A God You Cannot Satisfy, A Law You Cannot Keep...

I have tried diligently to preach God as He really is, to sinners as they really are, and to exalt the Lord Jesus Christ as the only Mediator between the holy God and sinful men, the all-glorious Redeemer who accomplished, by Himself, the reconciliation of His people (II Cor. 5:18-21). I have tried, and shall continue to do so, to preach to you:

A God you cannot satisfy,
A law you cannot keep,
An obedience you cannot produce,
A righteousness you cannot produce,
A love you cannot give,
Sin you cannot get rid of,
A judgment you cannot endure,
A repentance you cannot produce,
A faith which God alone can give,
But ... a Christ who fully satisfied God for sinners and who freely saves the vilest of sinners. I urge you to look to Him, believe Him, trust Him, and confidently commit your guilty soul unto Him. Simply hug up to Him in childlike faith and trust, and all will be well with your soul. In Him there is no condemnation.

What! not a word from the compassionate Saviour, who is touched with a feeling of our infirmities? Is he deaf to the cries and dumb to the entreaties of a distressed, sorrowful heart? No: love in the heart has always an ear open to complaints, a tongue ready to speak comfort, and a kind hand to relieve. But love afflicts, to bring his children to him, and make them call upon him: he forbears to answer, that they may be the more importunate. God's delays prove faith's vigor, make love cling closer, prayer more fervent, and patience shine brighter. By these means the graces of God's children are drawn forth into lively exercise, and are made manifest that they are wrought by God. Perseverance obtains the blessing in due time. Jesus honors and applauds the grace of his beloved members with, O man, O woman, great is thy faith!
Christ well knew what work he had wrought in this poor humble supplicant's heart, whereby she knew Jesus to be Lord and God; therefore he proved her, and tried her, that her faith might shine brighter to his glory and her soul's comfort. As she possessed the same faith, so she discovers the same resolution as Job, "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him." Job 13:15. And, with Jacob, she would wrestle, and her heart determined, "I will not let thee go except thou bless me." Genesis 32:26.
But the silence of Jesus was very disheartening; when he spake, it was quite discouraging. Though she worshipped him, and sighed out, "Lord, help me;" yet Jesus seems rather to repulse than comfort her. But true faith ever sinks the soul low in humility, while it clings close to the most high God. The soul owns its vileness and utter unworthiness, and fixes all its plea upon mere mercy, all its hopes upon Jesus only. Thus Christ empties whom he delights to fill. He makes us see and confess ourselves to be dogs, fit only to feed under the table; though he loves us as children, and all that he hath is ours by free gift, precious promise, and rich grace. Thou poor, fearing, doubting soul, who hast long been seeking, waiting, and praying for comfort by a word or look from Jesus, take courage. Ever trust in him who saith, "I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul." Jer. 31:25. Mark the result to this believing, importunate, waiting woman: "Be it unto thee, even as thou wilt," was the answer, replete with all comfort and joy. "The Lord is a God of judgment; blessed are all they who wait for him." Isaiah 30:18.

The sin of religions today and of the past is unbelief concerning the all-sufficiency of the Lord Jesus Christ in saving His people. All false religions, without exception, stumble at this and always add or take away something from Christ through their own doctrines, conditions or works. All those who are in false religions stumble at Christ. Believers struggle with this same unbelief daily and mourn but God delivers His people because He loves them and He delights in mercy.

Repentance is from God

God is all powerful and owns everything, even salvation. Salvation belongs to the Lord (Ps 3:8 ). And even a believer’s repentance belongs to God. Repentance is not stirred up within ourselves, it is only a condition granted or given by God (Acts 11:18 KJV), it is God’s will and work. There are none that seek after God (Ro.3:11) and no one seeks after repentance unless God grants or gives it. Repentance is granted only by God’s electing mercy and not worked up within ourselves by our own will, efforts or in our timing (Heb 12:16,17). God is feared and worshiped by His people when He reveals this to them. If we believe that we can enjoy sin today and repent tomorrow then we don’t know what repentance is nor do we know where it comes from and we don’t believe God. It is the goodness of God that leads us to repentance (Rom 2:4).

-God is all powerful and fulfills His purpose of saving the people He has chosen by His will. Salvation is not given when we "accept Jesus as a personal Savior“. Salvation is not by our will or acceptance. Salvation is given by God only to the elect. And salvation is shown when God gives them a new heart and mind to know Him as Lord and King. And when God gives salvation to the elect they bow down to their Lord and King. False religion says that you are to “make Jesus Lord of your life”. But He already is Lord and King over the saved and unsaved. Man can’t decide or have the power to make Him Lord. Man can’t decide on his own will to be saved, salvation is only by God’s will. And only in His timing does He reveal Himself to His Elect as Lord and Savior.

-God is very merciful and gracious and His salvation is free without us having to pay for it by works. We don't serve or do works for the Lord "to be" forgiven or saved, we serve the Lord because we "are" forgiven and saved.

-True worship is to agree with and repeat back to God (and others) every glorious truth He says about Himself and His Son and every humbling truth about ourselves and our sinful condition.

-Only God is Good (Mat19:17). Did my goodness get me saved?. No. It was the goodness of God that lead me to repentance ( Rom 2:4).

-Those who trust in their own "good works" for salvation believe that God owes them something. They think that their salvation is dependant upon their works and they do not want God's grace. They see God as debtor and not as a merciful Savior. They may use God's name and do works but He does not know them (Mat 7:21-23).

Some more thoughts....

-Many know God as the creator and call Him God but few know Him as Savior. Many know about the works of God but believers also know the ways of God.

-The gospel is not about what man does for God but what God has done by the Lord Jesus Christ in glorify Himself in saving His people.
