  • John 15:5,8

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”

    Let's break this down:

"I am the vine, you are the branches" Jesus is the central agent. We need Him for our life.

"If a man remains in me" True Christians

"and I in him" The emphasis lies here. Jesus is the central agent. The most important part of our salvation is Jesus. He lives in us and gives us life.

"he will bear much fruit" Because his life is in Jesus.

"apart from me you can do nothing" This seems to remove any human element from our salvation. We can do nothing without Jesus. Nothing of any worth. Nothing that glorifies God.

"This is to my Father's glory" The Father is pleased with His Son. He is pleased that His glory is seen in the Christian's life because it is His Son who produces the fruit, to the Father's glory.

"that you bear much fruit" Not us, but Jesus in us. We see this from the context: "apart from me you can do nothing."

"showing yourselves to be my disciples" Because of Jesus' life in us and works through us, we are truly children of God.

This is the Gospel! What beautiful truth!

  • Logan Valley

Memorial Day, the beginning of camp season at Logan Valley Christian Retreat in Ellington, MO. I left Fenton after eating lunch with my family. There were hugs, tears, encouraging words, more hugs, and more tears. I had a little trouble getting there but finally arrived in time for supper. You would think getting there wouldn't be a big deal considering how many times I've been there with my church, but, alas, trouble there was. Somehow, I recognized nothing except the Dairy Queen in Farmington and the Logan Valley camp sign at the bottom of the big hill, officially known as W.

On a side note: Sue Williams, Logan Dave's wife, rides her bike up the big hill most every day, turns around at K, and flies back down. And by "flies" I mean goes really, really fast.

Rather than bore you with a day-by-day analysis of my time on staff at Logan Valley, I'll summarize and hit the high points, focusing mainly on how God worked in my life to give me sharper clarity in my walk with Him and in the ministry to which He is leading me.

Here is a list of my primary responsibilities:
    • Serve food
    • Clean up the dining hall after its destruction
    • Mow
    • Clean the waterslide
    I also did these things:
    • Make trash runs into town
    • Burn trash
    • Work the ropes courses (put on harnesses, stop people with a noodle, get them down from zip line, etc.)
    • Weed eat (a task I grew to hate)
How great it was to do all these things in order to keep the camp running, but the thing I enjoyed the most was interacting with the kids and my fellow staff members. I grew to value Christian fellowship even more and understand how important it is to set an example to believers and unbelievers alike by working out your faith. My prayer is that the ones who came to Logan Valley this past summer were affected in some way by the teaching, singing and prayers they heard in their sessions and also by the outpouring of Christian love administered by us, the Logan Valley staff.

Well, this has turned into Part One in what I expect to be a 100 part series. Here's your responsibility, dear reader: What, specifically, would you like to hear about Logan Valley? My next post relies on you!
