This is just k-...

WATCH YOUR MOUTH! *flying leap to clamp mouth shut*

Proverbs 18:21  ¶"Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof."

In that last few months, I've been impressed upon to really keep a watch on my mouth. Those words above are so incredibly true. About a year ago my sister was driving a beater car and visiting a friend. As they were driving her friend said, "Your muffler's just gonna fall out!" My sister had never had a problem with her muffler except that it was older and as she was pulling out of her friends driveway, the muffler fell off the car completely! On another note, my aunt always referred to herself in the context of Bad Luck and unfortunately that had been the path her life had followed.

Psalms 34:13  "Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile."

When you speak death over yourself "This is killing me" "I'm sick and tired of.." "I hate.." "that'll be the death of me" you'd better be sure you want the result you're speaking. There is a reason that we're told to keep our tongue from evil and that is that we can have what we speak.

Proverbs 15:4  ¶"A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit."

Defining a few key terms, will help make that verse have a little more weight. (what’s bold and underlined is the pertinent info)

Breach as defined by dictionary.com breach n.

    1. An opening, a tear, or a rupture.
    2. A gap or rift, especially in or as if in a solid structure such as a dike or fortification.
  1. A violation or infraction, as of a law, a legal obligation, or a promise.
  2. A breaking up or disruption of friendly relations; an estrangement.
  3. A leap of a whale from the water.
  4. The breaking of waves or surf.

tree of life

stood also in the midst of the garden of Eden (Gen. 2:9; 3:22). Some writers
have advanced the opinion that this tree had some secret virtue, which was
fitted to preserve life. Probably the lesson conveyed was that life was to be
sought by man, not in himself or in his own power, but from without, from Him
who is emphatically the Life (John 1:4; 14:6). Wisdom is compared to the tree
of life (Prov. 3:18).
The "tree of life" spoken of in the Book of Revelation
(Rev. 2:7; 22:2, 14) is an emblem of the joys of the celestial paradise.

What you say matters eternally. Remembering, that, what's in your heart and what you hear most is gonna come out.

Matthew 12:34  "O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh."

Matthew 12:36  "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment."

Never forget that as horrid an effect your words can have, they can also have great benefit.

Mark 11:23  "For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith."

Finally, I leave you with this:

1 Corinthians 1:3  "Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ."

Jesus loves you and so do I!

...ok, I will give you the benefit of doubt and listen for a while. Could you tell me how you found my site?

Could you clarify what you are saying? Are you saying that what we are in the habit of saying will happen to us? And what Bible translation do you use? You emphasized the effect your words have on yourself. Would you agree that words have a great effect (positive or negative) on people around you as well? Are you saying that the muffler fell off the car because that person said it would, or was he/she warning your sister because they had seen that the muffler was loose?

Good questions! I'm saying what we say has a supernatural effect on what happens in our lives.  I would agree that your words have an effect on the people around you. As the Bible says, you will account for the idle words you say. My sisters friend hadn't seen the muffler was loose. She merely spoke it because she had a habit of being pessimistic.

(I used KJV translation.)

I'm not sure that I agree with you. I'm pretty sure I don't, but give me a little time to think. Could you give me verses to back up what you are saying? Yes, I realize that you gave some in your post, but they didn't say anything about our words having a "supernatural effect" on our lives. The verses you gave said that you should be careful what you say, and I definitely agree that we should. Yes, our words affect us, and they guide our actions a lot of the time, but...supernatural effect?

John 6:63  "It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life."
1 Corinthians 2:13  "Which things also we speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual things."
2 Corinthians 4:13  "But having the same spirit of faith, according to that which is written, “I believed, and therefore I spoke.” We also believe, and therefore also we speak;"
1 John 4:5-6 "5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak of the world, and the world hears them. 6 We are of God. He who knows God listens to us. He who is not of God doesn't listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error."
Jude 1:9 "But Michael, the archangel, when contending with the devil and arguing about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him an abusive condemnation, but said, “May the Lord rebuke you!” 10 But these speak evil of whatever things they don't know. What they understand naturally, like the creatures without reason, in these things are they destroyed."

I can find you lots more if you'd like! Also, don't forget the one about moving the mountain with your faith. You can't do that without spiritual help!

To Sammyanthagirl: All is as it seems.

1. Words do not produce any supernatural effect in and of themselves.
We are not magicians uttering incantations. If I say a lamp will fall it is not more likely to fall than before.

2. God can grant prayers.
In which case as a result of us asking for something some supernatural thing can happen. /But it is not our words that are making it happen./ It is God who is doing it. We cannot pretend to control God by saying certain words.

3. Words have a huge effect on people.
Words have a great effect, not only on those who say them, but on those who hear them as well. If you tell a little kid he is really fast he will try his hardest to run faster. If you tell a little girl she is really nice to her sister she will be nicer than ever, just to live up to what you said. We can speak death or life to others. We can build up or tear down with our words. But that is not a "supernatural effect."

*laughs* I’m sorry, I didn’t even think of doing that. A lot of this was based of common sense, but here are a few stories to back up what I’m saying.

1. 1 Kings 18:20-38--The prophets of Baal said lots of words. But nothing happened.

Acts 14:8-18--Paul refused to take the credit for what he claimed was God working through him.

Acts 8:14-25--Similar, but dealing with hands. Peter and Simon's laying of hands on the people was not what was giving them the Holy Spirit.

2. Luke 1:5-13--Zachariah's prayer was heard, and answered, regardless of the fact that Elizabeth was barren and that they were both too old to have a child.

Acts 10:30-33--A gentile's prayer heard and answered.

1 Samuel 1:9-20--Another barren lady given a child.

3. This was not a scriptural truth, but an every-day truth. (mer, I don't know what those are called) If you seriously have never experienced this or something I can give you some examples. But I don't know if I will be able to find any verses that say it. Just like there are no verses that say that dogs stink if you don't wash them. It is still true....Maybe you could look at Proverbs. Why would Solomon bother to tell his son "listen to me" over and over again if words had no effect on people?

Could you tell me which part of this you don’t agree with? I find it funny that I’m trying to support the statement “God answers prayer” if you agree with in the first place.

Sorry it took so long for me to comment back. Busy weekend and all. Ok, I agree that we are not "magicians" but our words do have a supernatural effect.

I'll talk about the points you made and then I'll make some of my own.

1. Proverbs 18:21  ¶"Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof."

I don't understand why that isn't proof enough for your first point? Death and life and in the power of the TONGUE. Not the power of suggestion or anything else. The tongue. What you say has a life or death effect.

2. We don't control God by saying words. 100% no. But! He does grant prayers and you do have to actually speak words (I'll come back to this in my own refutation later)

3. First, we're not talking about running or being nice. We're talking about life and death. You can build up or tear down and you do have a supernatural effect.

Here's what I have to support that. I'm going to go back to basics so that my point is a little easier to understand.

Salvation. Salvation is supernatural right? Well Romans 10:9 says:  "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."

In order to be saved you have to confess with your mouth. Supernatural effect that your words have.

You said in your post that the Holy Ghost (another example was God) works through us. They can't do that if we don't speak. Just because They're working through us doesn't mean the words we speak have an less of a supernatural effect. Even more so if and when They do.

A great verse that shows how we have a supernatural effect with our words is Matthew 18:18 "Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

Do you cast out demons or believe in casting out demons? This is your support verse. You bind them and cast them out and they are bound on earth and in heaven.

Your words do that. I'm not saying that God doesn't answer prayer or we are "magicians" I'm saying our words have an effect. Why else do we pray? If you pray with someone, you have faith that those words will be answered one way or another. God is a good God. He answers and that is a supernatural effect that your words have. That's why we don't tear people down with our words. They will have an effect on their lives and they'll make that person happy or sad. Lighten their spirit or make it heavy.

The last story I'll leave you with for this post is the story of Daniel. In Daniel 10 an angel comes to him and says (Daniel 10:12 Bible in basic english)  "Then he said to me, Have no fear, Daniel; for from the first day when you gave your heart to getting wisdom and making yourself poor in spirit before your God, your words have come to his ears: and I have come because of your words."

We then find out that he had been battling the Prince of Persia and when he came the two spoke and Daniel said he had no strength left. (Daniel 10:13-18 paraphrased) In verse 19 the angel speaks to Daniel about his strength. "And he said to me, O man greatly loved, have no fear: peace be with you, be strong and let your heart be lifted up. And at his words I became strong, and said, Let my lord say on, for you have given me strength."

It says the same in KJV only, this is a little easier to understand. Anyway, I hope that answers all your questions.

Jesus loves you and so do I!

This is rather long…I’m sorry.

1. Agreed. We build up and tear down with our words. But I don't call that supernatural. Could you define "supernatural" for me? I have a feeling we are working under two different definitions. Oh, and the verse you gave backs up my third point. Thank you. *grin*

2. We don't control God by words. We don't control Him by silence either. He can answer unspoken prayers just as easily as He answers spoken ones. Matt 5:7. He knows what we need before we speak it. He is not dependant on us to ask for something so that He can give it. But, and CSLewis puts it in the Magician’s Nephew: "I've a sort of feeling He likes to be asked." But that doesn't mean He can't do something He hasn't been verbally asked to do. Or that He can't do something He hasn't been asked to do at all.

3. Again, can you define supernatural for me?

Salvation. Are you saying that we save ourselves by saying certain words? Certainly not! God saves people, not we ourselves, not of works lest any man should boast. Nor of words either. We cannot claim the credit for something God has done. Even if He did do it at our request.

Holy Spirit working through us. I'm sorry, maybe you can claim the credit for something God is doing through you. I can't. Also, God can work though our actions as well as our words. Many missionaries have spread God's love before they knew the language of the people they were working with. God's power is not confined to words.

Casting out demons. Yes, I believe in it. And again, this is God doing something. We do not, as humans, have power over demons. We are merely vessels through which God is working. And I cannot take the credit for something God does. Even if it is done through me. Yes, I say words, but it is God's power that casts out the demon. The disciples tried casting out demons and it didn't work at first. They were saying the right words, but the power was missing. That power does not come from human effort.

Praying with someone. You do not give them peace. God gives them peace. Again, do not take credit for something God is doing.

Daniel, your first story of him. So God answers prayer. Thank you for giving us another example. But do not tell me you believe that Daniel caused the angle to rise up from the ground by his great power. No! God sent the angel. Why then do you give the credit to Daniel?

Daniel, your second story of him. Um...this was an angle speaking and Daniel getting strength. I do not believe that an angle classifies as a human. But, regardless of what it was that was speaking, the power still came from God. Don't give the credit where it doesn't belong.

Alright, after reading this over a few times, I'm fairly convinced we are having a misunderstanding, and would like to state my opinion, and see how close I am to figuring out what you both are saying.

After reading this I was seeing that Jammer was saying that "Words have consequences, both physical and spiritual.", and Brisa was reading it and thinking something like "Words do not make God do something, this so-called supernatural effect cannot be possible."

My personal belief on the matter will remain separate from this debate, although it seems that Jammer is fighting for that "Words have consequences" and Brisa is fighting against "Words control God".

This is what I preceived after reading this 2 times in a row, and a few times before that.

Close, M. I'm saying that "words do not have a supernatural effect in and of themselves." The fact that we cannot control God isn’t my main point, though it is very important. And I'm fairly convinced we are having a misunderstanding. That is why I asked J to define supernatural.
