| Did you feel it rollin'? Yes, we had an earthquake last night---our kid's first real earthquake. It really wasn't much of an event--they usually aren;'t--but a couple of news stations preempted programs for non-stop coverage of the "quake". Oh, brother! Here's the link to our quake: http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/Quakes/nc40204628.htm
Thankfully, we just felt the long rolling action. At first I thought I was dizzy, then I saw our chandelier swaying and I knew it was a quake. My son didn't even realize we were having one until I pointed out the swaying lights. So, no biggie, just a little "land surfing".
| Click it or Ticket---ouch!
I'm glad the "Click it or Ticket" campaign is finally over----and they got us! Every morning as I would drive the kids to school, we would hear about it on the radio and/or see the extra police on the side of the road watching. So, last Thursday when I woke up with a horrible sinus headache and Dan took the kids to school for me on his way to work, it didn't occur to me to warn him...Unfortunately, they were in a hurry and my son was still putting his shoes on in the front seat when they got pulled over just one block from our house! I dread seeing the price of the ticket---I just saw on the news that it could be as high as $330 for a child without a seat belt.OUCH! Alex is going to pay half the ticket cost to help him remember to buckle up, even close to home. When I got into my one injury-accident I had just pulled out of a parallel parking space when I saw an opportunity to cross a busy street----except that I got hit immediately by a car that I couldn't see. Because I hadn't yet put my seat belt on (this was the early 80's and it was not as common then to use seat belts), I was thrown across the car and hit my head on the passenger door, where the shattered glass fell all over me and I was knocking glass fragments out of my ear and hair the rest of the day. Does anybody else remember a "Buckle Up" song that used to be on TV in the 70's? I can only remember two lines from it, but I have sung those two lines to my kids since they got out of their car seats: "Buckle up for safety/Buckle up. Buckle up for safety/we all buckle up.repeat." Have a safe day!
| Whatever works... Good thing Gracie's not around to see me laugh at what she put into one wash load. If she's OK with it, I'm OK with it! I love my extra-large capacity washer & dryer, and apparently its coming in handy for the kids. Teaching the kids (ages 13 & 15) has been an ongoing process, starting last school year with their simplist loads. But, I have to laugh at what I found after I offered to get my 13yo DD's load from the dryer tonight:
- Bathrobe
- Twin sheet set
- Beach towel
- Bath towel
- Wool blend sweater (she shrunk it months ago and likes it better this way. LOL)
- in addition, all of her light colored shirts, undies, socks, pants.
Hey, whatever works! | | |
| DH baptizes our son I enjoyed Jonzilla's entry about her kids so much that I'm going to go ahead and share a wonderful moment from my family: our son was baptized. Our dd was baptized last year and it was wonderful and a joyous occasion, but this hit me differently for some reason---I was so moved by him. Alex's desire to be baptized in this church by his dad was so genuine and it was so very important to him. And, he asked to give his testimony in "big church". Awwwww! The way we handle Baptism is that before the actual baptism the baptee has to publicly share his testimony and his reason for being baptized. They have the option to give it to their baptism class (small group), or students can give it to their HS or MS group, or in the Worship service the day of the dunking. Out of 10 HS students, 6 MS students and 7 or 8 adults baptized that day, Alex was the only one giving his testimony in the 1st service on Sunday morning! This is part of what really got me: when the HS pastor introduced him, the whole church clapped when Jay said Alex's name. Then, all 220 lbs. of this 15yr old, long-haired hulk of a boy walked up calmly and confidently shared his love for our Savior that went beyond his parents faith and made it his own. I couldn't stop smiling or crying!!
Left to right: Jay, our HS Pastor; Alex, and Dan, my dh. We do our baptism services at the local lake--its very small and the water is disgusting, but we have a picnic and really celebrate as a church. What a great day! Here is a pic of my son & his best friend, waiting in line to be baptized. Best friends since they crawled around together while their moms did MOPS, VBS, etc. together, also becoming best friends in the process.
