my child.  He is a miracle.  He's just going through a phase.  Yes, I DO want more kids.]

My life this week has been dealing with whining, crying, fevers, achiness, brattiness, and today, Michael displayed his ability to unbuckle his seat belt and climb out of his booster seat while I am driving FOUR times.  Seeing as I didn't want to get seen by the cops and get fined for him not being in his seat, and obviously the safety factor, I had to pull over on an already busy day and 1) spank him for not obeying, 2) put him back in his seat and rebuckle him in, and 3) tell him each time NOT to do it again.  Then he laughs at me.  He doesn't pull this crap on his dad...or anyone else, come to think of it.

I've had it.  Thank GOODNESS tomorrow is Friday, which will be play time for him while I have Bible Study with Carrie's sister & her neighbor (and maybe Carrie).  Saturday is Daddy day...and I need a break!

I filmed my garden today and will need to upload it soon.  (My camera is still down home and will be until the end of the month.)  Question:  Should my corn be over 6 feet tall already?  Because it is.
