  • Tokyo, NYC

We found a little bit of Tokyo, or my imagination of what the real Tokyo, Japan would be like, in New York City! Before we headed to the Notorious MSG concert at The Knitting Factory in Tribeca, we stopped for drinks at Tokyo Bar

I had been transported to Tokyo, like a scene in Lost in Translation. Only in decor form, but in ambience-- unlike the real Tokyo (which I notice from Anthony Bourdain's trips is very crowded and busy at all hours of the night) this restaurant was lacking the swarms of young Japanese hipsters ordering rounds of drinks and gayly enjoying the food and music with their friends on a Saturday night.

Your ears will notice the DJ is spinning all the greatest hits (ie. Michael Jackson Thriller days), your eyes will see the bright neon colors lit against the black and white comic backdrop that is wallpapered throughout the entire restaurant from walls to ceilings. The speakeasy bar style serves up great drinks, such as this frozen lychee that your tongue will keep thirsting for.  There are other house specialty drinks too so ask! And last but not least, your stomach will be curious for the abundant amount of food the oversized menus offer-- think fried oysters, sake clams, interesting sushi rolls. One and I already had dinner but couldn't resist trying something. He ordered the mix of steamed mushrooms which were very very good. The verdict from friends that ordered food was two thumbs up!

What I loved about the bar, and maybe it was because we were one group out of 3, was the attention to detail the bartender would have in making each drink-- placing that mint just perrrrrrfectly against the white lychee in the white frozen liquid inside the tumbler just so that it wouldn't be missed.

If you are in the neighborhood, or want to get a dose of that Tokyo, Japan in NYC, and am tired of the usual suspects on St. Marks, put this spot on your list. My next trip will include dinner!

Note: After reading this artcile on NYMAG- I learned the owners are from one of my other favorite Japanese Speakeasy joints- Angel Share.  They also have another bar downstairs from Tokyo Bar called, B Flat which I am itching to try next! How ironic because it was one of the restaurants that I was researching to go that Saturday night, and although we didn't go I guess it was destiny that lead me there anyways-- or near it.  I realized this when a friend had gone out for a smoke break and came back in with a business card of "B Flat". Funny.

PS: The concert was awesome and hilarious!  A good time was had by all! YOUTUBE the group Notorious MSG when you have a chance.  It was something different for our Saturday night, definitely.  The only downer was that the A.C. was apparently not working! It was insanely hot. (Especially when they took their shirts off!)

  • Men and Shopping

This past weekend, One and I went shopping in SOHO (the usual) at Opening Ceremony.  This is one of my favorite stores, not only for the great goods they offer at steep prices  but the inspiration you can find just being there.  One was on the hunt for shoes so as he was trying on his stuff, I decided to sneak away myself.

I tried on these fabulous peep toe booties for Fall in Black Suede and paraded in front of One to get his opinion.  It's funny because ladies love to get their significant other's opinion on fashion, but most of the time, men are either ambivalent, too conservative, or confused as to why we want what we want and wear what we do! And even after this, we continue to do it for the sheer pleasure I guess of involving them in our choices.  For me, I also like to just get their opinion (because it's enlightening), although inside I already know positive or negative, if I want it, I'll have it.

One's initial comments with the facial expression: "Confused" :

"Those look like really long socks... No?"

"Won't your toes get cold in the winter?"

"What would you wear with that?"

I just looked at the sales man and said, "He won't always understand my fashion choices at first, but trust me, when I wear it out complete, he will."

*EDIT* I decided not to buy them because I'm not ready yet. I want to see what else is out there for this fall. But definitely, the peep toe booties style are a Must.

In other news, Welcome to the End of Wall Street and the World.  It's too much to even delve into and too depressing watching our economy deteriorate at rapid pace now.

  • Sincerely, "Still Hopeful" from NYC

My friend invited me to her father's birthday/new office celebration in the heart of Tribeca.  There was food galore, which you kno me, I was there, but in the moment while I was chomping away, I took notice at the floor-through office space! This is an architectural firm where "offices" were sectioned by the bookcases and tables were grouped within each space encouraging team work and collaboration. The design was spacious even with all the piles of books lined up in library fashion.  I have a soft spot for books collections-it's intellectual and sexy at the same time.

We all gathered to sing happy birthday to her father, it was sweet to see her parents still in love, smiling, laughing, holding each other dear, and kissing.  It made me think of how when I turn 50, I pray to have that still! They looked beautiful, young, and vibrant.  Clearly the passion or adoration was still there.

This leads to the subject of Marriage.  Watching Housewives of Orange County (out of boredom) made me start to think about the fall out of marriages or the deflation.  How after many years, the passion fizzles and the couple just barely gets by. Then seeing how some people are so annoyed with their spouses, it's really pathetic and the only thing holding them together is the sheer bliss of independence b/c at this point they don't really even have regard for each other and stay together for the sake of their kids (not to mention divorce is so ugly and expensive!).  I've heard of other parents in real life being that way, and I can't fathom living or being with someone I could not stand.  I think if it was dying on me and we couldn't come to a middle ground on working things out, I would opt for a divorce.  Trust me, it would be the last resort- I'm all about marrying for all the right reasons (fundamentals which outlast the butterflies) and marrying a teammate and working it out as long as the other person is willing to keep working at it.  Even with the nastiness of failed marriages publicized, I'm the hopeless romantic that believes in a happy marriage with a lifelong companion.  I am just admitting I fear it at times.

Q: What are your thoughts about the longevity of passion/adoration/love in marraige? Would you get a divorce?

  • White Water Rafting

A group of friends and I got together for an adventurous weekend in Jim Thorpe Pennsylvania.  We rented a house (5 minutes from Poconos White Water) which turned out to be lovely! Granted, it's not the sexiest place or most modern, but it had that old school country charm which worked with my themed weekend of relaxation (when I'm not on the rapids) & country-folking. My only complaint on the house was our bed was not that comfortable- doable- but not comfortable. It did squeak a lot...which caused a lil more effort in trying to keep it from squeaking !

    summer08 059

Our check in time for the rapids were 9 AM.   After everyone got their gear on we waited to go through a short instructional class on process and safety. We were attempting Level 3 rapids.

    On the rapids:

Let me tell you, TEAM BUILDING is a great way to describe this activity.  At the beginning our team was shaky- and had a hard time communicating, especially in the moments when our adrenaline was pumping and we were stressed in getting out of the rapids! We also were not used to paddling so much so sometimes one side was lazier than the other, but that soon changed when we realized that the float was not moving in the directions we wanted. The inconsistent paddling led to major detours into rocks that caused us to panic!  We were supposed to stay calm and do what we learned in the instructional class to get off a rock (bounce! bounce). This scary incident escalated when other floats bumped us, letting in a rush of water inside our float.  We thought it was the end! Somehow we managed to free ourselves and spent the next 15 minutes scooping endlessly. I have a large bruise the size of my knee cap on my knee cap as a battle scar! Also, our first Captain was thrown off into the water during a fierce rapid.  Thank God we found our missing mate down the river later.  She was better suited as a side front paddler anyways.

     picture from weblinks

By understanding each person's role, we were able to propel through the final half of the rapids after lunch, dodging most of the rocks! We realized that the middle paddlers were the strongest so we placed our men there, and I was better at maneuvering the back Captain seat where I could watch both sides and use my paddle as needed deeper, slower, shorter, backwards, or forward.  We did so well that our team ended up finishing the trail FIRST! No, it wasn't a race, but why would you diddy daddle in the waters if you're doing well? You obviously want to keep moving forward!

During calm waters, we were able to enjoy the luscious mountains and hill tops.  All I wanted to do though after the rapids was take a nice clean shower! Our clothes and shoes smelled like dirty river/mud waters,, aka SHIT.  People were using the river as a toilet during lunch time in front of everyone!

    Breakfast/Brunch @ The Covered Dish

I assume this would be the "hot" spot to get breakfast with the locals because this was on the list of recommended spots for tourists. Greasy, very local, with long waits for your for eggs (I think they waited for the chickens to lay them).  Pretty interesting, but you will leave feeling guilty for eating lard. Not much to write, you can make your own assumptions.

When in Rome... Biscuits and Gravy with a side of home fries. $4 (love the price!) Amount of sit ups afterwards = 1 trillion.

    In the Kitchen this week...

Of course, I'm always keeping it simple and keeping it real in my kitchen because homegirl (me) has a career. My new snack I make for lunch or dinner!  Who can resist cool summer tomatoes and mozzerella!  It's also pretty filling, so it's a great substitute for those on low carb diets! The key to this dish is the dressing- I add in honey and a touch of pesto to the rice wine vinegar. Top off with salt and pepper.

    summer08 007

The colors in this pasta make it eye-candy! I used whole-wheat spaghetti pasta with yellow and red bell peppers, garlic, butter, shitake mushrooms, olives, and mushroom tomato sauce with ground turkey! You don't have to give up eating good food when you're eating healthy! My tip is just to replace each item to low fat... as best you can!

    summer08 009

Easy dessert idea: Bake some fruits (I used peaches and apples) and add your homemade sauce of brown sugar, butter, and apple sauce which has been stirring on the stove.  Final ingredient: Haagen DazsVanilla Yogurt (healthier than ice ceam!)

  • Postcard from Bali

     Dear friends and readers,

I have been away doing my side gig as a Rock Star, guitaring and jamming my hard superstar vocals on the beaches of Bali.  Internet has been limited and so has my time, but I just wanted to tell you all I miss you.

The beaches are great. I love to skinny dip and swim with the turtles.  They sometimes snap at my Brazilian bikini bottom (which I started to wear after the skinny dipping got dangerous), but other than that, the waters are fantastic!

Another large portion of my time is spent with the band groupies.  I'm so popular here because they think I'm famous in the States which of course is not the case because no one even knew I had a Rock Star band.  Before they catch me on here writing this, I must let you all go!

    Talk to you soon,

    Hoolaxrocks.

    The Truth:

I have taken a BREAK to regroup, regather, restructure myself.  Also, I have been stricken with Pink Eye (in both eyes) for almost 2 weeks now.  Lesson, don't get Pink Eye from your lover. XOXO.

Upcoming trip: White Water Rafting... to be continued.
