| a letter to JasonDear Jason,
You've been on my mind quite a bit lately, especially yesterday, August 25th, your birthday. I've thought about all the good times we'd had so long ago: times at school events, hanging out our houses playing Atari, cruising the neighborhood on our bikes, etc. Those precious memories are all that I have left, so I guess that they will have to do.
I just pulled out our senior high school annual. In it, your bio read: Jason Velasquez - Jason had a quiet humor, as the shortest guy in the class. He plans to pursue a career as a physical trainer after attending Southwest Texas or The University of Texas. It saddens me to know that you never were able to fulfill your ambitions.
I'm so sorry that we lost touch after high school. I know it happens to a lot of people, but I really didn't expect it to happen to you and me. Growing up across the street from one another for almost a decade, being in the same classes, doing the same extracurricular activities, playing tennis together, I guess I never thought it would end, but time and life can push people in different directions. It was no different for us.
This afternoon I saw a movie that made me think of you again: Quinceañera. It was a movie that touched me on several levels. There was nothing in the plot that mirrored anything in our lives growing up, but there was this innate essence of several characters that just took me back to our childhood days: climbing the big Oak tree in my front yard, beating the hell out of that piñata in your backyard on your 10th birthday, teasing your younger sister Cathy, and celebrating at our high school graduation. Even though the movie had a mostly happy ending, when I got home from the theater, I shed a few tears. Of all the characters, I guess you were most like Tio Tomas: never judging anyone and loved by everyone.
I'll never forget the day when I got the call. It was my Mom who'd phoned. When she told me what happened, I just sat there in my chair, stunned in disbelief. I said nothing. My Mom repeated my name several times before I responded. I said, "I heard you."
She replied back, "Mrs. Velasquez would like you to be a pallbearer."
I said, "Of course. When is the funeral?"
"On Saturday, the day after tomorrow."
"I'll be home Friday evening, then."
I think that if you were still among us today, we'd have reconnected and renewed our friendship. I'm sure by now, I would've come out to you, and you'd have had no problem with me being gay. You were just that kind of person. Of all the people on this earth, I still wonder why it was your time when you were taken from us. That will be an answer none of us will ever understand.
It's been more than 15 years since your death, and I have yet to visit your grave since you were buried. The next time I'm in Flatonia, in a couple of weeks, I promise I will. Mas vale tarde que nunca. Te extraño tanto.
Siempre tu hermano, Chris | | |
| Massive update!!! The month of December just seemed to fly
by! I even was on vacation from 12/23 - 1/3, and it seemed to go
by so quickly. So my "dream job" has been getting on my nerves
lately. So tired of the bull
sh!t from my manager and other employees from other
departments... Our volume has doubled, but we've cut our staff by
1.5 people. You do the math! So I've started a new job
search, and put in some applications right near the end of the
year. I haven't heard anything back yet, but I expect as much
since everybody is getting back in the swing of things this week.
On 12/23, I came down with a nasty head cold. More of an
annoyance really, but it sucked because that was my last day at work,
and somewhat dampened my mood for Christmas. Speaking of which, I
went back to my hometown on the evening of the 23rd and returned back
to Houston on 12/27.
At that point, I decided to spruce up the house a bit for 2006, and do
a little painting in my living room and one wall in the master
bedroom. Actually, I did some faux finishing to be exact. You can check it out. I'm really pleased with how things turned out.

And last, but certainly not least...
The
University of Texas Longhorns are NATIONAL CHAMPIONS AGAIN, after the
improbable, yet dynamic comeback over USC in the fourth quarter of the
Rose Bowl.

Vince: Get your degree, come back for 1 more run, help UT repeat history and win the Heisman!
