| | For a few days I wasn't sure if I was going to get into the Christmas "mood." Having had some of our Christmas day activities on Thanksgiving day with our assembled family, it seemed as though "the day" had come and gone. With all of our family going to be somewhere else on Christmas the season took on a kind of flat, black-and-white appearance. This made me very aware of how much has encroached on my "feel" for the "Reason for the season."
So, three things have helped to jump start my celebration of the arrival of the month of December.
First - a renewed focus on the fact that it is about Jesus Christ and not about our cultural trappings.
Second - having adjusted that focus, some of the familiar personal traditions began to take on renewed importance. Last night the Music Teacher and I discovered a DVD of the classic Alistair Sims interpretation of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." It is, I believe, a healthy reminder that God is about people. I watched this movie often on television as a child (it came out in 1951) and then renewed my acquaintance with it a few years back when we found it on video. Now this DVD brings a better quality to the old film and it is color enhanced. So, last night and watched the movie. A fire place crackled to one side. Together we sipped hot spiced cider. Good times.
Third - there is snow on the ground and in the air outside my office window. I have started playing my Christmas tapes as I work. I'm good for both until January 2nd. Then I will be ready for crocuses and Easter songs.
