Every day after school, as soon as he gets in the door, Benji takes off all his clothing, except for his underwear.  It he wants to go out later, to play with a friend or ride his scooter, he'll re-dress.  But soon as he's back inside, bye-bye to clothing.

His feet get a little chilly, but he's such a warm blooded critter.  He never seems to get cold.

Benji's big day went incredibly well.  He was so much less nervous than I was.  I promised myself I wouldn't cry, but just as he was getting on the "big bus," he turned around and looked back at me, and for the first time, he had fear on his face.  And I waivered.  I believe he thought I was getting on with him.  I used to always get on the van with him each morning because I had to help him get settled into his booster seat and hooked up in the belt.

So I was weepy after he left, but it went well.  Last night we took him to purchase some new clothing (great bargains on t-shirts, shorts and long pants at K-mart!) and out for dinner at Texas Roadhouse.

This morning, he was up and waiting for me!

I tossed and turned all night.  Today Benji starts 2nd grade!  I can't believe he'll be riding a "big" bus and is being mainstreamed.  It's been my dream, but I'm really worried for him.  I got a phone call (a personal call!) from a school district representative last night saying he'll be met at the bus at school and helped along the way.  It's every parents' dream to have their child treated so specially.

He'll also be riding the bus with his best friend, Katie.  I am happy, nervous, thrilled, sick, etc.  I think I'll post more after school when I'm not so freaked.

No news for the past five months (ack!) really has been good news.  Benji is going to be mainstreamed next year.  He'll attend second grade most of the day with a "normal" bunch of children here in our town (thank heavens... no more long rides on the short van).  He'll only step out of the classroom to go to Learning Support for Language Arts, mostly because he still has some problems with comprehension.

Our next big adventure is a trip to the dentist on May 26.

I'm so ashamed that it's been five months since I last made an entry.  No news really is good news.  Benji is in 1st Grade and doing incredibly well.  He is still in the IU autism support classroom, but spends 2/3 to 4/5 of his day in the "normal" 1st grade classroom.

Santa was good to Benji.  He got a Leap Pad and a new scooter, a Lite Brite and slot cars.  I think his favorite gift came from my dad and his wife, who got him a marble fall.
