Match Report

The French side dominated the first half

Robinho sparked Real Madrid¡¦s attack at Stade de Gerland. The new Brazilian striker won two free-kicks in the early stage but Beckham and Roberto Carlos missed the target respectively. Lyon broke the deadlock in the 21st minute. Carew deflected P. Juninho¡¦s re-taken free-kick into the net. A powerful 40-yard free-kick from Juninho in the 26th minute extended Lyon's lead. The sloppy defense of Real Madrid gave enough space to Wiltord meeting Reveillere¡¦s cross in the 31st minute to make it 3-0. Lyon was granted a penalty kick four minutes before the half time after Juninho was tripped by Sargado in the box but Iker Casillas saved the spot-kick from Juninho.

Coupet secured a clear sheet for Lyon

Real Madrid tried to pull back a goal after the break. However, lack of co-operation and monotone central penetration limited the shots of the Spanish giant outside the penalty area. Steady performance of Coupet kept Real Madrid from the score line. A nice pass from Robinho in the 60th minute found Raul into the penalty area but Coupet denied Raul¡¦s attempt. Guti was in to bring some fluency and efficiency in the attack of his side. Three minutes before Guti missed the chance to turn Coupet¡¦s only mistake into a goal, Juninho nearly scored his second goal in a counter-attack in the 62nd minute. Iker Casillas gave a great save to Juninho¡¦s close range shot. The game ended goalless in the second half. Without much pressue, Houllier celebrated his first Champions League victory with his boys after one-year leave in coaching position.
