As if I haven't been redundant enough...
The accident that changed my life...
The story is long I know..but its ALL TRUE. I still can't really sleep because I just keep seeing it in my head over and over and over...
On Sunday, September 25th 2005, Cameron, his sister and I were driving down a windy mountain road, on our way back from the beach to Portland, Oregon. The road was dangerous--only one lane going in each direction and enough twists and turns to make you nauseous. It had been a long day, so we were driving pretty slow (only about 40-45mph) about 2 or 3 car lengths behind a little RV Camper, which was following a tiny bronze Geo Prism. I remember this so well, because we were behind them for almost 45 minutes and they looked like a two-pack, being so close together.
As we came around a bend, we suddenly saw a grey Ford F-150 pick-up truck, going at least 80-90mph, completely in our lane going the opposite direction. My heart stopped. The truck was rocking from right to left, it was going so incredibly fast...and it ran head-on straight into the tiny little car infront of the RV. The car had no chance, upon impact it compacted about 1/3 its size and flew straight over the RV in a massive collision, and landed about 10 feet away from us. The RV, the truck and the little car were all airborne in the air for about 1.5 seconds as the truck slid on its side and landed behind the RV, cracking the RV open before it hit the ground...
If Cameron hadn't started slowing down as he saw the grey truck in the wrong lane heading straight for us...If there had been a car right behind us, without time to stop...
We got out of the car in panic. All I could hear was a little girl's piercing scream coming from the RV. Hearing it almost made me pass out. There was smoke everywhere. The little car to the left of us looked like a pile of metal...both people in it were dead. Never in my life have I seen somebody die right before my eyes. SOMEBODY CALL 911! Oh my god, there was no reception anywhere. All our cellphones had no signal at all. What were we supposed to do? We had to move the car! There was debree everywhere, including underneath our car. To avoid any explosions, which could affect us we moved the car and went to check on the people in the RV. The two 23 year-old girls in the little bronze Geo Prism never had a chance.
There were 6 other people in the RV...two 15 year-old girls had been sleeping upstairs in the little bunker above the driver and upon impact, the top had split open and both girls had been thrown out while the RV was still in the air...as it came back down it rolled over their hair trapping them underneath. The driver of the RV was in complete shock. He had NO IDEA what had just happened. He looked confused as he asked: "Where did that little car come from?" His questions shook me up. Didn't he realize that little car had been infront of him? 3 more people were trapped inside the RV and the firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to get them out...
Thank God there was a house right by the accident scene...they called 911 and considering we were about 45 minutes into a one way road, they were the quick...
But the 18 year-old kid, who had caused the accident? He got out of his truck in 2 seconds flat. He was simply bleeding from a little gash on his forehead...he walked straight from his car to the grassy area on the other side and laid down...He was completely fine...
The three of us are the only witnesses in this case. The kid is blaming the little car even though he was in the wrong lane...we might have to go to court in a couple months to give our statements...the nightmare goes on...
This experience taught me that life is short...you truly don't understand the meaning of life until you see somebody else's disappear right infront of you. I'm not trying to be philosophical or intellectual...all I'm asking is that you take my experience to heart. Please be safe out there...one stupid mistake might change your life forever.
If you won't be safe for yourself...at least be safe for those who love you.
If you got this far, thanks for reading me... Sending much much love your way..
