  • This is the first Mother's Day....

This year, Mother's day is different.  It's the first since I found out my Mom had THREE girls, not two!

If you missed the excitement last month, my Mom finally got in touch with the girl she gave up almost 50 years ago, and shared her excitement with me and my sister, Dee.  We have been thrilled to be a part of getting to know our new sibling.  It could be a TV series:  Suddenly Sisters!

Every year, I realize more and more how amazing is this person who I used to think of as only my Mom.  When she was here last, and we were running all over town trying to get through our ambitious to-do list, and I was on the verge of exhaustion and Mom was still ready to go.  I think I nearly stripped the gears in my brain when I realized I had to shift my habit of thinking of getting Mom in shape to this:  She is 70 years old and has a knee injury and is running circles around me!

I know some of my best qualities have come from her:  resourceful, determined with a never-say-never attitude that has brought me success in almost everything I've done.  Like her, I moved up in nearly every job I ever held. When times changed, and it became harder to have the success you could once in business without a degree, I went back to school and graduated a month before my 40th birthday.  I hoped I was an example to my boys as she was to me, doing homework alongside them at the dining room table at night, sharing my enthusiasm for learning.  Mom is a lifelong learner, and amazes me at her knowledge of botany, history, politics, technology, and art.  She is always willing to try new things, and is more adept at using the computer and internet than many students I've taught.  It's been most exciting to me to see her develop her gift as an artist.

When I was little, I used to save the scraps of paper she'd doodle on while she talked on the phone.  One year I impulsively bought her a set of pastels and art paper for a birthday gift, not knowing what else to get her, and wondering what she'd do with it.  Within days, the most beautiful pictures of cats --a long-haired domestic car, and a lion--came into focus under the blur of her moving hands.  I could watch her all night.  It wasn't until she retired and moved to San Diego that she devoted the time and energy to her talent.  Her specialty is my favorite medium:  watercolor.

I thought I knew everything there was to know about my Mom, but she surprises me still.  I've learned that what I know of her is only one facet in a very complicated, shining gem.

    I love you, Mom.

    Happy Mother's Day.

  • We weren't looking for a new home for Josie, even though Todd kept wondering if keeping her was the right thing for our family.  He was talking to his friend Andrew at work (they go jogging or workout at lunch several times a week) about his doubts, and Andrew got very excited.  He said his daughter has been wanting her own dog (they have an older small dog) and from everything Todd said, Josie sounded like the dog they had been looking for. The daughter is 9-years old, and an only child.  Andrew's wife is a stay-at-home Mom, so Josie would get more attention during the day, too.

The first time Todd told Andrew we were fostering Josie, Andrew suggested that they take her, but it wasn't until Andrew started pressing Todd that he finally asked me about the idea. I felt it was really up to Zane, and he said while he enjoyed having Josie, he said he didn't at all mind seeing if it was a better fit for the other family.  We all agreed to give it a try.

Andrew's daughter, Fina (short for Josefina!), has been told she is "dogsitting," and so far so good.  Todd took her to their house on Tuesday and spent an hour with them, inspecting the yard (both he and Josie!) and fixing some things that were not right for Josie, and making sure the dogs would get along.  The mother walked Josie and Lucy, their other dog,  to school to pick up Fina that afternoon, and Josie was the hit at school.  Fina adores Josie!  They were also impressed how smart Josie is--they have a doggie door and they have never been able to get Lucy to use it, no matter what they've tried--food, propping it open, she never got the hang of it.  Josie discovered it the first day and started using it on her own.  She really is a clever little dog.

The only concern they expressed so far is what will they do with her when they go on vacation.  We had the answer for that--we will dogsit!  And we've invited them to come to the cabin for a weekend this summer--they are going to bring Josie with them, of course!

  • I've experienced an exception

I'd go so far as to say I've experienced two exceptions today.

Todd called and asked me if I knew the model of the dishwasher at the cabin.  His Mom is shopping for a new dishwasher and liked ours.  I knew I'd recognize it if I saw it, so I looked online, and was surprised to find an image of our old dishwasher at home.  I was intrigued by the word "recall" in the text, and sure enough, our old dishwasher has been recalled!

General Electric Recalls Dishwashers Due to Fire Hazard

That was a surprise!  I'm rethinking our practice of never returning those registration cards.  We get a rebate on replacing it:  $150 for a regular model, and $300 for a deluxe model.  We wanted to replace it anyway, but now we have a good reason.  Fire hazard!

I did a little online shopping on Sunday, and bought two 32-inch flat panel TVs on sale for $500 each.  I was sent an email notice that they would be delivered today, so I worked at home in the morning to wait for them, in case they needed a signature--and I didn't want two TV's sitting on my front doorstep all day!  Finally, at 12:30, one arrived.  One?  The UPS guy assured me he only had one, but he was able to see there should have been two, and gave me the other tracking number.  I only had one.  Sure enough, later in the day, the web site showed "Your package has experienced an exception."

Someone forgot to put it on the truck!  That's an impressive tracking system, to have gotten to the bottom of that mistake.

  • Three for three!

I have ridden my bike three times in the last three workdays, although only one way so far.  On Friday, Mike picked me up.  He took me (and my bike) shopping.  First stop was to Gottschalks (the only non-boutique clothing store in town) for capris that fit (my butt anyway).  I spent an hour in my closet that morning, trying on clothes trying to figure out what to wear on my bike.  I hate the new style--lower rise waist.  The last thing I want when I ride my bike is for my crack to be showing; well, my granny underwear, to be honest.  It doesn't help that I swim in the waist anyway.  Since I lost four pounds in four days it shouldn't be too long before I can wear smaller clothes--probably still proportionally wrong, but I'll feel so good about my body I won't care!   I can tell, it's a matter of weeks.  Then we went to Nugget for seafood and chicken to grill for salads.  Cale passed on the seafood and gave his two prawns and scallops away.  He still can't shake the feeling that it was the seafood that made him sick last week.  He lost 15 pounds and very upset about it.

On Monday, I rode into work again and had Cale pick me up, leaving my bike in my office.  We picked up Mexican food and brought it home.  Cale took me to work Tuesday morning on his way to Oregon.  He packed my truck (and trailer) with things I had promised to deliver to my sister, Dee, and will be bringing back my new bed.  I rode home after work, around 6:10, got home at 6:40, just in time to get in Cale's car and take Zane to trumpet.  He realized when we arrived that he brought his backpack, not his trumpet, but fortunately, the teacher has a spare trumpet for just this reason.  I went off to the adult school to fill in my timecards for last quarter--I never got paid and finally learned why--I never filled out the timesheets!  I headed to the pet store for bird seed and treats, and walked across the shopping center in perfect timing to meet Todd, who had picked up Zane, at the Mexican restaurant. Seis de Mayo!  Afterward, we made one more stop in the shopping center per Zane's request:  Game Stop.   It seems Zane needs some games that don't have an M for Mature rating, since last weekend we took all his M games away until he demonstrates more maturity and respect toward us.  We ended up selecting an arcade game package that we can all play, and two wireless guitars so we can play RockBand.  The family that plays together...doesn't kill each other!

Tomorrow I plan to ride both to work and home, although I will be going in late, waiting at home for a delivery.  I need to be at work by 11 so I hope it comes first thing.  It's been taking me 35 minutes to ride to work, but tonight it only took 30 min to get home.  It's always quicker to get home!  It should take about 20.  My legs are so sore.  I took a tylenol PM and I hope it kicks in soon.

My dentist called me today to chastise me for not making that appointment to get my tooth extracted.  She warned me that antibiotics might not help the next flare up.  I made an appointment for Friday the 13th of June.  I can hardly wait.

This is turning out to be a busy week.  We need to schedule our interview with the coordinator of a foreign exchange program.  Zane signed us up and it sounds interesting.  A French child, Zane's age, will come in July and stay with us for three weeks.  There will be field trips once/twice a week, that Zane can attend as well.  Perfect, since he's at that age too old for summer camps any more, but too young to work, and too [the wrong age] to stay home unsupervised for an entire summer!  I have a church meeting Thursday, and I need to start booking tickets for my summer trips:  Illinois, NC, and Portland.  We've reserved a week and a half at the cabin for our own vacation, and Todd is reading to me all the summer activities offered in our new association.  He signed us up for a tennis tournament Memorial Day weekend.  I feel like summer has already started.  It's going to be a fun one!!!
