    Kai Turns Seven

Today was Kai's seventh birthday, so we threw him a little party with a couple of his friends.

    Sword fights!

    Ice cream cake!

                                                                                     "Who wants more?"

    Fruit by the foot!

    Crackers!

    One, two, three...                                                          POP!

    And presents!

    Including...

    I new Nintendo DS Lite!

Yeah, I know.  I'm courting disaster here...

After grilling hot dogs, we were able to roast marshmallows just before the rain came.

                                                                                       Oops!  Too much!

We topped the party off with a visit from Florida-Katy (Dixie representin' up in this hizzie!).

    Whew!  I'm tired.
I've just got to say here that the more I watch other Japanese kids, the more pleased I am with Kai's behavior.

  • Yet Another Great Japanese Product

I saw this ad for a male enhancement drug "for Asian" and nearly lost it.  Of course when you're advertising a male enhancement drug you simply must put a picture of a black man next to it.

"Yes, Shunsuke!  Now you too can be hung like a Black dude!"

I don't know if I should be amused or angry.  I mean sure, it's a pretty funny ad, but we're not all just huge phalli walking around here to fascinate these people.  There's more to us than that.  We have brains, talents, abilities and other attributes.  Plus, aren't they just perpetuating a myth.  I haven't done a survey on this subject, but I'm pretty sure we're not all swinging like horses.

Anyway, I especially love the consumer testimonials and women's preference survey on the second page.

Apparently, most women like 'em big.  Who'da thunk it?

I wonder how many suckers have bought into this...

...I also wonder what "BD" stands for.

  • Sports Day 2008

Today was Kai's first sports day as an elementary school student.

    An old Japanese tradition.

"Hey, Shunsuke Sensei.  We're going to have our students running around the dirtiest, dustiest part of the school all day.  What do you think they should wear?"

    "Ummm...all-white uniforms?"

    "Shunsuke Sensei,...you're a GENIUS!"

Amazingly, Kai kept his uniform virtually clean.

Synchronized dancing is a HUGE event at Japanese sports days.

Yeah, I know.  I've gotta get him out of this country.

    Relay race                                                                  ZOOOOOM!!!

Yep, fastest kid in his class.

    Other events

Ummm...pass the oversized ball down the line?

    Errr...toss the...uuhhh...bean bag into the basket-thingy?

    Synchronized...aaahhh...human pyramids?

At the end of the day, Kai's team won 650 to 560.  Yeah, that's right.  They rocked the other team to sleep!  In yo' faces, other little kids!!!  Stings, doesn't it!  U-S-A!  U-S-A!  U...
    ...Uh, I mean, W-H-I-T-E-T-E-A-M!  W-H-I-T-E-T-E-A-M!

All that really matters is that Kai had fun and felt good about himself.  That was the real victory of the day.

    Never Say Never

It's funny how you can end up doing some of the things you said you'd never do.  I guess it's true that we're constantly changing.  Our beliefs, circumstances and attitudes can all shift and morph, causing us to take another look at our personal set of rules.

There are things I said I'd never do, yet these ideals/plans just didn't match up with reality the way I wanted them to.  Here are just a few examples:

    - Live in a foreign country (visit, yes - live, no).
    - Tell my child "because I said so."
    - Miss a Sunday at church (unless it was an emergency - sickness, etc.).
    - Send my child to church (I would always go with him).
    - Play soccer.
    - Hold a grudge.

The longer I live in this country, the longer this list becomes...

What are some of the things you said you'd never do which turned out to be bogus?

    AHHH...Another Night at the Gym

I try to stay calm when I work out, but these people are ridiculous!

One old dude insists on walking around the gym and talking to people while he changes clothes.  He just stands there in his loose-fitting (read "ill-fitting") boxer/briefs chatting away.
Okay first of all, we have a locker room!  Use it!
Secondly, there are ladies in the gym.  I'm pretty sure they don't want to see this guy's droopy-crotch-undies.  I could be wrong, though.  Maybe I should take a survey.

Then, in come about 20 high school kids (without a coach!?  ) running about the gym and laughing at every silly thing they do:

"Oops!  I just dropped the 12kg bar because I can't lift it.  Tee hee hee!"

"Whoopsies!  I just slammed the lateral leg lift machine for ten straight reps.  Now it doesn't work!  *Guffaw*!"

*Sigh*  The things I'll endure for a hard body...

  • DOORS (Japanese Edition)

Angi wants doors, so doors she shall get.

First I must warn you, I don't have an eye for photography.  Plus, I took most of these pictures in about 15 minutes.  I just walked around the neighborhood surrounding my school snapping shots during my one break today (although one photo is from last fall in Okitsu).

None of these are all that spectacular or different, but I hope you enjoy them.

The door to a tomb.  Both beautiful and sad.
